A certified copy of an Alameda County birth certificate costs $36 and is issued by the Clerk-Recorder’s office at 1106 Madison Street in Oakland. You can order in person, by mail, or online, and the office can only issue records for births that occurred in Alameda County. In-person requests are often filled the same day; mail and online orders typically take two to three weeks to process once the office receives them.1Alameda County Clerk-Recorder’s Office. Authorized Copy or Informational Copy
Both versions contain the same birth data and both cost $36. The difference is what you can do with them. An authorized certified copy is a full legal identity document, usable for a passport, driver’s license, or similar purpose. An informational copy carries a stamped legend reading “INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY” and cannot be used to prove who you are.
You qualify for an authorized copy if you are the person named on the certificate, a parent or legal guardian, a spouse or domestic partner, a child, grandchild, grandparent, or sibling, an attorney representing the registrant or the estate, a law enforcement or government official acting in an official capacity, or someone with a court order for the record. Legal guardians have to show court documentation of their status. Anyone else can still order a copy, but it will be the informational version.3California Legislative Information. What the Application Asks For
You’ll need four pieces of information about the person on the record:
- Full name at birth
- Date of birth
- City where the birth occurred
- Mother’s maiden last name
Provide as much detail as you can. The $36 fee applies whether or not the office locates the record, so a weak search is still a paid search.4Alameda County. Alameda County Auditor-Controller-Clerk-Recorder – Birth Certificate

Fee Waiver for Homeless Applicants
California waives the issuance fee for people experiencing homelessness, including homeless children and youth. You’ll need a signed Affidavit of Homeless Status completed by both you and a verifying homeless services provider, such as a staffer at a government or nonprofit homeless agency, a licensed attorney, a school social worker, or a law enforcement homeless liaison. Each eligible person gets one fee-free certified copy per application, and the request must go through the county where the birth occurred rather than the state.
When the Record Isn’t Available Yet
If you just had a baby, the certificate won’t be ready immediately. Newborn records from Alameda County hospitals are generally available about four weeks after the birth. Births in the City of Berkeley take longer because those records aren’t forwarded to the county office until roughly two months after delivery.4Alameda County. At the other end, the office does not hold records for births before 1880. Older records require a different historical archive.
If the Birth Didn’t Happen in Alameda County
Each California county can only issue records for births within its own borders, so an Oakland order won’t help you if the birth took place elsewhere. The California Department of Public Health–Vital Records (CDPH-VR) issues certified copies for births anywhere in the state, and the state fee is $31, which is $5 less than Alameda County charges. State processing generally runs longer than county processing, so you’re trading time for the ability to reach any California birth from one place.7California Department of Public Health. Fixing an Error on the Certificate
Amendments do not go through the county. Corrections for a misspelled name, wrong date or time, place of birth, parents’ information, or a change to the sex field to reflect gender identity are handled by CDPH-VR using Form VS 24B, submitted by mail. Processing times and fees are posted on the CDPH Vital Records website, and the office will reach out if additional documentation is needed. Once the amendment is on file, you can order an updated certified copy that reflects the correction.10California Department of Public Health. Amending a California Birth Record
Using the Certificate Abroad
A foreign government that is party to the Hague Apostille Convention will usually ask for an apostille from the California Secretary of State before accepting the certificate. The apostille authenticates the county official’s signature so no further legalization is needed overseas. You can request one by mail to the Notary Public Section in Sacramento, or in person at the Secretary of State’s Sacramento or Los Angeles offices for same-day service. The fee is $20 per apostille, with a $6 special handling fee for in-person service. The Secretary of State also runs periodic apostille pop-up events at county offices around the state; the current schedule is posted on the Secretary of State’s website.11California Secretary of State.
