Alabama car insurance requirements start with a liability policy of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage. Those limits, usually written as 25/50/25, apply to every vehicle driven on a public road in the state. Alabama checks coverage electronically, so a lapsed policy can be flagged without a traffic stop, and the penalties stack quickly once it is.
The Minimum Limits
Alabama Code 32-7-6 sets the floor. Every policy must include:
- $25,000 for bodily injury to one person in a single accident
- $50,000 total for bodily injury to all people in a single accident
- $25,000 for damage to another person’s vehicle or property
These are minimums, not recommendations. A serious crash can burn through $50,000 in medical bills alone, and anything above the policy limit becomes the at-fault driver’s personal debt. Liability coverage pays the other party’s losses only; it does nothing for your own car or your own injuries. The policy has to come from an insurer authorized to write motor vehicle liability coverage in Alabama.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7-6 – Security Required; Suspensions; Applicability
A traditional insurance policy is the usual way to comply, but Alabama also accepts a motor vehicle liability bond or a cash deposit with the State Treasurer at the same 25/50/25 minimums.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Mandatory Liability Insurance
Proof You Have to Carry
Keep evidence of insurance in the vehicle and hand it over when an officer asks. Acceptable forms include:
- An insurance card or temporary card from your insurer
- The current declarations page of your Alabama liability policy
- An Alabama liability insurance binder or certificate of liability insurance
- A motor vehicle rental agreement that specifies minimum liability coverage
- For a vehicle bought within the past 20 days, the current insurance card for the vehicle it replaced along with proof of the purchase

Alabama Code 32-7A-6 – Evidence of Insurance; Insurance Card You also need proof to register a vehicle or renew a registration; the county licensing official has to either verify coverage electronically or review your documents before issuing tags.4Alabama Legislature. How the State Checks Your Coverage
Alabama runs an Online Insurance Verification System (OIVS) that lets the Department of Revenue confirm whether a registered vehicle has active coverage. When the system cannot confirm insurance on a vehicle, the department mails a notice to the registered owner’s last known address. You then have 30 calendar days to submit proof that coverage was in force on the verification date.5Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-11 – Online Insurance Verification System
There is also a post-accident review track. Under the Alabama Mandatory Liability Insurance Act of 2016, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reviews motor vehicle incidents and can pursue drivers who were uninsured at the time of a crash but not cited at the scene.6Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Mandatory Liability Insurance Avoiding a ticket after a fender-bender does not necessarily close the file.
Penalties for Driving Without Insurance
Alabama penalizes uninsured drivers on three separate tracks, and a single incident can trigger more than one.
Citations From an Officer
If you cannot show proof during a stop or after an accident, you can be cited. A first conviction carries a fine of up to $500. A second or later conviction is a Class B misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $1,000 and a possible driver’s license suspension of up to six months.7Alabama Department of Revenue. Registration Suspension
The OIVS can suspend your registration on its own, independent of any traffic stop. Reinstatement requires proof of current coverage plus a fee:
- First violation: $200 reinstatement fee, and the owner must maintain proof of financial responsibility for one year.
- Second or later violation within the preceding two registration years: $400 reinstatement fee, a mandatory four-month registration suspension, and proof of financial responsibility for two registration years. A conviction on a second offense is a Class B misdemeanor.8Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration
“Proof of financial responsibility” usually means an SR-22 filing from your insurer, which raises your premium for as long as the requirement lasts.
Civil Penalties After an Accident
If you were uninsured at the time of an accident and were not cited on scene, ALEA can still impose a civil penalty after reviewing the incident. The tiers are $200 for a first offense, $300 for a second, and $400 for a third or later. If you neither pay nor request a hearing within 45 days, your driver’s license is suspended for 90 days, and getting it back costs another $100.9Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Uninsured Motorists Face Civil Penalties Effective Nov. 1
Stack those tracks together and one uninsured accident can produce a fine, a civil penalty, a suspended registration, a suspended license, reinstatement fees, and years of elevated premiums.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Every Alabama auto liability policy has to include uninsured motorist (UM) coverage unless the named insured rejects it in writing. Once rejected, the insurer does not have to offer it again at renewal unless you ask in writing. UM coverage pays your own medical bills and other losses when the at-fault driver has no insurance or cannot be identified, as in a hit-and-run.10Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7-23 – Uninsured Motorist Coverage
UM matters more in Alabama than in most states because of contributory negligence. Alabama is one of a handful of jurisdictions where being even slightly at fault in a crash bars you from recovering anything from the other driver. Not a reduction, a complete bar. That rule does not apply to claims based on wanton or reckless conduct, but for ordinary negligence claims, a small share of fault ends the case. UM coverage is one of the few reliable fallbacks when the fault picture is unclear or the other driver has nothing to collect against. Think hard before signing that rejection form.
Rideshare Drivers Need More
If you drive for Uber, Lyft, or another transportation network company, 25/50/25 is not enough the moment you open the app. The Alabama Transportation Network Company Act sets two tiers:
- Logged on and waiting for a ride request: $50,000 per person for bodily injury, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage.
- From accepting a ride through drop-off: $1,000,000 combined for bodily injury and property damage.11Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7C-2 – Insurance Requirements
This coverage can come from the driver’s own policy, the TNC’s policy, or a combination. Most personal auto policies exclude any loss that happens while the driver is logged on to a TNC network, and that exclusion can wipe out liability, collision, comprehensive, and medical payments coverage during app hours. Confirm with your personal insurer and the TNC exactly what is covered in each phase before you start driving.12Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7C-4 – Coverage Exclusions; Disclosures
New Residents and Newly Purchased Vehicles
Move to Alabama with a car registered elsewhere and you have 30 days from the date the vehicle enters the state to register it here. Before you can register, the vehicle has to be covered by an Alabama liability policy; an out-of-state policy will not satisfy Alabama registration.13Alabama Department of Revenue. Active-duty military members stationed in another state can satisfy the Alabama requirement with liability coverage from the state where they are stationed, as long as its limits meet or exceed 25/50/25. That coverage does not invalidate their Alabama registration or license.14Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-5 – Exceptions
What the Law Does Not Cover
A few categories fall outside the insurance mandate. Alabama Code 32-7A-5 excuses vehicles owned and operated by the United States, the State of Alabama, or a local government; trailers of most kinds, including semitrailers, travel trailers, boat trailers, and utility trailers; farm equipment and vehicles moved solely by animal power; dealer inventory covered by a blanket commercial policy; vehicles covered by a certificate of self-insurance; and vehicles regulated by federal or state carrier authorities where the operator has already filed proof of financial responsibility at 25/50/25 or above. A stored, non-operating vehicle does not need active coverage either, though any insurance clauses in a financing agreement still apply.14Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-5 – Exceptions For everyone else on Alabama roads, the 25/50/25 policy is the price of driving legally.
