Alabama Board of Podiatry: Licensing, Exams, and Renewal

To practice in the state, you need a license from the Alabama State Board of Podiatry. The Alabama podiatry license requirements cover age, citizenship, education, and postgraduate training, plus passage of both the national American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE) and a separate state exam. Application fees start at $100, and licenses must be renewed every year with continuing education.

Who Qualifies to Apply

The board screens every applicant against the same baseline. You must be at least 21 years old under the board’s administrative rules, even though the underlying statute sets the floor at 19.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-255 – Examinations – Requirements; Issuance of License; Fees2Alabama Administrative Code. Chapter 730-X-3 – Certificate of Qualification You must be a U.S. citizen or, if not, legally present with appropriate federal documentation. The board also requires evidence of good moral character.

On the education side, you need a diploma from a podiatric medical college accredited by the American Podiatric Medical Association, together with official transcripts. After graduation, you must complete a podiatric residency or preceptorship program approved by either the APMA or the board itself.2Alabama Administrative Code. If you want to surgically treat bone-related conditions of the ankle, plan on more training. That work requires at least 36 months of postgraduate residency training approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the APMA.3Alabama Legislature. Sunset Report – State Board of Podiatry

The Two Exams You Must Pass

Alabama layers a state exam on top of the national one. You need both.

APMLE (National Exam)

State law requires you to pass every part of the examination administered by the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners before you can sit for the Alabama exam.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-255 – Examinations – Requirements; Issuance of License; Fees That exam is the APMLE, delivered in three parts: Part I covers basic sciences, Part II covers clinical knowledge, and Part III tests whether you can safely practice unsupervised.4APMLE. What Is on the Exam All three must be passed before the board will treat your application as complete.

Alabama State Exam

The board’s own examination tests practical, theoretical, and physiological podiatry, along with foot anatomy and pathology as it applies to podiatric medicine.5Legal Information Institute. Alabama Administrative Code r. 730-X-3-.01 – Application for License to Practice Podiatry: Certification by Examination A separate component covers the Alabama Podiatry Practice Act and the board’s rules. Alabama’s scope and prescribing limits differ from other states, and the board wants confirmation you know them.

The state exam is offered twice a year, in June and December. If you fail, you can retake it at the next sitting, but the reexamination fee is nonrefundable.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-255 – Examinations – Requirements; Issuance of License; Fees

Fees

The board’s fee schedule, set by administrative rule, is:6Alabama Administrative Code. Rule 730-X-3-.10 – Fees

  • Application fee: $100
  • State examination or reexamination fee: $100
  • Annual license renewal fee: $500

The board has statutory authority to adjust these amounts, so confirm the current numbers with the board before you file.

Reciprocity for Out-of-State Podiatrists

If you already hold a license in another state, you may be able to skip the full examination process. Reciprocity is only available if your home state extends the same courtesy to Alabama-licensed podiatrists; if it doesn’t, this route is closed.2Alabama Administrative Code. Chapter 730-X-3 – Certificate of Qualification

Reciprocity applicants still meet the same age, education, and residency standards as examination candidates. You’ll need a certified statement from your current state board confirming that you are licensed, have been examined, and are in good standing. Three written character references are required: one from a podiatrist licensed in Alabama, one from another podiatrist, and one from either a podiatrist or a non-podiatrist.

One condition catches people out. If your reciprocity application is approved, you must relocate to Alabama and begin full-time podiatric practice within 12 months of receiving the license, unless the board grants an extension. The board may also call you in for a personal interview if anything in the file raises questions.

Annual Renewal and Continuing Education

Alabama podiatry licenses renew every year, not every two. The deadline is October 1, with a grace period through October 31. Miss that window and a $300 late penalty is added on top of the $500 renewal fee, and continuing to practice on an unrenewed license can trigger statutory penalties for practicing without authorization.7Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-275 – Renewal; Continuing Education

Renewal requires at least 12 hours of continuing education through a program approved by the APMA or the State Board of Podiatry. Hours earned at the annual state meeting of the Alabama Podiatry Association count. Proof of completion must be submitted with your renewal application; failing to provide that proof by November 1 also triggers the $300 penalty.8Alabama Administrative Code. Rule 730-X-3-.06 – Renewal of License to Practice Podiatry

If you have been inactive for two or more years, the board may renew your license at its discretion, but expect additional scrutiny of your qualifications first.

What the License Lets You Do

Alabama defines podiatry as the diagnosis and treatment of ailments of the human foot and ankle. A licensed podiatrist can provide medical, surgical, and mechanical treatments in that area, including amputation of toes and other parts of the foot below the Chopart joint. Alabama podiatrists cannot perform total ankle replacements, cannot administer anything other than local anesthesia, and can only prescribe drugs that fall within their authorized scope.9Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-230 – Definitions

Conduct That Can Cost You the License

The board has exclusive authority to suspend, revoke, or limit a license, and it can issue reprimands or administrative fines up to $2,000 per violation.10Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 34-24-252 – Powers and Duties Grounds for discipline include fraud in obtaining a license, any felony conviction (not just practice-related), gross negligence or malpractice, habitual intemperance or addiction to habit-forming drugs, mental or physical incompetence, unethical conduct that could endanger patients or the public, and violations of the Practice Act or board rules.

The same conduct that can lead to revocation can also be grounds to deny an initial or reciprocity application, so prior discipline in another state is likely to surface during the Alabama process.

DEA Registration if You Plan to Prescribe Controlled Substances

Alabama podiatrists can prescribe within their scope of practice, but controlled substances need a separate federal registration. The DEA will only issue a registration to someone who already holds a valid state license authorizing them to dispense controlled substances, so your Alabama license comes first.11Drug Enforcement Administration. Registration Q&A Each practice location where you dispense controlled substances needs its own registration, and both new applicants and those renewing must satisfy training requirements under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.
