The sales tax rate in Batavia, Illinois is 8.00% on general merchandise through June 30, 2026, and rises to 8.50% on July 1, 2026, when the city’s home rule tax increases.1Illinois Department of Revenue. FY 2026-26-A, Sales Tax Rate Change Summary, Effective July 1, 2026 That rate covers most of what you buy at the register: clothing, electronics, household goods, restaurant meals. Groceries, medicine, and vehicles follow their own rules.
What Makes Up the 8.00%
Three taxes stack to reach the current total:2City of Batavia. Sales and Local Taxes/Fees
- Illinois state tax: 6.25%3Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 120/2-10 – Rate of Tax
- Regional Transportation Authority tax: 0.75%
- Batavia home rule municipal tax: 1.00%
Batavia sits in both Kane and DuPage counties, but neither county adds its own general merchandise sales tax. The rate is 8.00% whether a store is on the Kane side or the DuPage side of town.
The Increase to 8.50% on July 1, 2026
On July 1, 2026, Batavia’s home rule tax goes from 1.00% to 1.50%, pushing the combined general merchandise rate to 8.50% citywide.1Illinois Department of Revenue. FY 2026-26-A, Sales Tax Rate Change Summary, Effective July 1, 2026 The state’s 6.25% and the RTA’s 0.75% don’t change. The new stack:
- State: 6.25%
- RTA: 0.75%
- Batavia home rule: 1.50%
- Total: 8.50%
Shoppers will see the new rate at checkout starting with purchases on July 1.
Groceries and Medicine
Qualifying food and drugs are taxed at 1.75% in Batavia, far below the general rate.2City of Batavia. Sales and Local Taxes/Fees The underlying math changed in January 2026 even though the number at the register didn’t move.
Illinois eliminated its 1% state grocery tax on January 1, 2026, and allowed municipalities to adopt a 1% local grocery tax by ordinance.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Illinois Grocery Tax Changes Batavia adopted it, so groceries still ring up at 1.75% in the city: 1.00% local grocery tax plus 0.75% RTA.
Prescription drugs, nonprescription medicines, insulin, diabetic testing supplies, and medical appliances are taxed at the state’s 1% medical rate.3Illinois General Assembly. 35 ILCS 120/2-10 – Rate of Tax With the RTA added on, those items also come out to 1.75%.
Plenty of items at a grocery store don’t get the reduced rate. Prepared food meant for immediate consumption, soft drinks, candy, and alcohol are all taxed at the full general merchandise rate.4Illinois Department of Revenue. Illinois Grocery Tax Changes A rotisserie chicken from the deli and a six-pack of soda ring up at 8.00% (8.50% after July 1), not 1.75%.
Vehicles, Trailers, and Boats
Titled items work differently from a counter purchase. Illinois taxes vehicles, trailers, and watercraft at the rate of the buyer’s home address, not the seller’s. A Batavia resident buying a car at a dealership in Aurora or Naperville pays the Batavia rate. Someone from another town buying at a Batavia dealership pays their own town’s rate.
If you buy a vehicle from an out-of-state dealer and bring it into Illinois, you have 30 days to file Form RUT-25 and pay the tax. The Secretary of State won’t issue a title or registration until the tax (or an exemption) is on file.5Illinois Department of Revenue. Vehicle Use Tax Transaction Return Instructions For private-party vehicle purchases, Form RUT-50 is used instead.
Business District Surcharges
A handful of commercial areas inside Batavia carry an additional tax on top of the base rate. In a designated Business District, the city has authorized an extra levy to fund improvements like parking, lighting, or streetscaping within the district itself. The surcharge usually runs 0.50% to 1.00%, so a store inside a district might charge 8.50% or 9.00% while a store a few blocks away charges 8.00%. Each of those numbers goes up by another 0.50% after July 1, 2026.
District boundaries are set by city ordinance and cover specific parcels, not the whole city. Rates can shift from year to year as districts are created, modified, or expire, so the Illinois Department of Revenue publishes rate change bulletins when they do.1Illinois Department of Revenue. Online and Out-of-State Purchases
If you buy something from an out-of-state retailer that doesn’t collect Illinois tax at checkout, you still owe the equivalent amount as use tax, at the same rate you’d have paid locally. Most large online sellers already collect it, but smaller sellers and private sales sometimes don’t.
When your total use tax for the year is $600 or less, you can report it on your Illinois individual income tax return (Form IL-1040) or file a separate Form ST-44 by April 15 of the following year. Above $600, you have to file Form ST-44 and pay by the last day of the month after the purchase.7Illinois Department of Revenue. Form ST-44 Illinois Use Tax Return Instructions
