Arkansas SNAP Benefits: Eligibility, Amounts, and How to Apply

Arkansas SNAP benefits provide monthly grocery money for low-income households, loaded onto an EBT card that works like a debit card at authorized stores. For fiscal year 2026, a single person can receive up to $298 per month and a family of four up to $994.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information The program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and run in Arkansas by the Department of Human Services (DHS) through its Division of County Operations.2Arkansas Department of Human Services. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) Applications go through access.arkansas.gov, and most households receive a decision within 30 days.

Who Qualifies in Arkansas

SNAP uses two income tests. Gross monthly income (before deductions) generally cannot exceed 130 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, and net monthly income (after deductions) cannot exceed 100 percent.3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility A “household” means everyone who lives together and buys and prepares meals together.

The FY2026 income ceilings:4Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Income Eligibility Standards FY2026

  • 1 person: $1,696 gross / $1,305 net
  • 2 people: $2,292 gross / $1,763 net
  • 3 people: $2,888 gross / $2,221 net
  • 4 people: $3,483 gross / $2,680 net
  • 5 people: $4,079 gross / $3,138 net
  • 6 people: $4,675 gross / $3,596 net
  • 7 people: $5,271 gross / $4,055 net
  • 8 people: $5,867 gross / $4,513 net
  • Each additional person: +$596 gross / +$459 net

Households where every member already receives SSI or TANF are categorically eligible and do not need to pass the income tests separately.

Arkansas has waived the federal asset test using broad-based categorical eligibility. If your income qualifies, the state will not deny you based on your checking or savings balance alone.3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility A modest emergency fund will not disqualify an otherwise eligible household.

How Much You Will Receive

These are the maximum monthly benefits for FY2026 (October 2025 through September 2026):1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Information

  • 1 person: $298
  • 2 people: $546
  • 3 people: $785
  • 4 people: $994
  • 5 people: $1,183
  • 6 people: $1,421
  • 7 people: $1,571
  • 8 people: $1,789
  • Each additional person: +$218

Most households get less than the maximum. The formula subtracts 30 percent of your countable net income from the cap, so the lower your net income, the closer you get to the top figure. One- and two-person households whose calculation comes out below $23 still get a $23 minimum.

Deductions That Raise Your Benefit

Because the benefit depends on net income, every allowable deduction increases what you receive. Arkansas allows:5Arkansas Department of Human Services. SNAP Certification Manual – Section 6000 Deductions

  • A standard deduction based on household size, applied to every household.
  • An earned income deduction, taken as a percentage of gross wages.
  • Dependent care costs when the care lets a household member work, attend school, or do job training. No cap.
  • Legally obligated child support paid to someone outside the household.
  • Medical costs over $35 per month, for members age 60 or older or with a disability.
  • Excess shelter costs when rent or mortgage, taxes, insurance, and utilities exceed half your income after other deductions. There is no cap for households with an elderly or disabled member.

For the utility portion of shelter costs, Arkansas uses a Standard Utility Allowance rather than your actual bills.

Work Requirements for Adults Without Children

Since July 1, 2023, Arkansas has enforced time limits on able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs).6Arkansas Department of Human Services. SNAP Requirement to Work and Time Limit Rules You fall into this group if you are 18 to 64, do not have a child under 14 in your home, and are physically and mentally able to work.

ABAWDs can only receive SNAP for three months in any three-year period unless they log at least 80 hours per month in one or more of these activities:

  • Paid employment
  • Volunteering
  • SNAP Employment and Training (E&T)
  • Another approved employment and training program

Pregnancy, caring for a young child, being unfit to work, and meeting work requirements through another program all qualify as exemptions. If your benefits stop under the time limit, working or volunteering 80 hours in any later month restores eligibility.

