Atlanta false alarm fines start at $0. The city gives you two warnings before any money is owed, then charges $50 for the third false alarm in a rolling 365-day period, $100 for the fourth, $200 for the fifth and sixth, and $500 for the seventh and every one after that.1CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Ordinance 17-O-1581 The same schedule applies whether police or Atlanta Fire Rescue made the run, and a false alarm is any activation not caused by an actual break-in, robbery, or fire.2Atlanta, GA Code of Ordinances. The Current Fine Schedule
The Atlanta City Council eliminated fines for the first two false alarms and reduced later penalties when it amended the ordinance.3Atlanta City Council. Atlanta City Council Reduces Penalties for False Burglar Alarm Activations The tiers run on a rolling 365-day window, meaning the clock starts on the date of your first false alarm and resets 365 days later for that incident, not on January 1.1CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Ordinance 17-O-1581
- First false alarm: warning, no fine.
- Second false alarm: warning, no fine.
- Third false alarm: $50, waived if you attend an alarm user awareness class.
- Fourth false alarm: $100.
- Fifth and sixth: $200 each.
- Seventh and beyond: $500 each.
Three false alarms spread over fourteen months would never share a 365-day window, so each one would start its own count rather than stacking toward the $50 tier.
The $150 Charge for Operating Without a Permit
If officers or fire crews respond to your address and you don’t have a current alarm permit, the city adds a flat $150 fine for the response itself, regardless of whether the alarm turned out to be real.4ATL311. Register an Alarm System That charge is separate from the false alarm schedule above, so an unregistered property that triggers a false alarm pays both. A lapsed permit works the same way: continuing to operate the alarm after the annual expiration date triggers a $50 civil penalty, and letting the permit expire exposes you to the $150 response charge too.1CryWolf Services. Registration is free through the CryWolf portal at crywolfservices.com/atlantaga or by calling 1-855-725-7102, and the permit must be renewed each year on its anniversary date.5Atlanta Police Department. Atlanta Alarm Ordinance – Permit Renewal Requirements You’ll need the property address, your contact information, the monitoring company’s name and Georgia license number, and at least two emergency contacts who can reach the property. The permit is tied to the address, not the person, so a new tenant or owner needs their own permit even if the previous occupant had one.
Late Payment and the Cap
Fines are due within 30 days of the notice date. Pay late and the city tacks on a 50 percent late fee, which turns a $200 fine into $300. The combined penalty and late fee are capped at $1,000 per citation.1CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Ordinance 17-O-1581
Ignoring the citation is worse than paying late. The city solicitor mails citations by first-class mail, and if you don’t respond or appear on the return date, you waive your right to contest the violation entirely.7Atlanta, GA Code of Ordinances. How to Dispute a Citation
You have 14 days from the date printed on the citation to file a dispute.8CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Program – Dispute Page Disputes aren’t just an administrative review; they go through Atlanta Municipal Court, and skipping the hearing means the citation is automatically upheld and sent to collections.
File by email to falsealarm@atlantaga.gov, by mail to 150 Garnett Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30303, or in person at the Municipal Court. Each citation needs its own form, and each form must include a copy of the citation, your name, the alarm location, the date of the false alarm, your permit number, and a written explanation of why the citation was issued in error. Attach supporting evidence where you have it: a technician’s work order documenting an equipment malfunction, records of a storm or power event, or anything else that backs the explanation.8CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Program – Dispute Page When you get a hearing date, show up with copies of everything you sent.
Keeping the Count Down
Most false alarms trace back to a few causes: someone fumbling the disarm code on the way in, pets triggering motion sensors, loose doors or windows that rattle enough to break a contact, and low batteries or failing sensors in older systems. Make sure everyone in the household knows the code and the cancellation procedure with your monitoring company. Ask your installer about pet-immune motion detectors if that’s the pattern. Replace sensor batteries before they fail.
The alarm user awareness class covers these fixes and waives the $50 third-offense fine on its own. It’s worth attending before you reach that tier, since preventing the fourth alarm saves $100 and the fifth saves another $200.1CryWolf Services. Atlanta False Alarm Reduction Ordinance 17-O-1581
