Alabama Temporary Tag Requirements: Deadlines, Fees, and Extensions

An Alabama temporary tag lets you legally drive a newly purchased vehicle on public roads for 20 days from the date it’s issued, giving you a short window to gather your paperwork and complete a permanent registration at your county licensing office. Dealers issue the tag at the point of sale through a state electronic portal. For private sales, new residents, or any situation where a permanent plate can’t be issued right away, the county licensing official (usually the Probate Judge or License Commissioner) issues the tag instead.1Alabama Administrative Code. How You Get a Temporary Tag

If you buy from a licensed Alabama dealer, the dealer handles the tag. Any dealer who serves as a designated agent of the Alabama Department of Revenue is authorized to issue a temporary license tag and registration certificate for the vehicles it sells, and the record lands in the state registration database as soon as it’s generated.2Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-6-211 – Issuance of Temporary License Tag and Registration Certificate

Private-sale buyers take a different route. Go to your county licensing office and ask for a temporary tag. County officials can issue one whenever “just cause” exists, which the state reads broadly: the seller didn’t hand over the paperwork you need to apply for a title, a permanent plate can’t be issued yet, you’ve just moved to Alabama with a vehicle from another state, and similar situations all qualify.1Alabama Administrative Code. How Long the Tag Lasts and How to Extend It

A temporary tag is valid for exactly 20 days from the date of issuance and is tied to the specific vehicle it was issued for. The expiration date is printed on the tag.3Justia. Alabama Code 32-6-214 – Valid 20 Days; Renewed, Successive Tags

Dealers cannot renew or reissue a tag for the same vehicle. If your dealer tag is running out and you still don’t have what you need for permanent registration, don’t go back to the dealer. Go to the county licensing official, who can issue up to three successive 20-day tags for the same vehicle when just cause exists. That caps the total temporary period at 60 days.3Justia. What to Bring for Permanent Registration

Converting the temporary tag to a permanent plate happens at the county office, and the paperwork depends on whether the vehicle is new or used.

  • New vehicles: the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO), the factory document establishing first legal ownership.4Alabama Administrative Code. Alabama Administrative Code 810-5-1-.238 – Registration of Motor Vehicles Not Subject to Titling
  • Used vehicles: the certificate of title signed over by the previous owner.
  • Both cases: a title application, a bill of sale showing the purchase price (the county uses it to calculate tax), a valid driver’s license or state ID for every person listed as an owner, and proof of insurance.

Alabama requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage, written on an Alabama policy by a company qualified in the state.5Alabama Department of Revenue. Mandatory Liability Insurance The county checks your coverage through the state’s Online Insurance Verification System. If the system can’t confirm it, bring an insurance card, current declarations page, binder, certificate, or electronic proof.6Alabama Department of Revenue. OIVS User Guide

What You’ll Pay

The title application fee is $15 to the Alabama Department of Revenue, plus a $1.50 designated agent fee kept by the county for processing. Multiple title transactions on a single application count as one transaction for fee purposes.7Justia. Alabama Code 32-8-6 – Schedule of Fees and Charges

Alabama’s state sales or use tax on motor vehicle purchases is 2%, with county and municipal taxes stacking on top, so the total rate depends on where you register.8Alabama Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Rates The county collects the full amount at registration based on the bill of sale price.

Alabama also collects an annual ad valorem (property) tax on motor vehicles as part of registration. The tax is based on a value the Department of Revenue sets as of October 1 each year and is prorated from your purchase date or the date the vehicle entered the state. It’s due at your first registration, not later. If you’re bringing a vehicle in from out of state and can’t document when it arrived, the state may presume it has been here a full year for tax purposes.9Alabama Legislature. If You Miss the 20-Day Deadline

Driving on an expired temporary tag is a misdemeanor in Alabama. The same statute reaches false statements on a temporary tag application and dealers who knowingly issue tags based on false information. A conviction carries a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both.10Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-6-219 – False Statements, Operating with Expired Tag, Unlawful; Penalty

Separately, the state charges a $15 late-registration fee when you fail to register within 20 calendar days of purchase. Officers are directed to stop drivers operating vehicles without a current license plate, and a conviction for that offense carries a minimum $25 fine.11Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 32 Motor Vehicles and Traffic Section 32-6-65 The two problems compound: a traffic stop while you’re driving on an expired tag, and the late penalty waiting for you at the county office.

There’s also a tax tail. A vehicle with a delinquent registration can be assessed back ad valorem taxes for up to two prior years plus the current year, which adds up quickly on a newer vehicle.9Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-12-253 – Ad Valorem Taxation of Motor Vehicles

Active-Duty Military From Another State

If you’re stationed in Alabama but your legal residence is elsewhere, you don’t have to re-register your vehicle here. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act protects your home-state residency for tax purposes when military orders bring you to another state, and it blocks the duty-station state from taxing your personal property, including a motor vehicle, as long as you’re paying any applicable fees in your home state.12U.S. Department of Justice. Heavy Vehicles Have an Extra Step

If the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, you must file IRS Form 2290, pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, and bring a stamped Schedule 1 to the county office before Alabama will issue a permanent plate.13Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return This mainly affects commercial trucks, but plan for it before your temporary tag runs out.
