Arizona Form 322 is the one-page schedule you attach to your state income tax return to claim the Public School Tax Credit for cash contributions or fees paid to Arizona public and charter schools. You list each contribution by school, enter the school’s CTDS code and the amount, cap the total at $200 (single or head of household) or $400 (married filing jointly), add any unused credit carried forward from the previous five years, and transfer the result to your Form 140, 140PY, or 140NR.1Arizona Department of Revenue. What to Gather Before You Start
Download the current year’s Form 322 from the Arizona Department of Revenue’s forms page.2Arizona Department of Revenue. Credit for Contributions Made or Fees Paid to Public Schools For every school you contributed to, pull the receipt and confirm it shows:
- The date you paid
- The school’s name and the district or charter holder name
- The nine-digit CTDS (County-Type-District-School) code
- The amount
The CTDS code is the field that most often causes problems. If the receipt doesn’t show it, call the school’s front office or check the Arizona Department of Education’s school listing before you file.3Arizona Department of Revenue. Public School Tax Credit A missing or wrong CTDS is the fastest way to delay processing.
Know your filing-status cap going in. Single and head-of-household filers can claim up to $200. Married couples filing jointly can claim up to $400. Married filing separately caps each spouse at $200.1Arizona Department of Revenue. Form 322 Instructions Contributing above your cap doesn’t raise the credit.
Filling Out Part 1: Current Year’s Credit
Part 1 is split into two sections, and the split matters.
Section A is for contributions made during the tax year itself — January 1 through December 31.4Arizona Department of Revenue. 2024 Credit for Contributions Made or Fees Paid to Public Schools – Arizona Form 322 Instructions For each contribution, fill in the payment date, the CTDS code, the school name, the district or charter holder name, and the dollar amount.
Section B is for contributions made between January 1 and April 15 of the following year that you want to apply to the return you’re filing now.5Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 43-1089.01 – Tax Credit; Public School Fees and Contributions; Definitions A payment made in, say, February 2026 can go on either your 2025 return or your 2026 return — your choice, but not both. If you’re putting it on the prior year, list it in Section B.
Each section provides three lines. If you donated to more than three schools in either window, use the continuation sheet packaged with the form rather than cramming entries together.
Add up Sections A and B. Compare that total to your filing-status cap. The smaller number is your current year’s credit.
Part 2: Carryover From Prior Years
If any of the past five tax years left you with unused Public School Tax Credit, Part 2 is where it comes back in. For each prior year still in the five-year window, enter the original credit amount, how much you’ve already applied in earlier returns, and the balance still available.1Arizona Department of Revenue. Form 322 Instructions The form lists years in order so you apply the oldest balances first. If none of your prior returns show unused credit, skip Part 2 entirely.
Part 3: Total Credit and Transfer
Part 3 adds your current year’s credit from Part 1 to the available carryover from Part 2. That total is what you move to the credit line on your Arizona income tax return. Because the credit is nonrefundable, it can only reduce tax you actually owe — anything above your liability stays on the shelf as carryover for next year.3Arizona Department of Revenue. Public School Tax Credit Married-filing-separately spouses each report their own half on their own form.
Attaching Form 322 and Filing the Return
Form 322 attaches to your main Arizona income tax return: Form 140 for full-year residents, Form 140PY for part-year residents, and Form 140NR for nonresidents. Tax software adds the attachment automatically once you enter the credit information.
If you file on paper, mail everything together to the address that matches your situation:6Arizona Department of Revenue. Mailing Addresses
- Refund or no tax due: Arizona Department of Revenue, P.O. Box 52138, Phoenix, AZ 85072
- Payment enclosed: Arizona Department of Revenue, P.O. Box 52016, Phoenix, AZ 85072
The 2025 Arizona individual return is due April 15, 2026, which is also the last day a Section B contribution can be made and still count on the 2025 return.
Keep Your Receipts
Hold onto your school receipts and a copy of the filed Form 322 for at least four years from the filing date or the return’s due date, whichever is later. That matches Arizona’s standard record-retention window for individual income tax.7Arizona Department of Revenue. Record Keeping If a contribution is ever questioned, the receipt with the CTDS code and the school’s name is what settles it.
If You Don’t Use the Full Credit
Any portion of the credit above your tax liability carries forward for up to five consecutive tax years.5Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 43-1089.01 – Tax Credit; Public School Fees and Contributions; Definitions Apply the oldest year’s balance first — Part 2 is laid out that way for a reason. After five years, whatever is left expires. A quick scan of your prior-year returns each spring is enough to catch unused balances before they lapse.
Make Sure Your Contribution Actually Qualifies
Before you list anything on Form 322, confirm the payment is one the credit covers. Qualifying contributions are cash paid directly to an Arizona public school or charter school for extracurricular activities, character education, standardized testing fees (including AP and college-readiness exams), or CPR training.3Arizona Department of Revenue. Public School Tax Credit Non-cash donations — equipment, stock, volunteer hours — don’t qualify. Money paid to a booster club, PTA, or private foundation doesn’t qualify either, even if the group supports the school; the payment has to go to the school or district itself.5Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 43-1089.01 – Tax Credit; Public School Fees and Contributions; Definitions If the school issued you a tax-credit receipt with its CTDS code, that’s the clearest sign the contribution is eligible.
Claiming the Private School Credit the Same Year
Form 322 only covers public schools. Arizona’s separate credit for contributions to certified school tuition organizations that fund private school scholarships uses different forms, and you can claim both in the same year.8Arizona Department of Revenue. Tax Credits Each has its own cap. The practical ceiling for both together is still your total Arizona tax liability, since neither credit is refundable.
