Broward County Parking Citation: Pay, Contest, and Late Fees

A Broward County parking citation must be paid or contested within 10 business days of the date it was issued.1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking The Broward County Clerk of the Circuit and County Courts handles payments, records, and hearings for citations issued throughout the county.2Broward County Clerk of Courts. Home Page Under Florida law, the registered owner of the vehicle is personally liable for the ticket unless they can prove someone else had control of the vehicle at the time.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.1967 – Liability for Payment of Parking Ticket Violations and Other Parking Violations Ten business days is a shorter window than most people assume, and missing it starts a chain of late fees, registration holds, and collection activity that can turn a small fine into a significant expense.

Finding Your Citation Record

The Clerk’s office offers two online lookup options: the Clerk’s Online Fine Payment portal, and the PayIt platform at payitbrowardclerk.payitgov.com, which has a companion mobile app for searching cases, setting reminders, and storing receipts.1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking You will need either the citation number from your ticket or your license plate number and state of registration.

A citation only becomes searchable after it has been entered into the Clerk’s system, so a brand-new ticket may not appear online for a day or two. Enter your plate exactly as it reads on your registration; a mistyped character pulls up the wrong record or nothing at all, and the 10-business-day clock keeps running either way.

Paying the Ticket

The Clerk’s office accepts payment through several channels:1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking

  • Online through the Clerk’s Online Fine Payment service or the PayIt website and mobile app. Processing and transaction fees apply.
  • By mail with a check or money order to Clerk of Courts Parking Division, P.O. Box 14610, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33302-4610. Write your citation number on the payment.
  • In person at any Broward County Clerk Parking/Code Enforcement service location with cash, check, or money order.
  • At any Florida AMSCOT location, which accepts cash on Broward parking cases for a processing fee.

One restriction catches people off guard. If your license plate renewal has already been suspended because of unpaid parking citations, personal checks are no longer accepted. You will need cash, a money order, or a card payment to clear the balance.1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking

Payment Plans

If you cannot pay in full, the Clerk’s office offers payment agreements, but only in person at a service location. You cannot set one up online, and no one can set it up on your behalf. Bring a valid ID. There is a $25 processing fee per case, and installment payments must be made by mail or in person using cash, check, or money order.1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking

Contesting the Citation

You can contest a ticket you believe was issued in error, but weigh the decision before you request a hearing. Under Florida law, anyone who elects to appear before a hearing officer waives the right to simply pay the civil penalty printed on the ticket. The hearing officer decides independently whether a violation occurred and sets the penalty, which can end up higher than the original amount.3The Florida Legislature. Fort Lauderdale Citations

Fort Lauderdale uses a two-tier appeal process. A Tier One Appeal must be filed within 10 calendar days of the citation date through Fort Lauderdale’s online parking portal, where you enter the citation or plate information, explain in detail why you believe the ticket was wrong, and attach any supporting documents.4City of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Appeal Information

If the Tier One decision goes against you, you have 10 calendar days to request a Tier Two Appeal. The Tier Two form must be submitted in person or by mail to Fort Lauderdale Parking Services at 290 N.E. 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. That office forwards the case to the Broward County Clerk of Courts, which assigns a county reference number and schedules a hearing. Once the Clerk has the case, all further payments and communications go through the Clerk, and collection activity pauses until the hearing is resolved.4City of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Citations From Other Broward Cities

For most other municipalities in Broward County, you file a written request for a hearing directly with the Broward County Clerk of Courts within 10 working days of the citation date. Some cities also allow you to contest by mail using a notarized statement and supporting evidence instead of appearing in person. The Clerk sets a hearing within 60 calendar days and mails the hearing date with at least seven working days’ notice.5American Legal Publishing. Weston, FL Code of Ordinances 72.92 – Administrative Appeal

Procedures and forms are not identical across every municipality, so read the back of your ticket and check the issuing city’s website for the exact process. The constant across all of them is the deadline: wait too long and you lose the right to contest.

Late Fees

Late fees apply once the 10-business-day deadline passes, and the amount depends on the issuing city. Weston, for example, adds a $12 late fee per violation.6American Legal Publishing. Weston, FL Code of Ordinances 72.90 – Parking Enforcement Other municipalities set their own surcharges. Beyond the city-level late fee, state law says anyone who fails to satisfy the court’s directive waives the right to pay the original civil penalty and is eventually deemed convicted of the parking violation, at which point the court adds its own collection costs.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.1967 – Liability for Payment of Parking Ticket Violations and Other Parking Violations

Registration Holds

Florida law authorizes counties and municipalities to report drivers with three or more outstanding parking violations to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The department then flags the vehicle registration and blocks renewal until every outstanding ticket is cleared.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.1967 – Liability for Payment of Parking Ticket Violations and Other Parking Violations The threshold drops to a single outstanding violation when the ticket involves a handicapped parking space or a similar local disability-parking ordinance.

Clearing the hold requires paying every accumulated fine, late fee, and collection cost in full. Once the suspension is in place, personal checks are no longer accepted.1Broward County Clerk of Courts. Parking

Vehicle Immobilization

Some Broward municipalities go further and physically immobilize vehicles with outstanding parking debt. Hollywood, for example, uses both traditional wheel boots and a windshield-mounted device called the Barnacle. Removing either device requires paying all outstanding citations in full. If you pay the Barnacle removal fee through the QR code on the device, a $300 temporary hold is placed on your card and refunded within two to five business days once the device is returned.7City of Hollywood, FL. Collections and Credit Impact

If the debt remains outstanding long enough, the account can be sold or transferred to a private collection agency, and the balance grows to include collection surcharges. Federal law still applies at that stage. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the collector must send you a validation notice so you can confirm the debt is yours, and must investigate if you dispute it.8Federal Trade Commission. Setting the Debt Parking Brake

A parking ticket by itself does not appear on your credit report; the major credit bureaus no longer include that type of public record. Once a collection agency reports the debt, however, it can appear as a collection account and remain on your credit report for seven years from the original delinquency date. Some newer credit scoring models ignore paid collection accounts with a zero balance. Older models that some lenders still use are less forgiving.

Accessible Parking Space Citations

Citations for parking in a space designated for people with disabilities carry higher stakes, because a single outstanding violation of that type can trigger a registration flag with the state.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.1967 – Liability for Payment of Parking Ticket Violations and Other Parking Violations

If you received a ticket for parking in a handicapped space and believe the space was improperly marked, federal ADA standards set the minimum requirements. Each accessible space must be at least 96 inches wide with an adjacent access aisle of at least 60 inches, clearly marked, at the same level as the parking space, and connected to an accessible route to the building.9ADA.gov. ADA Compliance Brief: Restriping Parking Spaces Each space must also have a sign bearing the international symbol of accessibility mounted at least 60 inches above the ground, and van-accessible spaces require a second sign identifying them as such. Parking facilities with four or fewer total spaces are the only exception to the signage rule.10ADA.gov. Accessible Parking Spaces Missing or improper signage can support an appeal, but you will need photos and documentation to make the argument stick.
