In Alabama, the cost to tax and tag your car comes down to four charges, and you can estimate them yourself without a dedicated Alabama car tax and tag calculator. Every year you owe an ad valorem property tax based on your vehicle’s value plus a $13 base registration fee for a standard passenger car. When you first buy the vehicle, you also pay a one-time 2% state sales tax (plus local sales tax) and a $15 title fee. The ad valorem portion is where the math gets personal, because it depends on your county’s millage rate and how your vehicle is classified.
The Four Charges on an Alabama Vehicle
Two charges recur every year: the ad valorem (property) tax and the registration fee. Two are one-time costs at purchase: sales tax and the title fee. Local add-ons such as municipal sales tax, specialty plate surcharges, and small county processing fees stack on top. Everything else on this page is a variation of those four items.
How to Calculate the Ad Valorem Tax
The ad valorem tax is the biggest variable and usually the largest line on your bill. It uses three inputs: your vehicle’s market value, its assessment class, and your local millage rate.
Step 1: Find the Market Value
Alabama does not use Kelley Blue Book or NADA for tax purposes, so the state’s figure may differ from what you see on consumer sites. Vehicles are revalued every year as of October 1, and new values apply to registrations starting the following January. Because of that annual revaluation, your tax bill drops a bit each year as the car depreciates.
Step 2: Apply the Assessment Rate for Your Class
Alabama taxes only a percentage of market value, and the percentage depends on how the vehicle is used.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-8-1 – Classification of Property; Assessment Rate
- Class IV, 15%: private passenger automobiles, SUVs (any weight), station wagons, vans, and pickups 8,000 pounds or less owned and operated by an individual for personal use.
- Class II, 20%: motorcycles, commercial vehicles, leased vehicles without a lease-purchase option, trucks over 8,000 pounds, and any vehicle used for business.
Getting the class right matters. A pickup used exclusively for a landscaping business is Class II at 20%, even if it weighs under 8,000 pounds.
Step 3: Multiply by Your County’s Millage Rate
A millage rate is tax owed per dollar of assessed value, and it varies across Alabama’s 67 counties and from one municipality or school district to the next. The 15% or 20% assessment rate is fixed by state statute, but the millage is entirely local. That’s why two identical cars in different counties produce different bills. Call your county tax assessor or license office for the exact combined rate at your address.
A Worked Example
Take a personal-use SUV with a market value of $30,000 in a county with a combined millage rate of 45 mills (0.045):
- $30,000 × 0.15 (Class IV) = $4,500 assessed value
- $4,500 × 0.045 = $202.50 in annual ad valorem tax
Swap in your own numbers and the formula holds.
Registration and Tag Fees
The base annual registration fee for a standard private passenger automobile is $13.2Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-12-242 – License Taxes and Registration Fees – Private Passenger Automobiles; Motorcycles; Electric Vehicles Your county license office may add a small processing fee. A specialty or personalized plate adds an annual surcharge every year, not just the first time you order it.
Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Surcharges
Alabama adds annual fees on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to offset lost fuel tax revenue. As of July 1, 2023, those fees are $203 per year for a fully electric vehicle and $103 per year for a plug-in hybrid, with the next scheduled $3 increase on July 1, 2027.3Alabama Department of Revenue. MEMO 2023-002 Registration Fee Increase – Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles They’re collected with your normal registration renewal.
Trucks Over 8,000 Pounds
Trucks and truck tractors over 8,000 pounds gross weight pay a weight-based fee instead of the flat $13 rate.4Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-12-248 – License Taxes and Registration Fees – Trucks or Truck Tractors – Generally A few representative tiers:
- 8,001–10,000 lbs: $35
- 18,001–26,000 lbs: $235
- 55,001–64,000 lbs: $650
- 80,001 lbs and over: $890
Pickups used personally or for farming are rated on the truck’s own gross weight only, and farm trucks get reduced rates capped at $30 up to 30,000 pounds and $250 at the heaviest tiers.
Sales Tax and Title Fee at Purchase
When you buy a vehicle in Alabama, the state charges a one-time 2% sales tax on the purchase price. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount: buy a $25,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in and the 2% state tax applies to $20,000, or $400.5Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-2 – Tax Levied on Gross Receipts Local governments add their own sales tax on top, and the combined rate in many areas falls between roughly 3% and 4.5%, though some jurisdictions run higher. You pay sales tax once at registration, not every year.
The title fee is $15 per application, plus a $1.50 commission for the agent or county official processing the paperwork.6Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-8-6 – Transaction Fees; Commissions The same $15 applies whether you’re titling a new purchase, transferring a title after a private sale, or recording a lien.7Alabama Department of Revenue. What Is the Cost to Make Application for Alabama Certificate of Title
If someone gives you a vehicle as a genuine gift with no lien on it, Alabama generally does not charge sales or use tax on the transfer; note “gift” on the bill of sale. If the gifted vehicle still has a loan balance, tax will be collected. You still owe the annual ad valorem tax either way.
A Full First-Year Estimate
Here’s what a first-time buyer might pay on a personal-use sedan with a $20,000 market value, purchased for $22,000 with no trade-in, in a county with a combined millage of 50 mills (0.050) and roughly 2% local sales tax:
- Ad valorem tax: $20,000 × 0.15 × 0.050 = $150
- Registration fee: $13
- State sales tax (2%): $440 (one-time)
- Local sales tax (≈2%): $440 (one-time)
- Title fee: $16.50
First-year total: around $1,060. In following years, only the ad valorem tax and the $13 registration fee recur, and the ad valorem amount shrinks as the car depreciates.
Deadlines and Late Penalties
Alabama staggers registration renewals January through November based on the first letter of your last name, and your tag expires on the last day of your assigned month.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Alabama Administrative Code 810-5-1-.211 – Motor Vehicle Registration Periods, Delinquency Dates If you buy a vehicle, you have 20 calendar days from the purchase date to register it with your county license official.
Missing either deadline costs a $15 flat penalty. The bigger cost is interest: delinquent ad valorem taxes accrue at 12% per year on top of what you owe.9Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-5-9 – Interest on Delinquent Taxes On a $300 annual tax, six months late adds roughly $18 in interest on top of the $15 flat penalty. Running a vehicle with the wrong class of plate (a commercial truck on a cheaper personal tag, for example) carries a separate 25% penalty on the difference between what you paid and what you should have paid.
Two Situations the Standard Formula Doesn’t Cover
New residents moving to Alabama have 30 days from the vehicle’s entry into the state to register it here.10Alabama Department of Revenue. I Just Moved to Alabama – How Long Do I Have Before I Must Register My Vehicle You’ll owe the ad valorem tax and registration fee prorated for the remainder of the registration year, but no state sales tax if you already paid sales tax on the vehicle in your previous state (bring proof).
Veterans with service-connected disabilities can get the registration fee waived on their first vehicle registered with a disabled veteran plate, but ad valorem tax still applies in most cases.11Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force The ad valorem exemption only applies when the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs paid for all or part of the vehicle.
