Bibb County Sales Tax Rate: 8% Breakdown and Exemptions

The Bibb County sales tax rate is 8% in 2026. That total is Georgia’s 4% statewide sales tax plus 4% in local taxes approved by Macon-Bibb County voters.1Department of Revenue. General Rate Chart Effective April 1, 2026 Through June 30, 2026 The 8% applies to most retail sales, leases, and rentals of tangible personal property in the county, with a handful of important exceptions for groceries, prescriptions, and vehicles.

How the 8% Rate Breaks Down

Georgia charges the same 4% state sales and use tax in every county.2Justia. Georgia Code 48-8-30 – Imposition, Rate, and Collection of Tax The local 4% in Bibb County is made up of four separate one-cent levies:

  • LOST (1%) — the Local Option Sales Tax, authorized under O.C.G.A. § 48-8-80, shared between the consolidated Macon-Bibb County government and qualified municipalities in the county.
  • SPLOST (1%) — the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, authorized under O.C.G.A. § 48-8-110, restricted to capital projects like roads, public safety equipment, and recreation facilities. Voters renewed it in March 2025 by an 83% margin, and the continuation is projected to raise $450 million over the life of the tax.3Macon-Bibb County Government. SPLOST Overwhelmingly Approved
  • ESPLOST (1%) — the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which funds Bibb County School District capital improvements. Voters renewed it in November 2025 for another five years.4Bibb County School District. ESPLOST
  • OLOST (1%) — the Other Local Option Sales Tax, which supports general local government operations.

When all four local pennies are in force, as they are in 2026, the combined rate is 8%.

What Gets Taxed at a Lower Rate or Not at All

Groceries

Unprepared food sold for off-premises consumption is exempt from the 4% state tax but still subject to local taxes. In Bibb County that means groceries are taxed at 4% rather than 8%.5Legal Information Institute. Prescription Drugs and Medical Equipment

Prescription drugs are completely exempt from both state and local sales tax in Georgia, for individuals, hospitals, and clinics alike. Durable medical equipment prescribed for a specific person also qualifies, which covers items such as oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, ventilators, and drug infusion equipment.7Legal Information Institute. Motor Vehicles

You don’t pay the 8% sales tax when you buy a car at a Bibb County dealership. Georgia replaced sales tax on vehicle purchases with the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) in 2013. Buyers instead pay a one-time 7% TAVT based on the vehicle’s fair market value when titling it, and the TAVT also takes the place of the former annual vehicle property tax.

When the Rate Could Change

SPLOST and ESPLOST are both time-limited taxes that only continue if voters renew them. Both were approved for new cycles in 2025, so the 8% rate is secure for the near term, but if either lapses in a future election the combined rate would drop by a penny.
