Arkansas Amended Tax Return Status: ATAP Check, Timeline, Delays

To check your Arkansas amended tax return status, use the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point at atap.arkansas.gov and click the “Check Refund Status” link. You do not need to create a full account to use it. Just be ready to wait: amended returns are paper-reviewed by hand at the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), and 12 to 16 weeks of processing time is normal.

Checking Your Return on ATAP

The DFA’s tracking tool lives on the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point (ATAP) at atap.arkansas.gov.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Once you enter your information, the tool tells you whether the return has been received, is still being processed, or has been completed with a refund issued or balance due. If nothing comes up at all, your amended return probably hasn’t landed in the system yet. That’s common in the first several weeks after mailing.

What You Need Before You Log In

Pull out your copy of the amended return and have these three items ready:

  • Your Social Security Number. This is the primary identifier the DFA uses to find your record.
  • The tax year you amended, not the year you filed the correction.
  • The exact refund or payment amount shown on the amended return itself. Use the final figure on the corrected form, not the difference between your original and amended filings. Being off by even a dollar can prevent the system from pulling up your record.

How Long Amended Returns Take

An amended Arkansas return takes much longer than an original filing. An original electronic return might process in a few weeks; a paper-filed amended return routinely takes 12 to 16 weeks or longer. The DFA has to compare your original return line by line against the corrected one, verify every change, and recalculate your tax from scratch. That work is done manually.

Checking ATAP every few weeks is reasonable. Calling before 12 weeks have passed usually won’t produce any new information, because your return is likely still sitting in the queue.

Why Your Status May Be Stuck

If your return has been in “Processing” past the 16-week mark, one of a few things is probably going on:

  • Missing documentation. The DFA didn’t receive a corrected W-2, a federal audit report, or a schedule that should have been attached, and the review can’t move forward without it.
  • A math error. If the DFA’s system catches a calculation that doesn’t add up, the return gets pulled for closer manual review instead of moving through.
  • Identity verification. If the DFA can’t confirm you’re the actual filer, it sends a letter asking you to verify. Everything stops until you respond.
  • Audit selection. Large changes or unusual deductions can flag an amended return for a more thorough review.

In any of these situations, the DFA sends a letter to the address on your return. If you moved after filing, that letter may never reach you, and your return can sit in limbo indefinitely. Update your address with the DFA if there’s any chance mail isn’t getting to you.

When to Call the DFA

If ATAP isn’t telling you anything useful and you’ve passed 16 weeks with no letter, call the DFA’s Individual Income Tax line at 501-682-1100.3Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Income Tax Administration Have your Social Security Number, the tax year, and a copy of your amended return in front of you. A representative can tell you whether the DFA is waiting on documentation or whether the return is simply still in the manual review queue.

One boundary worth flagging: if you also filed a federal Form 1040-X, that’s tracked separately by the IRS through its own “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool and phone line. Progress on the federal side tells you nothing about the Arkansas side, and vice versa.4Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040-X

What Happens Once Processing Finishes

When the DFA finishes reviewing your amended return, one of two things happens.

You Get a Refund

The DFA issues your refund by direct deposit or paper check, whichever you selected on the form. If the refund takes longer than 90 days past the original filing deadline to reach you, the state owes you interest at 10% per year on the overpayment.5Code of Arkansas Rules. 26 CAR 30-1216 – Overpayments and Refunds, Interest on Overpayments and Refunds Refunds paid inside that 90-day window carry no interest.

You Owe More

The DFA sends a notice showing the balance and the payment deadline. Interest runs from the original due date of the return, not the date you filed the amendment. Arkansas also charges a failure-to-pay penalty of 1% of the unpaid tax for each month (or partial month) the balance stays outstanding, up to a 35% cap.6Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-18-208 – Additional Penalties and Tax If the DFA decides the underpayment came from negligence rather than an honest error, another 10% penalty stacks on top.

Because interest and penalties run from the original due date, filing the amendment quickly after you spot an error is what limits the damage. If you can’t pay the full balance when the notice arrives, call the DFA about payment arrangements rather than letting the notice sit.
