Alabama EBT Food Stamps: Eligibility, Amounts, and How to Apply

Alabama EBT food stamps — officially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) run by the Alabama Department of Human Resources — provide monthly grocery money loaded onto a debit-style card, with benefits ranging from $298 a month for one person up to $994 for a family of four, depending on your income and expenses.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility You apply online through MyDHR or at your county DHR office, complete a short interview (usually by phone), and get a decision within 30 days.2Alabama Department of Human Resources. Who Qualifies in Alabama

Eligibility turns on three things: how much your household earns, what you have in the bank, and (for some adults) whether you’re working.

Your gross monthly income — the total before any deductions — generally has to come in under 130 percent of the federal poverty level, and your net income (after allowable deductions) under 100 percent.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility For October 2025 through September 2026, the cutoffs by household size are:

  • 1 person: $1,696 gross / $1,305 net
  • 2 people: $2,292 gross / $1,763 net
  • 3 people: $2,888 gross / $2,221 net
  • 4 people: $3,483 gross / $2,680 net
  • 5 people: $4,079 gross / $3,138 net
  • 6 people: $4,675 gross / $3,596 net
  • 7 people: $5,271 gross / $4,055 net
  • 8 people: $5,867 gross / $4,513 net

Each additional person adds $596 to the gross limit and $459 to the net limit.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility

On the resource side, countable assets like cash and bank balances can’t exceed $2,750 for most households, or $4,500 if a household member is 60 or older or has a disability.3Alabama Department of Human Resources. Food Assistance Your home and the land under it don’t count.

Work Requirements for Adults Without Dependents

If you’re 18 to 54, physically able to work, and have no dependents, federal rules call you an able-bodied adult without dependents (ABAWD). You can get benefits for only three months in any three-year window unless you work, train, or combine the two for at least 80 hours a month. Volunteer hours count.4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements

This is the rule that trips up the most people. If you think a medical condition, local job scarcity, or participation in another program should exempt you, raise it with your caseworker during the interview rather than hoping the system catches it.

How Much You’ll Receive

The maximum monthly allotment goes to households with zero net income. For FY2026:1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility

  • 1 person: $298
  • 2 people: $546
  • 3 people: $785
  • 4 people: $994
  • 5 people: $1,183
  • 6 people: $1,421
  • 7 people: $1,571
  • 8 people: $1,789
  • Each additional person: +$218

Most households get less than the max. The basic formula: take the maximum for your household size, subtract 30 percent of your net income, and that’s your monthly benefit.

Net income is your gross income minus several deductions. Every household gets a standard deduction — $209 a month for one to three people, $223 for four, $261 for five, and $299 for six or more.5United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Maximum Allotments and Deductions You can also deduct 20 percent of earned wages, dependent care costs, legally owed child support, and shelter expenses that exceed half your income after the other deductions.

If your household includes someone 60 or older or with a disability, out-of-pocket medical expenses above $35 a month that aren’t covered by insurance can also come off, with no cap.6Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Medical Expenses Handbook Prescription costs, equipment, transportation to appointments, and insurance premiums all count. Even a modest medical deduction can meaningfully raise your benefit, so document these.

Documents to Gather Before You Apply

Missing paperwork is the single most common reason cases stall. Have these ready:

  • Photo ID and proof of Alabama residency (lease, utility bill, or mail with your address), plus Social Security numbers for everyone in the household seeking benefits.
  • Recent pay stubs for anyone working, or award letters for Social Security, disability, child support, or other unearned income.
  • Records of rent or mortgage, utilities, and dependent care — these feed the deductions that set your benefit.
  • If a household member is 60 or older or has a disability, receipts or statements for medical costs over $35 a month.6Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Medical Expenses Handbook
  • Bank statements and documentation of other countable assets.

How to Submit Your Application

Alabama accepts applications three ways. The quickest is online through the MyDHR portal at mydhr.alabama.gov, where you register an account and complete the application in your browser.7Alabama Department of Human Resources. MyDHR You can also download the paper application (Form 2116-1942) from the Alabama DHR website and fax, mail, or hand-deliver it to your county DHR office.3Alabama Department of Human Resources. After your application arrives, a caseworker schedules a mandatory interview, usually by phone, to verify household composition, income, and expenses. DHR must notify you of a decision within 30 days of the date your application was received.2Alabama Department of Human Resources. Food Assistance Division Frequently Asked Questions If approved, your benefits are calculated from the filing date, not the interview or approval date.

Emergency Benefits Within Seven Days

Households in a financial crisis can qualify for expedited processing, which puts benefits on your card within seven calendar days. Any one of the following qualifies you:8eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 Office Operations and Application Processing

  • Less than $150 in monthly gross income and less than $100 in liquid assets.
  • Combined monthly gross income and liquid assets below your monthly rent or mortgage plus utilities.
  • Migrant or seasonal farmworker household meeting the destitute criteria with less than $100 in liquid assets.

Tell the caseworker at the time of application if you think you qualify. Expedited cases still require an interview, just one scheduled quickly enough for benefits to post within seven days.

When Benefits Load Each Month

Alabama staggers SNAP deposits over 20 days based on the last two digits of your case number. Benefits load between the 4th and the 23rd, and your date doesn’t change from month to month.9Alabama Department of Human Resources. Alabama EBT Issuance Schedule

Using Your EBT Card

Your EBT card arrives by mail after approval. Activate it by calling the number on the card and setting a four-digit PIN. It works at any retailer displaying the Quest acceptance mark — most grocery stores, supermarkets, and farmers’ markets.

SNAP covers household food: bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and similar staples. You can also buy seeds and plants that produce food. Federal rules prohibit alcohol, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, medicines, and any food that’s hot at the point of sale.10Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy Energy drinks labeled with “Supplement Facts” rather than “Nutrition Facts” are treated as supplements and aren’t eligible.

Every SNAP receipt shows your remaining balance. You can also check it at connectebt.com or by calling the toll-free number on the back of your card.11Alabama Department of Human Resources. ConnectEBT Card Lock Instructions

Keeping Your Benefits

Approval isn’t permanent. Most households get a 12-month certification period, after which you have to recertify by submitting a new application and completing another interview. Miss that deadline and your case closes — you’ll have to reapply from scratch.12Alabama Department of Human Resources. Chapter 17 Simplified-Reporting Procedures for All Households

Most households also submit a six-month report updating income, expenses, and household composition. If the county office doesn’t have your six-month report by the 10th of the processing month, you’ll get a notice warning that benefits end if the completed form doesn’t arrive by month’s end. Miss that too and your case closes, though you can get benefits reinstated the following month if you submit the completed report with required documentation before that month ends.12Alabama Department of Human Resources. Chapter 17 Simplified-Reporting Procedures for All Households

Between those reports, let your county office know about major changes: a new job, a household member moving in or out, a significant income increase. Unreported changes can produce overpayment claims you’ll have to repay.

If You’re Denied or Your Benefits Are Cut

If DHR denies your application, reduces your benefits, or terminates your case, you can request a fair hearing — orally or in writing — within 90 days of the action.13Alabama Department of Human Resources. Chapter 15 Fair Hearings You can also challenge your current benefit level at any point during your certification period.

Timing matters. Request a hearing before the effective date on your adverse-action notice, and (if your certification period hasn’t expired) your benefits continue at the previous level while the hearing is pending. Wait past that date and the reduction or termination takes effect; you’d need to show good cause for the delay to get benefits restored to the prior level in the meantime.13Alabama Department of Human Resources. Chapter 15 Fair Hearings People who act within the notice window keep benefits flowing during the process. People who wait a few days past it don’t.
