Brockton Birth Certificate: In Person, by Mail, or Online

A certified copy of a Brockton birth certificate costs $24.00 and is issued by the Brockton City Clerk’s office at 45 School Street for anyone born within city limits.1City of Brockton. Frequently Asked Questions You can request it in person or by mail. If you need to pay by credit card or order from out of state, the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records is the alternative.

Who Can Request One

Massachusetts sorts birth records by the parents’ marital status at the time of birth. If the parents were married, the record is open, and any member of the public can request a copy as long as they can supply enough detail to locate it.2General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Part I, Title VII, Chapter 46, Section 2A

If the parents were not married, the record is restricted. Access is limited to the person named on the certificate, a parent listed on the record, an attorney acting for the individual, a legal guardian, a conservator, or a government official whose duties require it. Anyone else needs a court order from Massachusetts Probate and Family Court, even if the person named on the record has died.2General Court of Massachusetts. What to Have Ready

To find the record, the clerk needs the person’s full name at birth, date of birth, and the parents’ names. For older records or common surnames, add the mother’s maiden name so the search doesn’t bog down.

For restricted records, bring a valid photo ID. A state driver’s license or any government-issued photo ID works.3Mass.gov. Order a Birth, Marriage, or Death Certificate Parents ordering a child’s certificate by mail must include a notarized letter with the child’s name and date of birth, plus a photocopy of the parent’s ID.1City of Brockton. Ordering Online or Out of State

The Brockton City Clerk does not appear to offer online ordering. If you need to pay by card or order from a distance, the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics keeps copies of all state birth records and offers three channels:3Mass.gov. Will It Work for a Passport or REAL ID

Not every certified copy satisfies federal rules. For a U.S. passport, the State Department requires the certificate to show:7U.S. Department of State. Citizenship Evidence

  • Full name, date of birth, and place of birth.
  • Full names of both parents.
  • A filing date within one year of birth.
  • The official seal or stamp of the issuing office.
  • The registrar’s signature.

A certificate filed more than a year after birth is treated as a delayed birth certificate and must include either the birth attendant’s signature or an affidavit from a parent, along with a list of the documents used to create the record. If no birth record exists at all, you’ll need a Letter of No Record from the state before applying.7U.S. Department of State. Citizenship Evidence

REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, so domestic flights and entry to federal buildings now require a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted ID such as a passport.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID The Massachusetts RMV accepts a certified birth certificate as proof of identity for REAL ID applications. An abstract or abbreviated version generally will not be accepted, so ask the City Clerk for a full certified copy.

Using the Certificate Abroad

A certified copy works within the United States, but foreign use usually requires an extra step. Countries in the Hague Convention require an apostille; countries outside it require an authentication certificate.9USAGov. Authenticate an Official Document for Use Outside the U.S. In Massachusetts, both come from the Secretary of the Commonwealth for $6.00 per document, and the stamp is placed on the certified copy itself, so order an extra copy from Brockton before sending one in for authentication.10Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Fixing an Error on the Record

Corrections start at the City Clerk’s office where the birth was recorded. You’ll need evidence that the information was wrong at or near the time of the event. The Registry only reflects what was true at the time of birth, so a later legal name change is not handled through the correction process.11Mass.gov. Amend or Correct a Birth, Death, or Marriage Record

Call the Brockton City Clerk at (508) 580-7114 to confirm what paperwork your specific correction needs. Common amendments include fixing a misspelled name or adding a parent. Adding a biological father requires a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage form, and if the mother was married to someone else at the time of birth, an Affidavit of Non-Paternity signed by the mother and her spouse is also required.11Mass.gov. Amend or Correct a Birth, Death, or Marriage Record

Amendments that have to go through the state Registry carry a $50.00 fee plus the cost of a new certified copy, and mailed requests are typically reviewed within three to four months. Court-ordered changes like adoptions are sent to the Registry directly by Massachusetts Probate and Family Court, so no separate application is needed on your end.11Mass.gov.
