Alabama License Plate Options: Fees, Ad Valorem Tax, and Renewals

A standard Alabama license plate costs $23 in base registration fees for a passenger automobile, but the total you actually pay at the county licensing office will be higher once ad valorem property tax, a $1.25 state issuance fee, a local issuance fee, and any specialty or personalization surcharge are added. Motorcycles register for $15, pickup trucks range from $23 to $105 depending on gross weight, and personalized or specialty plates add roughly $50 per year on top of the base fee.1Alabama Department of Revenue. What You Pay Beyond the Base Fee

The registration fee is only one line on your receipt. Every plate also carries a $1.25 state issuance fee and a local issuance fee set by your county.2Alabama Department of Revenue. What Is the Fee to Transfer a License Plate On top of that, Alabama collects annual ad valorem (property) tax on the vehicle itself, which is often the largest single item at the counter. A personalized combination or a specialty design usually adds a $50 annual surcharge. Budget for all of these together rather than for the base fee alone.

Base Registration Fees by Vehicle Type

Alabama’s standard passenger plate carries the blue and white design with the state motto, and the base fee depends on the vehicle class:1Alabama Department of Revenue. License Plates Archive

  • Automobiles: $23
  • Motorcycles: $15
  • Pickup trucks: $23 to $105, depending on gross weight
  • Motor homes: $23 to $890, depending on size and weight class

Plate numbering follows a county-based structure, with the first digits identifying the county of registration.

Ad Valorem Tax: The Line That Surprises People

Alabama treats motor vehicles as personal property and taxes them each year the way it taxes real estate. The tax is calculated by multiplying the vehicle’s market value by an assessment ratio, then applying the combined state and local millage rate.

Assessment ratios depend on how the vehicle is classified:3Alabama Department of Revenue. Vehicle Valuation

  • Class IV — 15 percent of market value. Covers private passenger cars, SUVs regardless of weight, vans, and pickup trucks under 8,000 pounds gross weight used for personal purposes.
  • Class II — 20 percent of market value. Includes motorcycles, trucks over 8,000 pounds, leased vehicles not for private use, and vehicles used commercially.
  • Class I — 30 percent of market value. Public utility vehicles.

The state millage rate is 6.5 mills, roughly $6.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, and county and municipal millage rates stack on top of that.4Alabama Department of Revenue. Property (Ad Valorem) Tax A rough example: a personal vehicle with a $20,000 market value has an assessed value of $3,000 at 15 percent. At a combined millage rate of 50 mills, a plausible total in many Alabama counties, the annual ad valorem tax would be $150. Your figure depends entirely on your county’s rates and the Department of Revenue’s valuation.

Personalized Plate Costs

A personalized combination adds $50 per year to your standard registration fee.1Alabama Department of Revenue. License Plates Archive You choose the letter-and-number combination through the Plate Reservation and Ordering System (PROS) on the Department of Revenue’s website, and you can check availability before paying.5Alabama Department of Revenue. License Plate and Registration Information The maximum length is five to seven characters, depending on the plate category.6Alabama Administrative Code. Personalized License Plates Combinations are issued first-come, first-served.

The Department of Revenue rejects combinations containing profane, obscene, or misleading language, or anything that could be confused with law enforcement or government identifiers. A plate later deemed inappropriate can be revoked, and you would have to get a replacement.

You must renew annually to keep your combination. Let the renewal lapse and you forfeit the custom text; someone else can then claim it. Switching to a different personalized combination means a new request and paying the fees again from scratch.

Specialty and Military Plate Costs

Alabama offers dozens of specialty plates tied to universities, military branches, charitable organizations, and civic groups. Most carry an additional $50 annual fee on top of the base registration cost.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Some military plates carry significant fee benefits. Gold Star Family plates exempt the registrant from the registration fee, ad valorem tax, and all additional fees on one vehicle.1Alabama Department of Revenue. License Plates Archive Disabled veteran plates offer tiered exemptions based on disability rating: veterans rated at 10 percent or higher are exempt from registration and issuance fees on their first plate. Ad valorem taxes still apply unless the vehicle was paid for in whole or part by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in which case both registration fees and ad valorem taxes are waived.7Alabama Department of Revenue. Disabled Veteran US Air Force Eligibility requires proof of service, such as a DD-214.

Disability Access Plates and Placards

Drivers or passengers with qualifying disabilities can obtain a disability access plate or a removable windshield placard. The application requires a physician’s certification on a form approved by the Commissioner of Revenue. Temporary placards are available for short-term conditions and also require a physician’s certification.8Justia Law. Alabama Code 32-6-231.1 – Military Distinctive License Plate Designation for Handicapped Individuals These credentials must be renewed and may require updated medical documentation at renewal.

