The Anderson County vehicle tax is an annual personal property tax owed on every car, truck, motorcycle, motor home, and trailer registered in the county. You pay it to the Anderson County Treasurer, and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will not issue or renew your registration until the bill is cleared.1Anderson County South Carolina. Auditor and Tax Information The amount is based on what your vehicle is worth and where in the county you live, and it comes due in the month your registration expires.
How Your Bill Is Calculated
Three numbers decide what you owe: your vehicle’s fair market value, the 6% assessment ratio South Carolina applies to personal vehicles, and the total millage rate for your tax district.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue publishes valuation guides that the Anderson County Auditor uses to look up fair market value by make, model, and year.2South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-37-2680 – Determination of Assessed Value of Vehicle If your vehicle isn’t listed, the Auditor sets value from other sources.1Anderson County South Carolina. Auditor and Tax Information That value is multiplied by 6%, then by your district’s millage, which bundles school district funding, county operations, fire service, sewer, and any special public service district charges where you live.
A worked example. Say your vehicle is valued at $18,000 and your tax district’s total millage is 0.359:
- Fair market value: $18,000
- Assessed value at 6%: $1,080
- Tax owed: $1,080 × 0.359 = $387.72
A neighbor in a different school district at 0.342 or 0.419 would get a noticeably different bill for the same vehicle. Millage varies across dozens of tax districts in Anderson County, and whether you live inside a city like Williamston, Belton, or Honea Path changes the mix rather than guaranteeing a higher or lower result. The Auditor’s office publishes an annual levy sheet listing every district’s rate; your tax district code appears on your tax notice and tells you which row to read.3Anderson County South Carolina. Lowering the Bill: High Mileage and Valuation Appeals
If your vehicle has significantly more miles than average for its age, state law requires the valuation guides to include a high mileage adjustment that cuts the fair market value.2South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-37-2680 – Determination of Assessed Value of Vehicle Lower value, lower assessed value, smaller tax.
To get the adjustment in Anderson County, complete the Auditor’s High Mileage Appeal Form. You’ll need your vehicle’s make, model, and current odometer reading, and you sign to certify the reading is accurate.1Anderson County South Carolina. Auditor and Tax Information Record the odometer before you go.
If something other than mileage reduces your vehicle’s market value, like collision damage or mechanical problems, file a general Request for Review with the Auditor instead. That form exists for exactly that purpose.
When and How to Pay
For a vehicle you already own, the County Treasurer mails a tax notice to the address the DMV has on file. The notice shows your account number, the vehicle identification number, and the amount due. Check that the VIN matches your vehicle before you pay; paying on the wrong account is a problem to untangle later.
If you buy from a South Carolina dealership and the dealer handles the plate, property tax typically comes due 120 days after the plate is first issued. If you buy from a private seller or register the vehicle yourself, you pay the Treasurer first and then the DMV will issue the plate.1Anderson County South Carolina. Auditor and Tax Information Transferring a plate from a trade-in generally means no new tax is owed on the replacement until the old registration would have expired; bring the old registration and the bill of sale to the DMV.
Anderson County accepts payment three ways:
- Online through the county’s payment portal, with a convenience fee on card transactions.4Anderson County South Carolina. Anderson County Treasurer
- By mail, with a check or money order and the payment voucher from your notice.
- In person at the Treasurer’s counter in the county office building.
Keep the receipt. You’ll present it at the DMV to get your renewed registration and decal.4Anderson County South Carolina. Anderson County Treasurer If your tag has already expired by the time you pay, you’ll need to go to a DMV office in person rather than renew online.
What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Thirty days past the due date, the County Treasurer can send an electronic notification to the DMV to suspend both your driver’s license and your vehicle registration.5South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-37-2740 – Suspension of Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration for Failure to Pay Taxes A warning letter goes out before that, giving a last chance to pay. Once the suspension takes effect, reinstatement requires paying the overdue tax plus a $50 fee to the DMV.
Driving on a license suspended for unpaid vehicle tax carries its own penalties:
- First offense: fine up to $50
- Second offense: fine up to $250
- Third or subsequent offense: fine up to $500, up to 30 days in jail, or both
The charge can be dismissed if you show proof on your court date that the taxes have been paid.5South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-37-2740 – Suspension of Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration for Failure to Pay Taxes Separately, the county can go back as far as 10 years to collect tax on a vehicle that was kept off the road without being paid on.1Anderson County South Carolina. Who Doesn’t Owe the Tax
A few categories fall outside the vehicle property tax. Active-duty service members stationed in Anderson County but legally domiciled in another state are not required to pay, under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Government-owned vehicles and certain nonprofit-owned vehicles are generally exempt. Large commercial trucks and buses pay road use fees under a separate part of state law rather than ad valorem property tax.
Claiming the Deduction on Your Federal Return
Because the tax is based on value and charged annually, it qualifies as a deductible personal property tax on your federal return.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes You claim it on Schedule A of Form 1040 if you itemize.
It counts against the state and local tax cap along with your South Carolina income tax and any real property tax. For the 2026 tax year the SALT limit is $40,400 for most filers, or $20,200 if you’re married filing separately.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes Only the value-based portion of your bill qualifies. Flat DMV registration or renewal fees do not.
