Arkansas Vehicle Sales Tax Calculator: Rates, Trade-Ins, and the 60-Day Deadline

Arkansas vehicle sales tax is 6.5% of the purchase price at the state level, plus a local city and county rate based on where you keep the vehicle. Used cars priced between $4,000 and $9,999 get a reduced state rate of 2.875%, and vehicles under $4,000 owe no state sales tax at all. A trade-in or a qualifying private sale of your old vehicle lowers the amount the tax is calculated on.

State Rate Tiers by Price and Condition

Arkansas doesn’t apply one flat rate to every vehicle. The state tax depends on whether the vehicle is new or used and what it costs.1Justia. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Tax on New and Used Motor Vehicles, Trailers, or Semitrailers – Payment and Collection

The tier is set by the full purchase price, not by what you pay after a trade-in credit. A used car with an $8,000 sticker stays in the 2.875% tier even if a trade reduces the net taxable amount to $3,000.

How Trade-Ins and Private Sales Reduce the Tax

If you trade a vehicle in at the dealer, you only pay sales tax on the difference between the new vehicle’s price and the trade allowance. Buy a $30,000 truck, trade a car worth $8,000, and the taxable amount is $22,000.3Justia. Arkansas Code 26-52-510 – Direct Payment of Tax by Consumer-User – New and Used Motor Vehicles, Trailers, or Semitrailers – Definition

A private sale can give you the same kind of credit, but two conditions apply. You have to sell the old vehicle first and buy the replacement within 60 days of that sale, and the replacement must be worth more than what you sold. Bring the bill of sale from the private transaction to the Revenue Office when you register the new vehicle, and the credit comes off the taxable amount.

Manufacturer cash rebates generally don’t reduce the taxable price. A $25,000 car with a $2,000 rebate is still taxed on $25,000.

Local City and County Tax

On top of the state rate, you owe a local sales tax set by your county and city. Rates vary across Arkansas and are based on where the vehicle will be kept, not where you bought it.4Legal Information Institute. 006.05.08 Ark. Code R. 12 – Sale of Motor Vehicles, Trailers, and Semitrailers The Department of Finance and Administration runs an online address lookup for exact combined local rates.5Department of Finance and Administration. Local tax applies to the same taxable amount as the state tax. If a trade-in brings the taxable figure down to $22,000, both rates run against $22,000.

Buying a Vehicle Out of State

Arkansas does not credit sales tax you paid to another state on a motor vehicle. When you register a vehicle you bought elsewhere, you owe the full Arkansas state and local tax at registration.6Department of Finance and Administration. Title, Registration, and Annual Fees

Several flat fees are collected along with the sales tax at the Revenue Office.

The title fee is a one-time $10.00 charge paid when you first put the vehicle in your name.7Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule

Annual passenger-vehicle registration runs by unladen weight: $17.00 for 3,000 pounds or less, $25.00 for 3,001 to 4,500 pounds, and $30.00 for 4,501 pounds and over.8Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-601 – Fees for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicles – Definitions A $2.50 validation decal fee is added each year.

Electric and hybrid owners pay an annual surcharge on top of the standard registration fee: $200 for a battery electric vehicle, $100 for a plug-in hybrid, and $50 for a standard hybrid.9Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-614 – Additional Fee for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

The 60-Day Deadline and Late Penalties

You have 60 days from the purchase date, or from the date any prior lien is released, to register the vehicle. After that window, it cannot legally be driven on public roads without a valid plate.10Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-903 – Registration by Transferee – Title Retention Notes – Definition Motorboats get only 30 days.

Missing the deadline costs you twice. The registration late fee is $3.00 for every ten days past the deadline, running up to the amount of the annual registration fee itself. Separately, the sales tax carries a 5% penalty for each month it goes unpaid, capped at 35% of the tax due.

Arkansas also ties registration to personal property taxes. Before the Revenue Office can register the vehicle, your county records must show the vehicle assessed and no delinquent personal property tax on your account.11Justia. Arkansas Code 27-14-1015 – Payment of Personal Property Taxes New Arkansas residents and anyone with a lapsed account should clear that balance before heading to register.

What to Bring to the Revenue Office

You pay the sales tax and all fees in one visit at the Revenue Office, and you walk out with your registration and title. Bring:

  • Title and Registration Application (Form 10-381), available at the office or on the DFA website.12Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Registration Application
  • The original bill of sale showing the purchase price and any trade-in allowance.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • Your personal property account number (the system checks clearance electronically, but having the number speeds things up).
  • The private-sale bill of sale, if you’re claiming the 60-day private-sale credit.

A Worked Example

Say you buy a new $28,000 SUV in a jurisdiction with a 2.5% combined local rate, and you trade in a vehicle worth $6,000. The SUV weighs over 4,500 pounds.

  • Taxable amount: $28,000 − $6,000 = $22,000
  • State tax at 6.5%: $1,430
  • Local tax at 2.5%: $550
  • Title fee: $10.00
  • Registration fee: $30.00
  • Validation decal: $2.50
  • Total due at the Revenue Office: $2,022.50

For a used $7,000 sedan with no trade-in at the same 2.5% local rate, the math shifts because of the reduced used-vehicle tier. State tax is $7,000 × 2.875% = $201.25, local tax is $7,000 × 2.5% = $175, and sales tax before fees comes to $376.25. The 2.875% rate on used vehicles in the $4,000 to $9,999 band is the single biggest break in the Arkansas structure, and it’s worth confirming the price falls inside that window before you sign.
