To transfer a clinical social work license to Alabama, you apply for endorsement with the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (ABSWE) and pay a $75 fee. What Alabama Checks Before Issuing the LICSW
Education
You need a master’s or doctoral degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) at the time you graduated. Supervised Clinical Experience
Alabama requires at least 3,000 hours of post-master’s supervised clinical experience with a minimum of 96 hours of clinical supervision from a board-approved LICSW.3Alabama Administrative Code. Examination

Your current license must be active and in good standing. The board pulls verification from every state where you have ever held a social work license, so any past discipline, suspension, or revocation will surface.
Documents You Need to Gather
Several items have to come directly from third parties rather than from you, and that is where most applications get stuck. Request them early.
- Official transcripts sent directly from your CSWE-accredited program to the ABSWE. Transcripts you mail yourself in opened envelopes are not accepted.
- ASWB Clinical Examination score verification, requested from ASWB and sent to the Alabama board.
- License verification from every jurisdiction where you have ever been licensed as a social worker, confirming current status and any disciplinary history.

Fees
The reciprocity application fee is $75, and the board returns applications that arrive without payment. The fee is non-refundable regardless of outcome. Submitting the Application
The ABSWE takes applications online through its portal and by mail. Processing time depends on board volume, and the most common cause of delay is a missing document, not anything substantive about your qualifications. Check your status periodically and respond quickly if the board flags something incomplete.
One point matters if you are moving to Alabama for a job: the board does not appear to offer a temporary or provisional permit while your endorsement application is pending. You cannot practice social work in Alabama until the LICSW is issued. Build processing time into your relocation so there is no gap between your start date and your license.
Criminal History
The board can deny a license based on a felony conviction or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, whether or not the offense was connected to social work practice. Guilty pleas and no-contest pleas count the same as convictions. Is There a Faster Path Through the Compact?
Alabama introduced legislation in 2024 (SB 208) to join the Social Work Licensure Compact, a multi-state agreement that lets licensed social workers practice across member states without going through full endorsement in each one. The compact has reached activation status nationally after enactment in at least seven states. Before you start assembling an endorsement packet, check the ABSWE website and swcompact.org for Alabama’s current participation status.
