Arizona ID Security Features: UV, Barcode, and Mobile ID

Arizona ID security features include a laser-engraved photo and ghost image, polycarbonate card construction, UV-reactive hidden artwork, microprint, laser-perforated state outlines, raised tactile data, a PDF417 barcode on the back, and the gold REAL ID star on travel-compliant cards.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover Each layer is designed so that tampering with one element leaves evidence on another, which is what makes a convincing counterfeit so difficult to produce. Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant credential has been required at TSA airport checkpoints, so these features matter for everyday travel and not just for law enforcement.2Transportation Security Administration. What You Can See in Normal Light

The main portrait is laser-engraved in black and white rather than printed in color. Laser engraving burns the image into the card’s inner layers, so swapping or altering a photo would destroy the card itself.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover A smaller ghost image repeats the cardholder’s likeness alongside the main photo, which means any photo substitution would have to alter both images at once.3Arizona Department of Transportation. The background carries Arizona-themed artwork, including Grand Canyon imagery first introduced in earlier redesigns and carried forward with refinements.4Arizona Department of Transportation. The Evolution of Arizona’s Driver License Fine-line patterns and color gradients in this artwork resist accurate reproduction on standard printers and scanners. Two high-resolution images on the card shift depending on the viewing angle, adding a layer that flat counterfeits cannot replicate.

The Gold Star and the “Not For Federal Identification” Label

Arizona issues two main credential types, and each carries a visual marker that tells officials and the cardholder what the card can be used for. A Travel ID (the REAL ID-compliant version) displays a gold star in the upper corner, indicating it meets federal security standards for boarding domestic flights and entering restricted federal buildings.5Arizona Department of Transportation. Vertical Under-21 Cards and the Veteran Designation

Cardholders under 21 receive a vertical card instead of the standard horizontal layout. “Under 21” appears next to the photo along with the date the holder turns 21, so bartenders, retailers, and officers can verify age at a glance. After turning 21, the holder can replace the card with the regular horizontal format.8Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Code 28-3165 – Nonoperating Identification Licenses

Veterans can have “VETERAN” printed on the front of the card by presenting qualifying military documentation — such as a DD-214, active or inactive duty military ID, or a Veterans of Foreign Wars card — at an MVD office or authorized third party. The first time around requires an in-person visit and a new photo, but once the designation is on your record, future replacement cards include it automatically.10Arizona Department of Transportation. What Appears Under UV Light and Magnification

Under ultraviolet light, Arizona cards reveal hidden images that are invisible in normal conditions. The ringtail, Arizona’s state mammal, has been embedded as a UV security feature since the 2014 card redesign, and the 2023 design update added more hidden images.11Arizona Department of Transportation. Rocky the Ringtail Has Been Keeping Arizona Driver Licenses Secure The inks used for these elements are not commercially available, which creates a real obstacle for anyone trying to reproduce them. MVD intentionally keeps the full inventory of hidden features out of public documentation.

Microprint adds another verification layer by embedding text so small it looks like a solid line or border pattern to the naked eye. Under magnification the text becomes legible, typically spelling out the state name or similar identifiers. Scanners and consumer printers blur these microscopic characters, so a convincing counterfeit tends to fail the magnification test, and checking the microprint is one of the fastest ways for a trained examiner to flag a fake.

The card also carries laser perforations, tiny holes drilled through the polycarbonate in the shape of Arizona’s outline. Hold the card up to a light source and the state silhouette appears clearly. Replicating that pattern requires the same precision equipment used during manufacturing.

The Feel of a Real Card

Arizona credentials are built from 100% polycarbonate, a rigid layered plastic that is fused under heat into a single solid structure. Unlike the flexible PVC used in earlier designs, polycarbonate cannot be peeled apart without destroying the card.1Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona Driver License and ID Card Gets a Makeover You cannot separate layers, insert a new photo, or chemically erase printed data. The material is also durable enough that Arizona issues credentials with validity periods up to 12 years.

Run a finger across the card and the date of birth feels raised. That field is physically engraved rather than surface-printed, so it cannot be covered with a sticker or ink layer that matches. Anyone checking manually can feel whether the raised data agrees with what is printed. A mismatch between tactile and printed information gives away any attempt to alter the date of birth. State law specifically requires an issuance process that prevents photo superimposition without ready detection.9Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 28-3165 – Nonoperating Identification Licenses

The Barcode on the Back

The back of every Arizona credential carries a PDF417 two-dimensional barcode, the format required by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators for all U.S. driver licenses and ID cards.12American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. 2020 AAMVA DL/ID Card Design Standard It stores the cardholder’s biographical information in a dense machine-readable format that mirrors the data printed on the front.

When law enforcement, airport security, or a bank scans the barcode, the encoded data is compared with what appears on the card’s face. Altering the printed name, address, or date of birth produces a mismatch, which flags the card as potentially tampered. Modifying the barcode itself requires specialized knowledge of the encoding format, while altering printed text is comparatively easier, so the barcode functions as an independent second record that has to agree with the first.

Mobile Driver License Security

Arizona also offers a mobile driver license (mDL) that lives on a smartphone through Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or a standalone MVD app. The mobile credential is legally valid for the same uses as a physical card.13Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License Security works differently on a phone. The cryptographic keys that verify your identity sit inside the device’s tamper-resistant secure hardware (Apple’s Secure Enclave or Android’s Trusted Execution Environment) and never leave it, so malware on the phone cannot extract them.

The mDL also allows selective disclosure. If a store only needs to confirm you are over 21, the mDL can share just that yes-or-no answer without revealing your full name, address, or date of birth. Transactions are contactless; you hold the phone near the verifier’s reader.14Arizona Department of Transportation. Apple Wallet The mDL works at eligible TSA checkpoints and is recognized in other states, but acceptance depends on whether the business or agency has reader technology on hand. MVD recommends keeping your physical card as a backup.13Arizona Department of Transportation. Mobile Driver License

Penalties for Forging an Arizona ID

Forging an Arizona driver license or ID card is a class 4 felony under state law.15Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 13-2002 – Forgery; Classification; Definitions For a first-time offender, sentencing ranges from a mitigated term of one year up to an aggravated term of 3.75 years in prison, with a presumptive sentence of 2.5 years.16Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes 13-702 – First Time Felony Offenders; Sentencing If the forged document is used in connection with renting a dwelling that serves as a drop house, the charge escalates to a class 3 felony with steeper penalties. Polycarbonate construction, laser engraving, UV elements, and encoded barcodes make forgery progressively harder with each design update, and the sentencing exposure is what turns difficult into not worth attempting.
