CA License Number Formats: Driver, Contractor, Real Estate, Bar

Every California license follows a fixed California license number format set by its issuing agency, and the pattern is a quick first check on whether a number is real. A driver’s license is one letter plus seven digits. A contractor license is purely numeric, up to eight digits. A real estate license is eight digits, padded with leading zeros if needed. A physician’s number is a letter plus seven digits with zeros inserted after the letter. An attorney’s bar number is all numeric and sequential by admission date.

Driver’s License and State ID Card

A California driver’s license or state ID card number is one letter followed by seven digits, such as A1234567. The letter is always the first character. The same number appears on both a driver’s license and a state-issued ID card and stays with the person for life. It’s a serial identifier and doesn’t encode a birth date, address, or anything else personal.

Under Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations, a California driver’s license or ID card issued on or after October 1, 2000 counts as a primary identification document when you apply for a new license or renewal.1Legal Information Institute. Contractor License

Contractor license numbers from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) are all numeric. No letter prefix, no suffix. A number can be up to eight digits and is assigned sequentially, so smaller numbers belong to contractors licensed earlier.2Contractors State License Board. If you see a letter mixed into what someone claims is a contractor number, that’s wrong on its face. Business and Professions Code section 7030.5 also requires licensed contractors to include their license number in every construction contract, subcontract, bid, and advertisement, so you should be able to find the number printed on paperwork and marketing without having to ask.3California Legislative Information. Real Estate License

The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) assigns an eight-digit, all-numeric license identification number to every broker and salesperson. The DRE itself describes this as an “8-digit license number” in its advertising guidance.4Department of Real Estate. A number given to you as five or six digits without the padding isn’t formatted correctly, and it’s worth checking before you sign a listing or buyer agreement.

Physician and Surgeon License

A physician and surgeon license from the Medical Board of California is eight characters: one letter, then seven digits. If the base number has fewer than seven digits, zeros are inserted after the letter to fill the length. A base number of A23456 becomes A0023456.5California Cancer Reporting System. The letter prefix reflects the pathway to licensure, not a specialty or location:

  • Type A: graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools licensed through the FLEX, USMLE, or LMCC exams with fewer than four years of licensure in another state, as well as certain international graduates.
  • Type C: graduates of U.S., Canadian, or international medical schools who were licensed in another state for four or more years before applying in California.
  • Type G: graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools licensed through the NBME examination.

These categories come from the Medical Board’s own list of license types.6Medical Board of California. License Types

Attorney Bar Number

An attorney licensed by the State Bar of California gets an all-numeric bar number assigned sequentially. Attorneys admitted decades ago may have only three or four digits; recent admissions carry six or more. The bar number is the main public identifier for looking up admission date, current status, and any discipline history.

How to Verify a California License Number

Format is a first filter. Verification is where you actually confirm the person is licensed. Every agency runs a free online lookup:

  • Contractors: the CSLB’s Check a License page returns status, classification, bond details, and complaints by license number or business name.2Contractors State License Board. Check a Contractor License or Home Improvement Salesperson Registration
  • Real estate agents: the DRE’s public license search shows whether a broker or salesperson is currently licensed and in good standing.
  • Physicians: the Medical Board’s verification tool shows license type, status, issue date, and enforcement actions.
  • Attorneys: the State Bar’s search at calbar.ca.gov shows admission date, status, and discipline history.

A number in the wrong format is a reason to pause. A contractor number with letters in it, a real estate number that’s only five digits with no padding, a physician number without a leading letter: each one is a sign to run the name and number through the agency’s site before you hand over money or sign a contract. The search takes under a minute.
