To earn BCBA certification in Florida, you need a qualifying master’s degree, behavior-analytic coursework, 1,500 or 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, a passing score on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) exam, and a separate state license from the Florida Department of Health that includes fingerprint-based background screening. Plan on two to three years beyond your bachelor’s degree to finish everything.
Degree and Coursework
Every candidate needs a master’s degree or higher. The BACB currently recognizes four pathways to eligibility, but two of them account for almost everyone applying.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook
- Pathway 1 is a master’s or doctoral degree from a program accredited or recognized by the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA) or the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) at Tier 1, 2a, or 2b. The behavior-analytic coursework is built into the degree.
- Pathway 2 is a master’s degree in any field from a qualifying institution plus separate behavior-analytic coursework covering the BACB’s required content areas. That coursework must have been completed within 10 years of your application.
Pathway 3 (behavior-analysis faculty with three years of full-time teaching and research) and Pathway 4 (doctoral degree with postdoctoral ABA experience, requiring only 500 fieldwork hours) remain available but are narrow and are being eliminated in 2027.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. One procedural note on Pathway 2: the old Verified Course Sequence system ended on January 1, 2026. Your coursework is now confirmed through the BACB’s Pathway 2 Coursework Attestation System, in which a full-time faculty member at your program who holds an active BCBA submits an attestation that you completed the required content areas. If your program has no approved Pathway 2 Program Contact, you can’t use Pathway 2 from that school, even if it had a VCS coordinator previously.2Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Supervised Fieldwork
You accumulate supervised fieldwork on one of two tracks:1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook
- Supervised Fieldwork: 2,000 hours total, with supervision equal to at least 5% of your hours each supervisory period.
- Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork: 1,500 hours total, with supervision equal to at least 10% of your hours each supervisory period.
A supervisory period is one calendar month, and you must log between 20 and 130 fieldwork hours per month. At least 60% of your hours have to be unrestricted activities such as assessments, treatment planning, and data analysis. At least half of your supervision must be individual rather than group. Your supervisor must be an active BCBA with no disciplinary sanctions, and if certified less than a year, they must receive monthly consultation from a more experienced BCBA.
Fieldwork Paperwork You Can’t Fix Later
You and your supervisor must each complete a Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form for every supervisory period and both sign it by the last day of the calendar month following the month of supervision. Miss that deadline and those hours are gone. Incomplete forms wipe out that month’s hours entirely. You don’t submit the forms to the BACB unless asked, but both of you must keep copies for at least seven years.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Individual Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form
The BCBA Exam
After your degree, coursework, and fieldwork are done, you apply to the BACB to sit for the national exam. The application fee is $245, and when you schedule through Pearson VUE you pay another $125 appointment fee. The exam is 185 multiple-choice questions, four options each, with four hours to complete it. Questions come from the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th edition), in effect since January 2025.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Take the pass rate seriously. In 2025, 51% of first-time test takers passed, and only 23% of retakers passed.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The Florida State License
Passing the exam gives you the national BCBA credential. To practice in Florida, especially if you plan to bill Medicaid or state-regulated insurance, you also need a license from the Florida Department of Health’s Division of Medical Quality Assurance. The state application requires:
- Official verification of an active, valid BCBA credential.
- A completed application packet and state fees. Florida law caps the initial application fee at $100 and the initial license fee at $300, though current board rules may set different amounts.
- A Level 2 criminal background screening that includes both state and federal history checks.
The background screening is required by Section 456.0135, Florida Statutes. Your fingerprints go electronically to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), which forwards them to the FBI; the licensing board then reviews the results.6Florida Senate. Florida Code 456.0135 – General Background Screening Provisions You pay the fingerprint processing cost out of pocket through an FDLE-approved vendor, and processing can take a few weeks. If you have a job start date, start this early.
Keeping Both Credentials Active
Once you’re practicing in Florida, you maintain two renewal cycles. Let either one lapse and you can’t work.
The BACB renews every two years. You need 32 continuing education units per cycle, including at least 4 CEUs in ethics and, if you supervise trainees, 3 CEUs in supervision.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA Handbook Renewal runs through your BACB Gateway account and costs roughly $215.
Florida also renews biennially through the DOH. Besides the board’s renewal fee, you pay a $43.25 FDLE fingerprint retention fee at renewal when your retention period is expiring, as required by Section 456.0135(6)(1).7Florida Board of Medicine. Renewal Fees Florida requires its own continuing education for DOH-licensed healthcare practitioners, including a two-hour Prevention of Medical Errors course that applies across healthcare professions. State and BACB CE don’t always overlap, so plan your hours to cover both.
What Changes January 1, 2027
If you’re early in your planning, know that the BACB is restructuring the certification on January 1, 2027. The four pathways consolidate into two: Pathway 1 continues to require an APBA-accredited or ABAI-recognized degree, and Pathway 2 continues to accept a master’s in any field plus behavior-analytic coursework. The faculty pathway and the postdoctoral pathway are eliminated.5Behavior Analyst Certification Board. 2027 BCBA Requirements
Fieldwork totals stay the same at 2,000 and 1,500 hours, but the concentrated supervision rate drops from 10% to 7.5% per supervisory period, and the monthly maximum rises from 130 to 160 hours on both tracks. New monthly and final fieldwork verification forms take effect for anyone applying under the 2027 standards.5Behavior Analyst Certification Board. 2027 BCBA Requirements If you’re starting fieldwork now but won’t apply until 2027 or later, confirm with the BACB which forms and rules apply to you before your supervisor signs anything.
