Anthony Palazzolo: Detroit Mobster Named in Hoffa’s 1975 Murder

Anthony “Tony Pal” Palazzolo was a Detroit mob consigliere whom FBI investigators reportedly came to believe killed Jimmy Hoffa on July 30, 1975. The link between Anthony Palazzolo and the Hoffa case rests on a 1990s FBI wiretap in which he appeared to admit his role, a 2012 informant who told agents he beat and strangled Hoffa to death, and corroborating physical evidence tied to the suspected hit team. He was never charged. He died of stomach cancer on January 4, 2019, at age 78.1Molnar Funeral Home. Anthony Palazzolo Obituary2The Mob Museum. Following the Facts to Possible Hoffa Hit House

Who Palazzolo Was

Anthony James Palazzolo was born on June 1, 1940, and spent most of his life in the downriver Detroit communities of Wyandotte and Taylor, Michigan.1Molnar Funeral Home. His only major federal prosecution came in the mid-1990s, when a jury convicted him on a 22-count indictment covering conspiracy to launder drug proceeds, structuring transactions to evade bank reporting, and failing to file IRS cash-transaction forms. The Sixth Circuit reversed the conspiracy count in December 1995 over flawed jury instructions and sent the case back to the district court.4Findlaw. United States v. How Investigators Connected Him to Hoffa

Jimmy Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, vanished after driving to the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, for a scheduled meeting with Detroit enforcer Anthony “Tony Jack” Giacalone and New Jersey mob figure Anthony “Tony Pro” Provenzano. He called his wife at 2:15 p.m. to say neither man had arrived, and was never seen again. He was declared legally dead in 1982.5ClickOnDetroit. According to investigators and researchers who have worked the case, the FBI’s Detroit field office came to view the killing as a conspiracy initiated by Detroit boss Giacomo “Black Jack” Tocco and capo Tony Jack Giacalone. The suspected hit team was three men: Vito “Billy Jack” Giacalone, the capo believed to have picked Hoffa up from the restaurant parking lot; Salvatore “Sally Bugs” Briguglio, a New Jersey enforcer for Provenzano; and Palazzolo.2The Mob Museum. Three pieces of evidence pointed to Palazzolo specifically. In the 1990s, he was captured on an FBI wiretap apparently bragging about his involvement in the hit. In 2012, an informant told the FBI that Palazzolo “beat and strangled Hoffa to death.” And Hoffa’s DNA was recovered from the trunk and backseat of a maroon Mercury Marquis owned by Joey Giacalone, Billy Giacalone’s nephew, consistent with the theory that Hoffa was transported from the restaurant in that vehicle.2The Mob Museum. The Alleged Scene

Investigators have pointed to the home of Leonard “Little Lenny” Schultz in Franklin Village, Michigan, about five minutes west of the Machus Red Fox, as the probable location of the killing. Schultz was a longtime racketeer with Purple Gang roots who served as a liaison between Hoffa and Tony Jack Giacalone. A source with connections to the Giacalone crew told researchers, “Tony Jack had the house keys and they choked him out in the living room.” Schultz was called before grand juries investigating the Hoffa case but was never charged. He died in 2013.2The Mob Museum. Following the Facts to Possible Hoffa Hit House

What Allegedly Happened to the Body

According to Detroit crime writer Scott Burnstein, the FBI wiretap caught Palazzolo saying he put Hoffa’s body into a meat grinder at the Detroit Sausage Company, a mob-connected facility. The remains were then allegedly burned to ash at a mob-connected sanitation business.6CBC News. Palazzolo Named Publicly in 2025

On July 23, 2025, a public event at Macomb Community College’s South Campus titled “Hoffa Mystery Solved: 50 years later” named Palazzolo as the killer. The panel brought together former federal prosecutor Richard Convertino, Burnstein, and Nove Tocco, a former Detroit Mafia soldier turned government witness.8ClickOnDetroit. 50 Years Later: Panel in Macomb Alleges Jimmy Hoffa Was Killed, Body Disposed in Meat Grinder9The Mob Museum. Convertino said he first found the wiretap recording in 1993 while prosecuting a Detroit mobster, and turned it over to the FBI, where it was “kind of dismissed.”7WWJ Newsradio. Why No One Was Ever Charged

All three suspected members of the hit team died before any Hoffa-related charges were brought. Briguglio was shot dead outside a Manhattan social club in 1978. Billy Jack Giacalone died of natural causes in 2012. Palazzolo died of stomach cancer in January 2019.2The Mob Museum. Following the Facts to Possible Hoffa Hit House5ClickOnDetroit. The Palazzolo theory is one of several that have circulated. Frank Sheeran, the labor figure depicted in the 2019 film The Irishman, claimed before his death that he personally shot Hoffa in a Detroit house, but investigators found that blood at that scene did not belong to Hoffa, and the claim has been widely discounted.5ClickOnDetroit.
