BCBA Certification in Arizona: Licensing, Experience, and Renewal

To practice as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in Arizona, you need two credentials, not one: the national BCBA certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and a separate state license from the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091 – Definitions Earning BCBA certification in Arizona runs over $780 in fees before you see a client, and the full timeline from first application to active state license typically takes two to six months, depending on how clean your paperwork is when it arrives.

Get the National BCBA Certification First

Arizona will not evaluate your state application until you hold a current national BCBA credential. The statute points to “a nationally recognized behavior analyst certification board,” and the state Board treats the BACB as that body.2Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.08 – Exemptions From Licensure So the national credential comes first, every time.

The BACB offers four pathways to certification, and all of them require a master’s degree or higher, behavior-analytic coursework, supervised fieldwork, and a passing score on the BCBA exam.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook Most candidates qualify through Pathway 1 (graduating from an accredited behavior analysis program) or Pathway 2 (completing the coursework alongside a qualifying graduate degree).

Fieldwork comes in two formats. The standard track calls for 2,000 supervised hours with supervision covering 5% of that time. The concentrated track shortens the requirement to 1,500 hours but doubles the supervision to 10%. Either way, you log at least 20 and no more than 130 hours per calendar month, finish within five continuous years, keep at least 60% of your activities in the unrestricted category, and make sure at least half of your supervision happens individually rather than in groups.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. On fees, the BACB charges $245 for the initial application and $125 to schedule the exam once you’re approved. That’s $370 before Arizona enters the picture. Incomplete documentation is the most common reason BACB applications stall.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The Life Cycle of BCBA and BCaBA Applications

Who the State Board Will License

Beyond the national credential, Arizona has its own eligibility bar. You must be at least 21 years old, show good moral character, and be physically and mentally capable of practicing safely. If any professional license of yours has been refused, revoked, or suspended anywhere for conduct reasons, you have to show the Board that the issue has been corrected and resolved.5Board of Psychologist Examiners. Arizona Code 32-2091.02 – Qualifications of Applicant

A pending complaint or investigation at any regulatory body freezes your Arizona application in place. The Board will neither issue nor deny the license while that matter is open, and voluntarily surrendering a license elsewhere during an investigation counts the same as a revocation.5Board of Psychologist Examiners. Arizona Code 32-2091.02 – Qualifications of Applicant Disclose everything. Failing to report adverse history can mean denial now or revocation later.

Arizona’s Education and Supervised Experience Rules

The state’s education standards don’t perfectly match the BACB’s. Arizona requires a graduate degree from an accredited institution, at least 225 classroom hours of graduate-level behavior analysis instruction, and a minimum of 1,500 hours of supervised work experience or fieldwork.6Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.03 – Educational and Training Standards for Licensure

Supervision is where the two systems diverge in a way that trips people up. Arizona wants supervision at least every two weeks, covering at least 5% of total fieldwork hours, with no fewer than 75 total supervision hours. Your fieldwork also cannot exceed 30 hours per week.6Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.03 – Educational and Training Standards for Licensure The BACB’s standard-versus-concentrated distinction doesn’t drive Arizona’s math; the state simply measures your actual hours against its own threshold. If your BACB fieldwork ran under the standard 2,000-hour track at 5% supervision, you should land safely above Arizona’s floor, but check the numbers in your documentation before you file.

The experience itself has to be behavior-analytic. That means conducting assessments, designing and monitoring programs, and supervising implementation. General staff meetings and non-behavioral interventions don’t count toward the hours.6Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.03 – Educational and Training Standards for Licensure

What to Gather Before You Apply

The application is submitted online, but most of what makes or breaks it comes from third parties. Start lining up these pieces well ahead of your target submission date.

