To start public kindergarten in Alabama, a child must turn five on or before September 1 of the school year, or by the first day of school in the enrolling district if that date differs.1Alabama Legislature. The September 1 Cutoff
A child who turns five on September 2 waits until the following year. Districts have no discretion to admit a child early, and Alabama has no statewide policy for early admission of academically advanced children. Missing the cutoff by a day counts the same as missing it by months.
Private and church schools set their own age policies. If your child’s birthday falls just outside the public school line, a private program may still accept them.
Kindergarten Is Not Required
Alabama’s compulsory attendance law does not begin until age six. Children between six and seventeen must attend a public school, private school, church school, or receive instruction from a private tutor. Parents of six-year-olds can even opt out for one additional year by notifying their local board of education in writing that they will delay enrollment until age seven.2Alabama Legislature. So enrolling a five-year-old in kindergarten is a choice, not a legal obligation. Skipping it carries no penalty. Most educators recommend it as preparation for first grade, but the decision belongs to the family.
Documents You Need to Enroll
Districts vary in the extras they ask for, but the core paperwork is consistent statewide. Gather these before you go to the enrollment office:
- A certified birth certificate. If you don’t have one, a certified passport or baptismal record may be accepted; call your district’s enrollment office to confirm what substitutes they take.
- An Alabama Certificate of Immunization. Only certificates issued through Alabama’s immunization system are accepted, so out-of-state vaccination records must be transferred and a new certificate generated through your county health department.
- Two proofs of residency, such as utility bills, a lease, a mortgage statement, or property tax records. Some districts also want a valid Alabama driver’s license or state ID.
- Photo ID for the parent or guardian enrolling the child.
Schools may ask for your child’s Social Security number to use as a student ID, but federal law bars them from making it a condition of enrollment. Families experiencing homelessness and children in foster care have enrollment protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Schools must enroll these children immediately, even without the usual residency, birth, or immunization records, and help the family gather what’s missing. Ask for the district’s homeless liaison.
Vaccination Requirements
Children entering kindergarten in Alabama, in either public or private school, must have a valid Alabama Certificate of Immunization on file. The required vaccines are:
- DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis): five doses, or four if the fourth was given after the child’s fourth birthday.
- Polio: four doses, or three if the third was given after the child’s fourth birthday.
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): two doses of measles-containing vaccine and one each of mumps and rubella, typically given as two MMR shots.
- Varicella (chickenpox), required for kindergarten entry since 2001.

Religious Exemption
Alabama allows a religious exemption. To get one, a parent must file a written objection, review an educational video, and sign a Do Not Vaccinate form at the county health department. The department then issues a Certificate of Religious Exemption, which the school accepts in place of the standard immunization certificate. Partial exemptions for specific vaccines are available. Exceptions for Families Moving Into Alabama
Alabama holds firm on the September 1 rule for most children, but two narrow exceptions exist.
Out-of-State Transfers
A child who was legally enrolled in public kindergarten in another state may be admitted to an Alabama public kindergarten even if they don’t meet the September 1 cutoff. This is not automatic. It requires prior approval from the local board of education and depends on available space.1Alabama Legislature. Once the child finishes kindergarten under this exception, they move on to first grade regardless of age.
Military Families
Alabama participates in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Under the compact, a child of an active-duty service member must be allowed to continue at the grade level they held in the sending state, including kindergarten, regardless of Alabama’s age cutoff.6Alabama Legislature. This right does not depend on local board approval or on space, which makes it stronger than the general transfer provision.
A Word on False Enrollment Information
Submitting a written statement you know to be untrue to mislead a school official, most often by falsifying a home address to enroll in a different zone, is a Class C misdemeanor under Alabama’s unsworn falsification statute.7Alabama Legislature.