College Students

Students enrolled at least half-time in higher education are generally ineligible unless they meet an exemption. The common qualifying categories:7Food and Nutrition Service. Students

  • Working at least 20 hours per week for pay
  • Participating in federal or state work-study
  • Caring for a child under 6
  • Being a single parent enrolled full-time with a child under 12
  • Receiving TANF
  • Being placed in college through SNAP E&T, a WIOA program, or Trade Adjustment Assistance
  • Having a condition that prevents working

Students under 18 or 50 and older are not subject to these rules at all. Financial aid, including Pell Grants, scholarships, and student loans, does not count as income for the SNAP calculation.

How to Apply

Apply online at access.arkansas.gov, where you can create an account, complete the application, and upload documents.8Arkansas Department of Human Services. Apply For Services Paper applications can be mailed or delivered to your local DHS county office.

Have these ready:

  • Social Security numbers for everyone applying
  • Proof of identity for the head of household
  • Proof of Arkansas residency (lease, utility bill, or mortgage statement)
  • Income records for the past 30 days (pay stubs, benefit letters, unemployment paperwork)

File quickly even if your documents are incomplete. The date DHS receives a signed application with your name and address starts the processing clock, and you can submit missing items afterward.

Processing Time and Expedited Benefits

DHS has 30 calendar days to process a standard application and issue benefits.9Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Application Processing Timeliness Within that window, a caseworker will interview you, usually by phone, to verify income and household details. A written notice follows with the decision and benefit amount.

Households in financial crisis qualify for expedited service, which puts benefits on your EBT card within seven calendar days.10eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 – Office Operations and Application Processing You qualify if:

  • Your gross monthly income is under $150 and you have $100 or less in cash or bank accounts, or
  • Your monthly income plus liquid resources are less than your rent or mortgage plus utilities, or
  • You are a migrant or seasonal farmworker with little or no income or resources.

DHS is required to screen every application, but flagging it yourself helps avoid a missed call.

When Benefits Load Each Month

Arkansas spreads SNAP deposits across eight days, from the 4th through the 13th, based on the last digit of the head of household’s Social Security number:11Food and Nutrition Service. Monthly Issuance Schedule for All States and Territories

  • Ends in 0 or 1: 4th
  • Ends in 2 or 3: 5th
  • Ends in 4: 8th
  • Ends in 5: 9th
  • Ends in 6: 10th
  • Ends in 7: 11th
  • Ends in 8: 12th
  • Ends in 9: 13th

Unused benefits roll over from month to month.

What SNAP Pays For

SNAP covers food meant for home preparation: produce, meat, dairy, bread, cereal, and similar groceries. Seeds and plants that grow food for your household also qualify.12Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy

It does not cover:

  • Alcohol, tobacco, or cigarettes
  • Vitamins, medicines, or anything labeled “Supplement Facts”
  • Hot foods sold ready to eat
  • Non-food items like cleaning supplies, paper products, pet food, diapers, and hygiene products

Keeping Your Benefits

SNAP households are certified for a set period, usually between one and 36 months depending on how stable your income and circumstances are.13Arkansas Department of Human Services. SNAP Certification Manual – Section 8000 Before the period ends, DHS sends a recertification packet. Complete it, return it, and attend the follow-up interview. If you miss the deadline, benefits stop at the end of your last certified month, and anything submitted more than 30 days later is treated as a brand-new application.

Report significant changes between recertifications: a notable rise in income, or someone moving into or out of your household. Unreported changes can create an overpayment that you will have to repay.

If You Are Denied or Cut Off

Every denial, reduction, or termination comes with a written notice explaining why. You have 90 calendar days from the date on that letter to request a fair hearing.14Arkansas Department of Human Services. File an Appeal Miss that deadline and you lose the right to challenge the decision.

If your case is being closed and you file the hearing request before the closure takes effect, your benefits may continue at the current level while the appeal is pending. Act quickly: waiting until benefits have already stopped means you will go without them during the appeal. An impartial hearing officer reviews the evidence and issues a written decision.
