Arkansas License Plate Options: Specialty, Personalized, and Rules

Arkansas license plate options fall into four groups: the standard weight-based plate issued with every registration, personalized plates with characters you choose, specialty plates tied to a cause or affiliation (including military and disability plates), and temporary paper buyer’s tags for the gap between purchase and registration. Fees, eligibility, and application paths differ by group.

Standard Plates

The standard plate is the default. When you register a vehicle with the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), you’re assigned a plate number from a predetermined sequence, and the annual fee for a passenger car depends on vehicle weight:1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. • 3,000 pounds or less: $17
  • 3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25
  • 4,501 pounds and over: $30

New vehicle owners have 60 calendar days from the purchase date to title and register. Residents moving from another state get 60 days from the point of establishing residency.2Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Tag Renewal

Personalized Plates

A personalized plate uses the same colors and design as the standard plate but lets you choose the character combination. The personalization adds $25 per year on top of your standard registration fee.3Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1009 – Issuance of Special Personalized License Plate

You can apply online at mydmv.arkansas.gov or mail the request form to the DFA’s Personalized Plate Unit in Little Rock. Having the plate mailed to you runs $31.50; picking it up at the Little Rock office costs $26.50.4Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Passenger Car Personalized Plate Request Form

Your combination can run up to seven characters, including spaces. The DFA rejects combinations that collide with the regular numbering system or that it considers suggestive, offensive, or in poor taste, and no two vehicles can share a personalized plate.3Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1009 – Issuance of Special Personalized License Plate The form has room for several ranked choices, which is worth using because your first pick may already be taken.

One rule catches people off guard. If you decide not to renew a personalized plate, you have to surrender it to the DFA at renewal time. Letting it sit in a drawer isn’t an option; failing to turn it in is a misdemeanor.3Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1009 – Issuance of Special Personalized License Plate

Specialty Plates

Arkansas offers dozens of specialty plates covering interests and affiliations such as amateur radio, antique vehicles, collegiate institutions, and conservation causes. Fees vary by plate, and the extra charges often fund the organization or cause the plate represents. The DFA publishes the full catalog on its specialty plates page.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Specialty Plates and Placards

Military and Veteran Plates

Military plates have eligibility gates. You must document that you are a disabled veteran, a veteran of a foreign war, a recipient of a military honor, an ex-prisoner of war, or someone with past or present military service, and you must have either an honorable service record or an honorable discharge.6Justia. Arkansas Code 27-24-204 – Military and Veteran Special License Plates

Disability Plates and Placards

The DFA issues plates and parking placards for people with qualifying disabilities. A physician’s certification is required with the application, documenting the nature and duration of the disability. Applications go through the DFA’s specialty plates division.

Temporary Buyer’s Tags

Buying from a licensed dealer? You need a temporary paper buyer’s tag within five business days of the purchase date, unless you’re moving a plate over from a vehicle you already have registered.7Code of Arkansas Rules. 27 CAR 15-103 – Temporary Preprinted Paper Buyer’s Tag The dealer can issue it if equipped to do so; otherwise you get one from the DFA or an approved vendor. The tag costs no more than $1.

A temporary tag is valid until you register the vehicle or 30 days after purchase, whichever comes first. Place it on the inside of the rear window, or where the permanent plate would mount if the vehicle has no rear window. If a prior lienholder is slow to release the title, the dealer can issue one additional 30-day tag.

Display Rules That Apply to Every Plate

Arkansas is a two-plate state. Most motor vehicles have to display plates on both the front and rear. Motorcycles get one plate, mounted on the rear. Trucks rated at one-ton capacity or larger can display their single plate on either end.8Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-716 – Display of License Plates

Every plate must be mounted horizontally, kept at least 12 inches above the ground measured from the bottom edge, and kept clean enough to read. Covers that reduce legibility or cut the plate’s reflective properties are prohibited. The statute carves out exceptions for equipment that may incidentally block a plate, including trailer hitches, a trailer being towed, wheelchair carriers, and bicycle racks.8Justia. Penalties for Skipping Registration

Miss the 60-day registration window and the late penalty runs $3 for every 10 days overdue, capped at the amount of your annual registration fee ($17 to $30, depending on vehicle weight).9Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Driving an unregistered vehicle is a separate offense. A first conviction carries a mandatory minimum fine of $50 and up to $100. A second or subsequent offense raises the mandatory minimum to $100, with a maximum of $250. Two unregistered-vehicle convictions within a single year can trigger impoundment of the vehicle until you prove it’s registered, at your expense.10FindLaw.
