Alameda County Traffic Ticket: Pay, Contest, or Get a Reduction

If you received an Alameda County traffic ticket, you can look it up, pay it, request traffic school, ask for more time, or file a written contest through the Alameda County Superior Court’s online traffic portal.¹ The portal handles infraction-level citations issued within the county. It does not handle parking tickets, DUI charges, other misdemeanor or felony violations, or citations issued outside Alameda County; those go through the Criminal Division, the Probation Department, or the court in the issuing county.²

What You Need to Look Up Your Citation

Pull the ticket out and find the citation number the officer wrote on it. You will also need your name and date of birth exactly as they appear on the citation, because the system matches those against court and DMV records. Some Alameda citations include an Online Coding (OC) number near the citation number or payment instructions; if yours has one, the portal may ask for it.

Look at the date printed at the bottom of the ticket. That is not a court date. It is your action deadline, the day by which you need to pay, request traffic school, file a contest, or ask for an extension.² Missing it without doing anything is what triggers the penalties described at the end of this article.

Why the Total Bail Is So Much Higher Than the Fine

The number labeled “total bail” on your citation is almost always several times the base fine for the offense. California layers mandatory penalty assessments, a 20-percent state surcharge on the base fine, and per-conviction court operations and criminal conviction assessments on top of every base fine.³ A violation with a $35 base fine can produce a total bail of several hundred dollars once every assessment is stacked. That total is what you pay to forfeit bail, and it is also the amount you must deposit if you contest by written declaration.

Paying Your Ticket Online

Once you are logged into the portal, you can forfeit bail (which means pleading guilty and paying the fine) or pay traffic school fees if you qualify. The system takes Visa and Mastercard.⁴ A processing or convenience fee may be added. The court does not publish a fixed convenience-fee amount, so review the total before you confirm.

Installment Plans

If you cannot pay the full bail at once, the portal lets you forfeit bail in installments, and the same option applies to traffic school fees.⁴ Miss a scheduled installment and the court can add a civil assessment of up to $100 on top of what you still owe.⁵

Requesting More Time

Need extra time? The portal lets you extend your citation due date, fine due date, or traffic school completion date.⁴ California courts generally grant one extension of about 30 days on eligible citations. Request it before your current deadline passes. The new date will show on screen, and you may get an email confirmation if you supply an address.

Traffic School Eligibility

Completing a court-approved traffic school keeps the conviction point off your driving record, which can prevent an insurance premium jump. The rules are strict. You can generally request traffic school if all of these are true:

You hold a valid California driver’s license at the time of the request.⁶
Your ticket is for an infraction, not a misdemeanor.
You have not attended or elected traffic school for another violation in the past 18 months, measured from the earlier violation date to the current one.⁷
If it is a speeding ticket, the alleged speed is no more than 25 mph over the posted limit.⁷

Some offenses are automatically disqualifying: alcohol- or drug-related violations, citations in a commercial vehicle, and tank-vehicle violations.⁷ You also cannot elect traffic school on a citation with an unresolved failure-to-appear or an unpaid civil assessment.

If you take traffic school, you pay the full bail amount plus a court administrative fee, and the school itself charges tuition.² Confirm eligibility through the portal before you pay. Pay first without confirming and the point can still land on your record even after you finish the course.

Commercial Driver’s License Holders

Federal rules prohibit states from masking traffic convictions for holders of a commercial driver’s license. Even if the violation happened in your personal car, traffic school will not keep the point off your CDL record. Contact the court directly before choosing any option if you hold a CDL.⁶

Correctable Violations (Fix-It Tickets)

Some citations are marked correctable, meaning you can clear them by fixing the problem and showing proof. Common examples are a broken taillight, expired registration, or driving without proof of insurance. Three steps: fix the issue, get the Certificate of Correction on the back of the ticket signed by a law enforcement officer or other authorized person, and submit it to the court with a $25 dismissal fee per ticket.⁸

For expired registration, bring current registration to the court clerk. For a proof-of-insurance ticket, show that coverage was active on the date of the stop. Handle correctable violations before your due date, because an unresolved fix-it ticket escalates the same way any unpaid ticket does.

Contesting by Written Declaration

You can fight the citation without appearing in court through a trial by written declaration. Fill out Form TR-205, write your version of events, attach any supporting evidence such as photos or diagrams, and submit it to the court with the full bail amount as a deposit.⁹ If the judge rules in your favor, the deposit is refunded.⁵ Form TR-205 is available on the California Courts website.¹⁰

Everything must reach the court by your original or extended due date. The Alameda traffic division accepts documents at a courthouse drop box, by mail, or by email at asktraffic@alameda.courts.ca.gov.² If mailing, the postmark must fall on or before your deadline. The citing officer can also submit a written statement, and a judge reviews both sides and mails a written ruling.

If You Lose: Trial De Novo

A loss on the written declaration is not the end. You can request a brand-new in-person trial by filing Form TR-220 within 20 calendar days after the court mails or delivers its decision. Miss that window and the case closes.¹¹

Once your request is in on time, the clerk sets a trial date within 45 days and notifies both you and the officer’s agency.¹¹ The written-declaration evidence does not carry over. Everything starts fresh, and the officer must appear in person to testify. That second chance is one of the strongest reasons to try the written declaration first: a loss just puts you back where you would have been, with the added possibility that the officer will not show up in person.

Asking for a Fine Reduction

If paying the full bail would cause genuine financial hardship, California runs a separate process for reductions. The Judicial Council’s MyCitations online tool lets you request a lower fine, a payment plan, community service in place of payment, or additional time to pay.¹² You must be the defendant (or an attorney or authorized representative), and you need a valid email address, because orders are sent electronically.

Do not use MyCitations if you want to contest the ticket. It is for cases where you accept responsibility but cannot afford the full amount. Submit the request before your due date passes, since an unpaid ticket triggers a civil assessment and a DMV hold that make everything harder to unwind.

What Happens If You Ignore the Ticket

Doing nothing is the worst option. Fail to appear, pay, or otherwise respond by your due date and the court can add a civil assessment of up to $100 to what you already owe.⁵ The court can also report the failure to appear to the DMV, which places a hold on your license and blocks you from renewing until the citation and any added penalties are resolved.

Beyond the money, a willful failure to appear or pay on a traffic citation is itself a misdemeanor under California law, carrying potential jail time and a separate fine. Few courts pursue criminal charges over a routine infraction, but the authority exists, and the DMV hold alone causes problems that compound quickly. If you have already missed your deadline, contact the court. Late resolution is always better than letting the case sit.
