Personalized Plates and Specialty Plates Are Not the Same Thing
A personalized plate keeps the standard Arizona plate design and swaps the randomly assigned registration number for letters, numbers, or a mix you choose. A specialty plate has a completely different background. What They Cost
A.R.S. § 28-2402 sets the fee at $25 for the original special plate and $25 for each annual renewal, on top of regular registration.5Arizona Legislature. For specialty organization plates, the $25 annual fee splits into two pieces: $8 covers administrative costs and $17 is treated as a donation to the sponsoring organization.4Arizona Legislature. How to Apply
The fastest route is the AZ MVD Now portal at azmvdnow.gov. If you prefer paper, use the Special Plate Application, Form 96-0143. What MVD Will Reject
Every application requires a written explanation of what your character combination means. That is how MVD screens for hidden messages. Under A.R.S. § 28-2406, the department can refuse, suspend, cancel, or revoke any combination it finds offensive to good taste and decency, or any it considers misleading.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Administrative Code R17-4-310 lays out the flagged categories. Prohibited formats include references to sexual content, drug use or paraphernalia, and combinations expressing contempt, ridicule, or claimed superiority toward any defined group. MVD also rejects “evasive formats,” where letters and numbers are arranged to look like each other on the physical plate and make the registration harder to read. If your application is rejected, you’ll need to submit a new combination.
How Long Delivery Takes
Once your application is approved and paid, the plates are manufactured and mailed to your registered address. Transferring Plates to Another Vehicle
When you sell, trade, or give away the vehicle your special plates are on, A.R.S. § 28-2403 gives you two obligations: report the transfer to MVD immediately, or surrender the plates. Watch this deadline. If a full year passes after your vehicle’s registration expires, or after you get a refund, without transferring your personalized plate to another vehicle, MVD cancels the character combination. Your sequence goes back into the pool and anyone can claim it. Replacing Damaged or Lost Plates
If your custom plates are damaged, deteriorated, or unreadable, MVD will replace them with the same characters for a $5 fee plus postage and handling. Lost or stolen plates work differently. Because the originals could still be in circulation, MVD issues replacements with new numbers and letters rather than duplicating the old ones.
