Any Alabama resident with a service-connected VA disability rating can get an Alabama disabled veteran tag, and there is no minimum rating required to qualify for the plate itself. What changes with your rating is the money: fee exemptions scale up as the rating goes up, and veterans whose vehicles were paid for in whole or part with VA funds get the broadest tax relief. One thing the plate does not do, despite what many people assume, is authorize you to park in accessible spaces.
Who Qualifies
The DV plate is available to any Alabama resident who is a service-connected disabled veteran. There is no minimum disability percentage to obtain the plate. Each military branch has its own plate design, all issued through the Alabama Department of Revenue.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
To prove eligibility, you need a VA disability rating certification plus one of the following: a military identification card, a DD Form 214, or an affidavit from Veterans Affairs.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Army
What the Tag Actually Saves You
The financial benefit depends on your rating and how you acquired the vehicle. The tiers are worth reading carefully because they are not intuitive.
Rating of 10% to 50%
Your first DV plate is exempt from registration fees and license plate issuance fees. You still owe ad valorem (property) taxes on the vehicle. Any additional DV plates for other vehicles require full registration and issuance fees.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
Rating of 51% or Higher
The first plate is exempt from registration and issuance fees, same as the lower tier, and ad valorem tax still applies. The difference is on additional vehicles: subsequent DV plates cost $5 per year instead of full fees. Veterans whose vehicles have special mechanical control devices fall into this tier regardless of rating percentage.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
Vehicle Paid for by the VA
If you own a vehicle purchased all or partly with VA funds, all DV plates on that vehicle are exempt from both registration fees and ad valorem taxes. This is the only category with the ad valorem exemption, and it comes from Alabama Code Section 40-12-254. You must own the automobile and keep it for private use only.3Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-12-254 – Motor Vehicles Issued to Disabled Veterans; Fees
One point that trips people up: you do not have to take the distinctive DV plate to claim the registration fee exemption or reduction. The exemptions attach to your disability status, not the plate design. If you prefer a standard plate, you can still get the fee break.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
Which Vehicles the Plate Fits
The DV plate can go on private passenger cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles. For veterans rated 10% to 50%, recreational vehicles must not exceed 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Veterans rated 51% or higher can display the plate on a recreational vehicle of any gross weight.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
For the full ad valorem exemption under Section 40-12-254, you must own the vehicle outright. The statute requires the sworn application to include the document evidencing the veteran’s ownership. A leased vehicle does not qualify.3Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-12-254 – Motor Vehicles Issued to Disabled Veterans; Fees
How to Apply
Applications go through your local county licensing office or probate judge’s office. Plan to appear in person unless you have authorized a representative with a notarized power of attorney. Bring:
- Your VA disability rating certification (a benefits summary letter showing your percentage and whether it is permanent and total).
- Proof of military service: DD Form 214, military ID, or a VA affidavit. If you no longer have your DD-214, you can request a replacement through the National Archives or the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs.4Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Distinctive License Plates
- A valid Alabama driver’s license or non-driver ID. Alabama offers a version with “VETERAN” printed on it for honorably discharged veterans who present a DD-214 at their local licensing exam office.5Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. AL Laws Affecting Veterans July 2022
- If you are claiming the ad valorem exemption for a VA-funded vehicle, the document showing the VA contributed to the purchase.
You will complete the Alabama Department of Revenue’s application form for military license plates. The office confirms eligibility and may cross-check disability records with the VA. Most applications are processed the same day. If your branch’s plate is in stock, you walk out with it. If not, you get a temporary tag while the permanent plate is ordered.
The Plate Does Not Grant Accessible Parking
This is the single most misunderstood part of the DV tag. Having a Disabled Veteran plate on your vehicle does not automatically let you park in accessible spaces. Since January 2022, Alabama has offered DV plates that display the International Symbol of Access (the wheelchair symbol). If your plate has that symbol, you can use accessible spaces. If it does not, you need a separate hanging placard.
To get the ISA symbol on your plate or a disability parking placard, you have to submit an Application for Disability Access Parking Credentials. That form requires a physician’s certification that you meet the state’s definition of a person with a disability for parking purposes, which is a separate determination from your VA rating.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force
Parking in an accessible space without the ISA symbol on the plate or a valid placard can bring a citation even if you have a legitimate DV plate. Ask about the ISA option when you apply.
Renewal
DV plates follow Alabama’s staggered registration system, which assigns renewal months from January through November based on the first letter of the vehicle owner’s last name. Registration expires the last day of your assigned month.6Alabama Department of Revenue. In What Months Are License Plates Renewed?
Standard registration fees for passenger cars and pickup trucks run from $23 to $105 annually, but you will owe less or nothing depending on your exemption tier.7Alabama Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Registration Fees Keep your VA certification current. If your disability rating changes, bring updated documentation at renewal, since the licensing office may ask for fresh verification.
If the Veteran Dies
A surviving spouse can keep the distinctive plate at no fee or tax for one private vehicle, for the rest of the spouse’s lifetime. The benefit ends on remarriage.8Justia. Alabama Code 32-6-254 – Use and Transferability; Permanence
The surviving spouse qualifies even if the veteran never obtained the plate or claimed the exemption during their lifetime. There is no requirement that the benefit was exercised before the veteran’s death.9Alabama Department of Revenue. Partial or Full Exemption from Privilege or License Tax and Registration Fee
