Arkansas License Plates: Types, Display, and Renewal

Arkansas license plates are issued by the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) through its Office of Motor Vehicle when you register a vehicle, and every car, truck, or motorcycle driven on state roads must carry one. New residents have 30 days after establishing residency to register. Buyers of cars, motorcycles, and commercial trucks generally have 60 calendar days from the purchase date; trailers, mobile homes, ATVs, and motorboats have 30.1Arkansas.gov. Getting a Plate

Before the DFA will issue a plate, three things need to be in order: an Arkansas title in your name, a current personal property tax assessment from your county assessor, and active liability insurance.

If you bought from a dealer, the dealer usually handles the title paperwork. If you bought privately, bring the signed title from the seller to a local revenue office. Arkansas requires personal property to be assessed between January 1 and May 31 each year, and the revenue office will check that your assessment is current and taxes are paid. Minimum liability coverage is $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.3Justia. You can complete registration in person at a revenue office or online through the state’s MyDMV portal once your title paperwork is on file.

Fees and Taxes

Registration fees for passenger cars and motor homes are based on vehicle weight:

  • 3,000 pounds or less: $17
  • 3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25
  • 4,501 pounds and over: $30

Half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks and vans pay $21, as do one-ton trucks used only for personal transportation. Motorcycle fees run from $3 to $7 depending on engine size. Every registration also includes a $2.50 validation decal fee, and the title itself costs $10.4Justia. Sales tax is collected at the same visit. For used vehicles priced under $4,000 no state tax is collected. Vehicles priced $4,000 to $9,999 are taxed at 3.5%, and vehicles $10,000 and up at 6.5%. Local taxes apply on top of the state rate and don’t follow the reduced tiers.6Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Recent Changes in the Law

Electric and hybrid owners pay an annual surcharge on top of the standard fee: $200 for a fully electric vehicle, $100 for a plug-in hybrid, and $50 for a standard hybrid. The money is split among the state highway fund and the county and municipal aid funds. Some special-plate categories are exempt.7Justia. Plate Types

Most drivers get the standard Arkansas plate when they register. Beyond that, several categories are available.

Personalized plates with a custom letter-and-number combination carry a $25 annual fee. The DFA reviews requests and rejects anything offensive or misleading.8Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Personalized License Plate Collegiate, cause-supporting, and organizational plates each have their own additional fees that vary by design.

Antique plates are available for vehicles 30 years old or older that are essentially unaltered from the manufacturer’s original specifications. Period-appropriate modifications and safety upgrades like seatbelts and sealed-beam headlights are allowed.9Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Antique Vehicle License Plate – Current

Commercial vehicles use plates based on gross vehicle weight rating. Motorcycles, trailers, and mobile homes each have their own designated plate types, and government vehicles carry exempt plates that don’t pay standard registration fees.

Temporary Buyer’s Tags

When you buy from a licensed dealer, you leave with a temporary preprinted paper buyer’s tag good until you register the vehicle or until 60 calendar days after the purchase date, whichever comes first. The fee is capped at $5.50.10Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1705 – Temporary Preprinted Paper Buyer’s Tags

If the dealer can’t issue temporary tags directly, you have 10 calendar days to get one from an approved vendor or the OMV. Until then, keep a copy of the bill of sale in the vehicle. If your registration timeline is extended for some reason, the dealer can issue one additional tag good for 30 more days.

How to Display a Plate

Arkansas issues a single plate that goes on the rear of the vehicle. When two plates are issued for a particular vehicle class, one goes on the front and one on the rear. Trucks rated at one-ton capacity or larger can display their plate on either end.11Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-716 – Display of License Plates Generally

The plate must be fastened securely in a horizontal position, at least 12 inches above the ground as measured from the bottom of the plate, and kept clean enough to read. Tinted covers, reflective sprays, and decorative frames that block any part of the plate are prohibited, along with anything else that alters its appearance. A white light has to illuminate the rear plate at night. A burned-out plate light is a common reason for a traffic stop.

Your current validation decal must be affixed to the plate. Displaying a fraudulent, altered, or expired decal can bring criminal charges beyond a basic traffic citation.

Annual Renewal

Registrations renew every year, and your expiration date is tied to your last name. The OMV sends a renewal notice ahead of time, and you can renew up to 90 days before your expiration date. There are three ways to do it: online through the state’s ARSTAR portal, in person at a revenue office, or by mail using the form included with your notice.12Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Your personal property tax assessment needs to be current and paid, and your liability insurance has to be active. The system checks insurance electronically, so a coverage gap can block the renewal even if everything else is in order.

Arkansas does not require safety or emissions inspections, so renewal is a paperwork and payment exercise. No shop visit, no inspection sticker.

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Plate

If a plate is lost, stolen, or too damaged to read, you need a replacement. Visit a revenue office or use the MyDMV portal with your current registration information and a government-issued ID. If the plate was stolen, file a police report first so you have a record if someone uses it fraudulently.

A replacement validation decal costs $2.50, and plate transfer fees are $1.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule Specialty and personalized plates can cost more to replace depending on the design. Put the new plate on right away, and if the old one turns up later, surrender it to the DFA.

Transferring a Plate When You Sell

In Arkansas the plate stays with the owner, not the vehicle. When you sell, the plate comes off and can be transferred to another eligible vehicle you own. The transfer fee is $1.5Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule

Bring the old vehicle’s registration, proof of ownership for the new vehicle, and the fee to a revenue office. Specialty and personalized plates may carry additional transfer charges. If you aren’t moving the plate to another vehicle, surrender it to the DFA. Either way, notify the DFA promptly after the sale so state records reflect the change and you aren’t carrying liability for a vehicle you no longer own.13Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Penalties

Fines escalate with repeat offenses. Driving an unregistered vehicle carries a mandatory minimum fine of $50 for a first offense, up to $100. A second or subsequent offense carries a mandatory minimum of $100 and a maximum of $250, on top of any other penalties the court imposes.14FindLaw.