  • A $350 non-refundable application fee, paid by credit or debit card as the last step of online submission.7Board of Psychologist Examiners. Behavior Analyst Application for Licensure
  • An Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card, or at minimum proof you have applied for one. The DPS processing fee is $67.8Arizona Department of Public Safety. Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • A completed Statement of Citizenship or Alien Status Form. U.S. citizens fill out Sections I, II, and IV; citizens of other countries complete all four.7Board of Psychologist Examiners. Behavior Analyst Application for Licensure
  • A color photo or PDF of a current government-issued ID meeting the Board’s evidence list.
  • Official graduate transcripts, sent directly from your institution to BASubmissions@psychboard.az.gov.
  • Supervised experience verification emailed directly from your supervisor to the Board. Documents the applicant forwards do not count.7Board of Psychologist Examiners. Behavior Analyst Application for Licensure

Third-party verification is strict. Transcripts you upload yourself get rejected. Supervisor forms your supervisor hands you to send on get rejected. Those documents have to travel directly from the source to the Board’s intake address.

Submitting the Application

Applications go through the Board’s Applicant Portal from a desktop or laptop. The Board does not accept applications submitted on mobile devices or through third parties.7Board of Psychologist Examiners. Behavior Analyst Application for Licensure The documents in your own possession (ID, Fingerprint Clearance Card, citizenship form) get uploaded through the portal. The $350 fee is the final step.

Clean, accurate applications can clear the Committee on Behavior Analysts and the full Board in one to two months. Applications with gaps or errors routinely take five to six months or more, because staff has to flag deficiencies, wait for corrections, and re-review.9Board of Psychologist Examiners. Behavior Analyst Application Process The fastest thing you can do is confirm with the Board that every third-party document has actually arrived before you hit submit.

Already Licensed in Another State

If you hold a behavior analyst license elsewhere, Arizona offers a shorter path under its universal recognition statute (A.R.S. § 32-4302). You need at least one year licensed or certified at an equivalent practice level in another U.S. state or territory, good standing in every jurisdiction you’ve ever been licensed in, Arizona residency, and current BACB certification. The fee is the same $350.10Board of Psychologist Examiners. BA Application for Licensure by Universal Recognition

One exception worth flagging: Pennsylvania’s “behavior specialist” license is not treated as equivalent, so Pennsylvania licensees cannot use this pathway.10Board of Psychologist Examiners. BA Application for Licensure by Universal Recognition A separate reciprocity provision (A.R.S. § 32-2091.04) also allows the Board to license someone certified by another state with substantially equivalent requirements, though universal recognition is the more common route.11Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.04 – Reciprocity

Keeping the License Active

Arizona behavior analyst licenses expire on the last day of your birth month every two years. Odd-numbered licenses renew in odd years, even-numbered licenses in even years.12Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.07 – Active License; Issuance; Renewal; Expiration; Continuing Education The biennial renewal fee is $500.13Board of Psychologist Examiners. Fees

Miss the deadline and you get a two-month grace period to reinstate with a reinstatement fee. After that, reinstatement is still possible up to one year from expiration, but you’ll have to prove continued competency through CE, an exam, or a Board interview. Past one year, you reapply from scratch.12Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.07 – Active License; Issuance; Renewal; Expiration; Continuing Education

Each two-year cycle requires 30 hours of continuing education, including at least 4 hours in ethics. Extra hours do not carry forward, and you must keep CE documentation for two full licensing periods in case of audit.14Board of Psychologist Examiners. Continuing Education for Behavior Analysts At renewal, you also have to disclose any disciplinary action by another state board, sanctions from a behavior analysis ethics committee, or restrictions placed on you by a health care institution, including the name of the body, what happened, and a summary of the underlying charges.12Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.07 – Active License; Issuance; Renewal; Expiration; Continuing Education Keep your mailing and email address current with the Board, since that’s where the renewal notice goes.

When You Don’t Need This License

Not every behavior-analytic activity in Arizona requires the state license. Graduate students and trainees working within a defined program of study are exempt as long as supervision meets nationally recognized standards. A behavior analyst licensed in another state can also practice in Arizona for up to 20 days per year without an Arizona license, provided the work is within their normal scope and they tell clients they aren’t licensed here.2Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 32-2091.08 – Exemptions From Licensure Cross that 20-day line and you need the full license or the universal recognition route.
