An Alabama temporary driver’s license is the paper document handed to you at the ALEA counter or printed from the online portal after a license transaction, and it stands in as your legal driving credential for 30 days while your permanent card is produced and mailed.1Madison County, AL. How Long It’s Valid and What It Lets You Do
The temporary license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.1Madison County, AL. Driver’s License Information During that window you have full driving privileges for whatever class of license it shows. A temporary Class D lets you drive a passenger car. A temporary Class A lets you operate a commercial combination vehicle. Driving after the 30th day, even if your permanent card hasn’t shown up, puts you in the same position as driving without a valid license. That’s the enforceable line, not a technicality.
What the Paper Document Contains
Don’t expect anything that looks like an ID card. The temporary is printed on standard office paper, usually black and white. It carries your full name, address, date of birth, license class, and a photograph pulled from your image on file. It also prints the issuance date and expiration date, both of which are worth checking before you leave the counter or close the browser tab.
Because it’s plain paper, it’s fragile. Folding, water damage, or ordinary wear can render it hard to read, which becomes a problem during a traffic stop. Some drivers laminate the sheet or slip it into a clear plastic sleeve. ALEA doesn’t formally instruct you to do either.
Why It Won’t Work for Air Travel
This is the trap that catches the most people. Since May 7, 2025, TSA has required REAL ID-compliant identification at airport security checkpoints.3Transportation Security Administration. Your temporary paper license is not a REAL ID. It carries no gold star, and TSA will not accept it at the checkpoint. Even if you applied for and paid for a STAR ID, the interim paper document won’t get you through security.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If you have to fly during the 30-day wait, bring a valid U.S. passport or another federally accepted ID. The same limit applies at secure federal buildings and military installations that require REAL ID credentials. Plan around it especially carefully if you just moved to Alabama and surrendered your prior state’s license during the transfer.
Using It to Vote
Alabama requires photo ID at the polls. The Secretary of State’s list of accepted identification includes a “Valid Alabama Driver’s License,” current or expired within the past 60 days.5Alabama Secretary of State. Valid ID at the Polls The list doesn’t specifically address whether a temporary paper license counts as a “valid Alabama driver’s license” for voting.
If an election falls inside your 30-day window, bringing a backup form of accepted ID is the safer play. A U.S. passport, valid military ID, or a current state-issued ID from another state all appear on Alabama’s approved voter ID list.5Alabama Secretary of State. If Your Permanent Card Doesn’t Arrive in Time
ALEA mails the permanent card to the address on your transaction. Most arrive well inside the 30-day window, but there’s no publicly stated delivery guarantee. Confirm your mailing address before you leave the office or submit an online renewal. A wrong address is the most common reason cards go missing.
