Butler County PA Sales Tax: 6% Rate, Exemptions, and Use Tax

The Butler County PA sales tax rate is 6%, and every penny of it is Pennsylvania’s statewide rate. Butler County adds no local sales tax, so shoppers here pay less than those in Philadelphia (8%) or Allegheny County (7%). The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue collects and administers the tax through its online portal, myPATH.

Why the Rate Stops at 6%

Pennsylvania imposes a flat 6% sales and use tax on most retail purchases of goods and services.1Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 72 P.S. Taxation and Fiscal Affairs 7202 – Imposition of Tax State law lets only two local jurisdictions add anything on top: Philadelphia adds 2% and Allegheny County adds 1%. Every other county, Butler included, stays at the base rate.

A $500 purchase in Butler County carries $30 in tax. The same purchase in Pittsburgh costs $35, and in Philadelphia $40. Retailers collect the tax at the register and hold it in trust for the Commonwealth until they remit it.2Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 72 P.S. Satellite radio subscriptions fall in the same bucket.

What’s Exempt

Pennsylvania exempts several categories of everyday necessities. For most Butler County households, the big ones are groceries, clothing, medicine, and residential heating.

Food and Groceries

Most food bought at a grocery store, supermarket, or convenience store is tax-free. Produce, meat, canned goods, and frozen dinners you take home to prepare all qualify. The exemption disappears for ready-to-eat meals from restaurants, caterers, and fast food places. Soft drinks are always taxable. Hot foods, sandwiches, and salad bar purchases from a grocery store are taxable too, even though the grocery store itself is not treated as a restaurant.5Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 72 P.S. Taxation and Fiscal Affairs 7204 – Exclusions from Tax

Clothing and Footwear

Most everyday clothing and shoes are exempt. Work uniforms, raincoats, sneakers for daily wear, t-shirts, and undergarments carry no tax. The exceptions trip people up: formal wear, fur, and sport-specific gear are taxable. That includes prom dresses, tuxedos, bridal gowns, graduation caps and gowns, items made primarily of fur, swimming suits, bowling shoes, and ballet shoes.6Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Use Tax on Online and Out-of-State Purchases

Buy something online or from an out-of-state seller that doesn’t charge Pennsylvania tax, and you owe the state 6% use tax on the purchase. The rate matches the sales tax and applies to the full price, shipping included.8Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Use Tax for Individuals Most large online retailers now collect Pennsylvania tax automatically. Smaller sellers and private-party sales often don’t.

You can report use tax throughout the year on myPATH or once a year on your Form PA-40 state income tax return. The annual option is not available for motor vehicles, boats, ATVs, or snowmobiles, which must be reported separately.8Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Use Tax for Individuals

If You Sell Taxable Goods or Services

Any business selling taxable goods or services in Pennsylvania needs a sales tax license before its first sale. Registration is free through myPATH.9Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Register My Business for Taxes You’ll provide your Federal Employer Identification Number (or Social Security Number for sole proprietors), the legal business name, physical address, anticipated start date, and estimated monthly sales. The Department uses that estimate to assign your filing frequency.

Most licenses must be renewed every five years. Transient vendor licenses run shorter and expire at the end of January each year. A lapsed license means you cannot legally collect tax, so the renewal date matters.

If you buy inventory to resell, you can use Form REV-1220 to claim an exemption at purchase. Keep each completed certificate on file for at least four years.10Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Pennsylvania Tax Exemption Certificate REV-1220

Filing Schedule and the Vendor Discount

Businesses file and pay through myPATH on a monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual schedule assigned by the Department based on tax liability. Returns and payments are due by the 20th of the month after each reporting period ends. If the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.11Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. 2026 Pennsylvania Sales, Use, and Hotel Occupancy Tax Returns, Tax Periods, and Administrative Due Dates

File on time and Pennsylvania pays you a small vendor discount: 1% of the tax collected, capped at $25 per return for monthly filers, $75 for quarterly filers, and $150 for semi-annual filers. myPATH calculates it automatically. One day late and you lose it entirely.12Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Return Due Date and Vendor Discount

Because sales tax is a trust fund held for the Commonwealth, the Department can pursue the people who received the money, including corporate officers and other responsible individuals, if a business fails to remit.2Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 72 P.S. Taxation and Fiscal Affairs 7225 – Taxes Held in Trust The corporate veil does not shield those funds.

Records and Audits

The Department can audit sales tax records going back three years from the date a return was filed. If no return was filed, or a fraudulent one was, there is no time limit.14Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Statutes Title 72 P.S. Taxation and Fiscal Affairs 7407.3 – Limitation of Assessments Four years is the safer retention window, matching the retention rule for resale certificates. Keep sales slips, register tapes, exemption certificates, purchase invoices, and the worksheets behind each return.15Legal Information Institute. 61 Pa.
