How the Combined Rate Works

Every taxable purchase in Baldwin County carries three layers of tax: state, county, and (if you’re inside city limits) municipal. Buy in an unincorporated part of the county and you pay 7% total, because no city rate applies. Cross into a city and the rate rises. The tax on your receipt depends on the exact location of the register, not just the county.

Reduced Rates for Vehicles, Farm Equipment, and Manufacturing Machinery

Three categories get lower rates at both the state and county level:

These reduced rates apply regardless of which city the dealer or supplier is in, though the city portion still varies. Classification matters on big-ticket items: a farm tractor coded as general merchandise instead of farm equipment costs the buyer noticeably more.

Grocery Rate

Alabama’s state tax on food and groceries dropped to 2% on September 1, 2025, down from the 4% general rate.6Alabama Department of Revenue. In Daphne, groceries run 7.5% instead of 9.5%.

What’s Exempt

Some purchases carry no sales tax at any level:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Gasoline and motor oil (separate motor fuel excise taxes apply at the pump)
  • Fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides, and seeds when used for farming
  • Livestock and poultry feed (prepared dog and cat food does not qualify)
  • Sales to federal, state, and local government entities

Businesses buying inventory for resale can purchase tax-free by giving the seller a valid Alabama certificate of exemption, which must be renewed annually. Buying From Out of State

If you buy from an out-of-state seller who doesn’t collect Alabama tax, you owe use tax at the same rates that would apply locally. Many online purchases arrive with tax already collected. Out-of-state sellers shipping more than $250,000 in retail goods into Alabama per year must register and collect, and most do so through the state’s Simplified Sellers Use Tax program at a flat 8%.9Alabama Department of Revenue. Filing Deadlines for Sellers

Sales tax returns and payment are due by the 20th of the month for the prior month’s sales. Smaller businesses can file less often:

Requests to change filing frequency must be submitted before February 20th of the year you want the new schedule to take effect. Seasonal businesses that collect tax fewer than three times a year can qualify for occasional-filing status through Baldwin County.

The On-Time Filing Discount

Alabama gives sellers who file and pay on time a discount on state sales tax: 5% of the first $100 due, plus 2% of everything above $100, capped at $400 per month across all locations.12Alabama Department of Revenue. Late Filing Penalty