Vintage Vehicle Plates

Vehicles over 30 years old operated as collector’s items qualify for a vintage vehicle plate. Eligible vehicles include private passenger cars, trucks or truck tractors weighing 26,000 pounds or less, motorcycles, and fire trucks. A vehicle displaying a vintage plate cannot be used commercially, to transport passengers or property for hire, or as a service vehicle.9Alabama Legislature. What You Need to Bring to Register

Every motor vehicle driven on Alabama’s public roads must be registered through the county licensing office where the owner lives. New residents have 30 calendar days after moving into the state. Missing that window triggers a $15 delinquency penalty plus interest.10Alabama Department of Revenue. In Which Situations Does the State of Alabama Charge a Delinquent Penalty for the Registration of a Motor Vehicle

What you bring depends on the vehicle’s status:

  • New vehicle: a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin and a bill of sale showing the purchase price, used to calculate sales tax.
  • Used vehicle with an Alabama title: the properly assigned Alabama certificate of title and a bill of sale.
  • Out-of-state vehicle: the out-of-state title, previous registration, and a bill of sale. You must also bring the vehicle itself for a VIN inspection performed on site by the licensing official.11Alabama Department of Revenue. 810-5-1-.247 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspections

You will also need a valid Alabama driver’s license or state-issued ID and proof of liability insurance. Alabama requires at least $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage coverage, from an insurer authorized to write motor vehicle coverage in the state.12Alabama Department of Revenue. Mandatory Liability Insurance Without valid insurance, the county office will not process your registration.

Renewal Costs and Late Penalties

Alabama vehicle registrations must be renewed annually. Your renewal month is assigned based on the first letter of your last name under a staggered system running January through November, and the registration expires on the last day of that month. Leased, commercial, and fleet vehicles renew in October or November instead.13Alabama Department of Revenue. In What Months Are License Plates Renewed

You can renew in person at your county licensing office or online through ALTagRenewals.com, which covers most Alabama counties. Some counties also accept mail-in renewals. Bring your current registration, proof of insurance, and payment for the registration fee plus ad valorem taxes.

Missing your renewal month triggers a $15 late penalty plus interest.10Alabama Department of Revenue. In Which Situations Does the State of Alabama Charge a Delinquent Penalty for the Registration of a Motor Vehicle Not all counties mail renewal notices, and the state is clear that failing to receive one does not excuse a late renewal.13Alabama Department of Revenue. In What Months Are License Plates Renewed Mark your calendar rather than waiting for a letter.

Insurance Lapse Reinstatement Fees

Alabama periodically verifies that registered vehicles carry valid insurance. If your coverage lapsed on the verification date, you must visit the county licensing office with proof of current Alabama liability insurance and pay a reinstatement fee: $200 for a first suspension, $400 for any subsequent suspension.14Alabama Department of Revenue. What Do I Do If I Did Not Have Insurance on the Verification Date These are separate from any court fines for driving without insurance.

If the vehicle was stored, inoperable, or otherwise not in use on the verification date, you can claim a one-time exemption from the reinstatement fee by surrendering the plate at the county office within 30 days of the verification notice.14Alabama Department of Revenue. What Do I Do If I Did Not Have Insurance on the Verification Date Miss the 30-day window and the registration is suspended anyway.

Transfers, Credits, and Replacements

Alabama assigns plates to individuals, not vehicles. When you sell one car and buy another in the same registration category, you can transfer your existing plate. Visit the county licensing office with proof of ownership for the new vehicle and pay the $1.25 state transfer fee, plus any local issuance fees, applicable taxes, or prorated registration charges.2Alabama Department of Revenue. What Is the Fee to Transfer a License Plate Plates generally cannot be transferred between unrelated individuals, though Alabama law does allow transfer to a surviving spouse.

Pro Rata Credit When You Sell

If you sell, trade, or otherwise dispose of a vehicle before the registration period ends, you are entitled to a pro rata credit for the ad valorem taxes already paid on the remaining months. You have 60 days from the date of sale, trade, destruction, theft without recovery, or permanent removal from Alabama to claim this credit voucher at the county office where you originally paid.15Alabama Department of Revenue. How Long Do I Have to Apply for the Credit Voucher The voucher can be applied toward registration of a replacement vehicle. Miss the 60-day window and you forfeit the credit entirely, so handle it the same week you close the sale.

Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Plate

Report lost or stolen plates to law enforcement before you visit the county office for a replacement. That step protects you if someone uses your plate fraudulently. The county office will issue a replacement, though the fee varies by plate type. For a personalized or specialty plate, the same combination or design may not be immediately available, and you may need to submit a new request through PROS. A temporary tag can be issued while you wait.
