If your Arizona permit expired, you have to start the application from the beginning and retake the written knowledge test. Arizona’s Motor Vehicle Division doesn’t renew or extend instruction permits once the 12-month validity period runs out. You pay the permit fee again, submit the same documents you provided the first time, and pass the written exam before you can practice driving legally or schedule a road test.
Why There’s No Renewal Option
An Arizona instruction permit is valid for 12 months from the date it’s issued, and that’s the entire window.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 28-3154 – Instruction Permit for a Class D or G License Once it closes, the permit is no longer valid for driving practice and the MVD treats you as a new applicant. There is no grace period, no extension, and no shortcut back in.
You also can’t take the road skills test with an expired permit. The MVD requires a valid instruction permit before scheduling the road exam.2Arizona Department of Transportation. Road Tests If yours lapsed before you got there, a fresh permit comes first.
Retaking the Written Knowledge Test
The written test covers Arizona traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. How you take it depends on your age.
If you’re under 18, Arizona’s Permit Test @ Home program lets a parent or legal guardian administer the test from home through their AZ MVD Now account.3Arizona Department of Transportation. If you’re 18 or older, you take the written test at an MVD office or an authorized third-party provider. Appointments are booked through AZMVDNow.gov, and many locations also accept walk-ins.5Arizona Department of Transportation. MVD Office Appointments Available
The vision screening isn’t a separate step you repeat. It happens as part of the new application.
Documents and Fee
Reapplying means bringing the same identification you provided originally. Arizona requires proof in three categories:6Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. Arizona DL/ID Requirements
- Proof of legal presence, such as an original or certified U.S. birth certificate, an unexpired U.S. passport, or another approved document showing authorized presence.
- Your Social Security number, provided on the application form.
- Two proofs of Arizona residency, each showing your name and physical residential address and issued by a business, organization, or government agency.
Applicants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian present during the application, or a notarized signature on the application form if the parent can’t attend. The signing parent assumes liability for any negligence or willful misconduct by the minor driver.
The fee for a non-travel instruction permit is $7, and you pay it in full again when your previous permit has expired.7Arizona Department of Transportation. Fees – Driver License The written test itself has no separate charge.
What an Expired Permit Costs Drivers Under 18
Expiration is more expensive for teens because Arizona’s graduated licensing rules attach a holding period to the permit. Before you can take the road test, you must hold a valid instruction permit for at least six months.8Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 28-3174 – Class G Driver Licenses Restrictions Civil Penalties When you get a new permit, that six-month clock starts fresh from the new issue date.

- Completion of an ADOT-approved driver education program, which satisfies the requirement on its own.
- A certified defensive driving school program plus at least 20 hours of supervised practice, with at least 6 hours at night, certified by a parent or guardian.
- At least 30 hours of supervised practice, with at least 10 hours at night, certified by a parent or guardian.
Practice hours are documented on a Driving Practice Certificate submitted to the MVD.9Arizona Department of Transportation. Driving Practice Certificate Hours already logged under an earlier permit still count. What resets is the six-month holding period, not the driving practice itself.
Timing Your Road Test
For drivers 18 and older, the road test requires either a valid instruction permit or proof of passing the written test.2Arizona Department of Transportation. Road test appointments are scheduled through AZMVDNow.gov.5Arizona Department of Transportation. If appointments are full and the permit lapses before a slot opens, the whole process restarts.
