Alabama State Tax Refund Schedule and Processing Times

The Alabama state tax refund schedule starts on March 2, when the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) begins releasing individual income tax refunds for the season. If you e-file, expect your refund within roughly six to eight weeks of filing. Paper returns take much longer, with ALDOR asking filers to allow at least 90 days before following up.

When Refunds Start Going Out

Alabama’s individual income tax deadline mirrors the federal April 15 date, and ALDOR generally begins accepting returns in late January. The department has announced that it starts releasing refunds on March 2.1Alabama Department of Revenue. Alabama Income Tax Filing Season in Full Swing Early e-filers who submit in late January can sometimes see a deposit by early to mid-March. File closer to April 15 and you land further back in the queue.

How Long Processing Takes

Electronic returns move through ALDOR faster than paper ones by a wide margin. The department asks that you wait at least six weeks after filing before checking on your refund, and notes that if nothing has arrived within eight to ten weeks, the return may have been pulled for review.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Paper returns are slower because ALDOR staff must key the data in by hand before automated checks even start. The 2025 Form 40 instructions tell paper filers to allow at least 90 days after mailing before following up on a missing refund.3Alabama Department of Revenue. How to Check Your Refund Status

ALDOR offers three ways to track a refund. Two of them are automated, so there’s no reason to sit on hold.

Online Through My Alabama Taxes

The main tool is “Where’s My Refund?” on the My Alabama Taxes portal at myalabamataxes.alabama.gov. You can use the refund lookup directly or log into a full MAT account for more detail on your return.4Alabama Department of Revenue. How Can I Check on My Individual Income Tax Refund? By Phone

ALDOR runs two phone lines for refund questions. The 24-hour toll-free automated hotline is 1-855-894-7391, and the daytime refund status line is 334-309-2612.2Alabama Department of Revenue. What the Status Labels Mean

The tracker shows a status that tells you where your return sits.

  • Received: ALDOR has the return but hasn’t started a detailed review. Nothing for you to do.
  • Processing: Examiners are verifying credits, deductions, and withholding. Most returns pass through without any input from you.
  • Additional review: Something needs a closer look. That could be an income mismatch, an unusual credit, or a fraud flag. You may get a letter asking for documentation.
  • Issued: The refund is approved and sent. Direct deposits usually post within a few business days. Paper checks take longer because of mailing.

If the status stays put for weeks, don’t file a second return. Duplicates create more work and push your refund further back.

What Can Delay Your Refund

Most delays fall into a handful of predictable buckets, and most are avoidable.

Math errors and missing schedules top the list. Claim a credit but forget the supporting schedule and ALDOR can’t finish the return until you send it in. Same for unsigned returns or missing W-2s. The clock effectively restarts once ALDOR asks for the fix.

Identity verification flags have grown more common as states step up fraud prevention. If ALDOR’s systems find something suspicious, the department may send a letter before releasing the refund. Responding fast is the single biggest thing you can do to shorten the delay. ALDOR has authority to hold refunds while verifying accuracy, and is required to grant or deny a refund petition within six months unless both sides agree to an extension.5Alabama Legislature. Returns with business income, rental property, or less common credits also draw extra scrutiny. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Complex returns just take more manual review, and you should plan for several extra weeks.

Why Your Refund May Be Smaller Than Expected

A shrunken refund often isn’t a mistake. It’s an offset. Both federal and state programs can pull money out of your Alabama refund to cover certain debts.

The federal Treasury Offset Program (TOP) lets the government withhold tax refund payments to satisfy past-due federal and state debts, including overdue child support, defaulted federal student loans, and other obligations.6Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program If TOP reduces your refund, you’ll get a notice showing the offset amount and the agency that received the money.

Alabama also runs its own offset for unpaid child support. If a noncustodial parent owes at least $500 in arrears, the state can intercept their Alabama refund to cover the debt. Written advance notice is required before referral, and you have the right to contest the determination or request an administrative review hearing.7Alabama Administrative Code. ALDOR itself can credit your overpayment against any outstanding state tax debts before sending you the balance.5Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 40 Revenue and Taxation Section 40-2A-7 If you owe back taxes to Alabama, your refund is the first place the department looks.

Interest on Late Refunds

Alabama pays interest on overpayments held past the legally required timeframe. The annual rate for 2026 is 7%, set under Section 40-1-44 of the Code of Alabama.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Quarterly Interest Rates Interest accrues automatically. You don’t need to file a separate claim for it.

Deadline to Claim a Refund You Never Received

If you overpaid Alabama income tax and never filed, or realized the overpayment years later, the window to claim the money is limited. Alabama law lets you file a refund petition within three years from the date the original return was filed, or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.9Alabama Administrative Code. Miss these windows and the money stays with the state, regardless of how clear the overpayment was.

For refund claims tied to a final assessment you already paid, the deadline is two years from the date that assessment was paid.9Alabama Administrative Code.
