The Alabama auto sales tax is 2% of the vehicle’s purchase price at the state level, but county and city taxes almost always push the total higher, so most buyers end up paying somewhere between 3% and 6% once local rates are added.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Automotive Sales, Use, and Lease Tax Guide The exact amount depends on where you register the vehicle, whether you buy from a dealer or a private seller, and whether you have a trade-in.
What You Actually Pay
The 2% state rate applies to new and used vehicles alike.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Automotive Sales, Use, and Lease Tax Guide That’s the floor. On top of it, counties and cities levy their own sales or use taxes at rates that vary widely across the state.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Rates
On a $30,000 vehicle, the swing between a low-rate county and a high-rate city can easily be $900 or more. Before you commit to a purchase, check your combined rate using the Alabama Department of Revenue’s searchable rate table or by calling your county licensing official.
How the Taxable Amount Is Calculated
Dealer Purchase With a Trade-In
Buy from a licensed dealer and trade in a vehicle, and Alabama taxes only the net difference between what you’re buying and what you’re trading.3Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-103 – Sales Tax Levied on Sale Price Less Credit for Trade-In A $35,000 truck with a $12,000 trade-in credit is taxed on $23,000. The credit works the same way on new and used purchases.
If your trade-in is worth more than the vehicle you’re buying, the tax on that transaction is zero, but the leftover value doesn’t carry forward and isn’t refundable.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Automotive Sales, Use, and Lease Tax Guide
Private-Party Sale
No trade-in credit exists when you buy from an individual. Tax is calculated on the full purchase price you and the seller agreed on. If that price looks unreasonably low next to the vehicle’s actual worth, the county can assess tax based on fair market value instead. County licensing officials have access to valuation data from the Department of Revenue and use it to flag suspicious figures.
Leased Vehicles
Leasing is a separate tax entirely. Instead of the 2% sales tax, Alabama charges a 1.5% state rental tax on your monthly lease payments, and local rental taxes may apply on top.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Automotive Sales, Use, and Lease Tax Guide The leasing company collects it with each payment. You pay incrementally rather than in a lump sum.
Who Collects the Tax
When you buy from an Alabama dealer, the dealer collects all state, county, and city taxes at the point of sale and handles the initial title and registration paperwork.4Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-104 – Collection of Taxes Before Registration or Licensing Your bill of sale should itemize the rate and amount for each jurisdiction. Nothing further is required at the county office until your next tag renewal.
Buy from a private seller and it’s on you. Take the bill of sale to your county licensing official (most people call it the Tag Office) to register the vehicle, transfer the title, and pay the use tax.5Alabama Administrative Code. Buying a Vehicle Outside Alabama
If you purchase a vehicle in another state and bring it home, Alabama use tax still applies. Alabama credits legitimate sales tax paid to another state against the Alabama tax due.5Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code Rule 810-6-5-.11.05 – Casual Sales Tax and Use Tax on Automotive Vehicles Paid 2% elsewhere on a purchase that would trigger 4% in Alabama? You owe the 2% difference. Paid more than Alabama would have charged? You owe nothing, but you don’t get the overage back.
Georgia is the exception. Alabama does not have a reciprocal agreement with Georgia for auto sales tax, so tax you paid at a Georgia dealer may not count as a credit here.7Shelby County, AL – Official Website. Sales Tax Information (Non-Alabama Dealers) Buyers near the Georgia line get caught by this regularly. Confirm the credit situation with your county licensing official before closing on any out-of-state purchase.
Local taxes add another layer. Even where the state grants a credit for out-of-state tax, most Alabama counties and cities do not honor out-of-state local tax payments. Expect to pay Alabama local taxes in full at registration.
Exemptions That Do and Don’t Exist
Alabama’s exemptions from vehicle sales tax are narrower than most buyers assume.
- Nonprofits, churches, and civic organizations generally are not exempt. Alabama law requires most charitable and religious organizations to pay sales or use tax on vehicles like any other buyer.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Statutorily Tax Exempt Entities
- Disabled veterans who receive a VA grant for a specially adapted vehicle can qualify for a sales tax waiver, but only on a vehicle modified through the VA adaptive automobile program.
- Gifts between family members are not automatically exempt. If a vehicle is transferred without payment, the county may still assess use tax based on fair market value. Ask your Tag Office before assuming otherwise.
What Happens If You’re Late
Missing the 20-day registration window triggers an automatic $15 late registration penalty at the county.6Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 32 – Motor Vehicles and Traffic Section 32-6-65 The bigger problem is the tax itself. Unpaid auto sales or use tax carries a 10% penalty on the delinquent amount, and if you still haven’t paid within 30 days of a notice from the Department of Revenue, a second 10% penalty stacks on top.9Alabama Administrative Code.
