Calaveras County Sales Tax: Rates, Exemptions, and Use Tax

The sales tax rate in Calaveras County is 8.25% in unincorporated areas and 8.75% inside the Angels Camp city limits.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates Both figures include California’s 7.25% statewide base, plus local district taxes that voters approved to fund fire protection and other services.

Why Angels Camp Pays More

The 8.25% county rate comes from the 7.25% state base plus a 1% county-wide district tax voters approved under Measure A in March 2024. Measure A funds fire districts throughout Calaveras County and the Angels Camp Fire Department, has no expiration date, and generates roughly $5 million a year.

Inside Angels Camp, the city adds another 0.50% district tax, bringing the total to 8.75%.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Every register inside city limits should charge the higher figure, and shoppers who live near the city line sometimes assume otherwise.

What the Rate Applies To

California sales tax applies to tangible personal property. In plain terms, that means physical items you can pick up and carry out: clothing, furniture, electronics, building materials, appliances, household goods. Professional services like legal advice or accounting are not taxed.

Several large categories are exempt from the Calaveras rate entirely.

Groceries

Most food products meant to be eaten off-premises are exempt. That covers produce, dairy, meat, eggs, bread, canned goods, and even candy, snack foods, and bottled water.2California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Regulation 1602 – Food Products The exemption ends where preparation begins. Hot prepared food from a deli counter, restaurant, or food truck is taxable, as is food sold with eating utensils or heated by the seller. A cold sandwich pulled from the refrigerator case is exempt. The same sandwich pressed hot behind the counter is not.

Prescription Medicine

Prescription medicines dispensed by a pharmacist or furnished directly by a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist are exempt.3California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Regulation 1591 – Medicines and Medical Devices Over-the-counter drugs bought without a prescription are taxed at the full local rate. Some medical devices qualify, including prostheses and ostomy appliances, but the CDTFA’s list is narrower than many buyers expect. Verify eligibility before assuming an expensive piece of equipment is tax-free.

Digital Products

Software, ebooks, mobile apps, and other products delivered electronically are generally not taxed, because no physical item changes hands.4California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Internet Sales – Publication 109 – Nontaxable Sales The exemption disappears if the seller also hands you a physical backup copy. Downloading software is tax-free. Buying the same software on a flash drive makes the full sale taxable.

Sales to the Federal Government

Sales to the United States government and its agencies, including federal departments, the armed services, and the U.S. Postal Service, are exempt.5California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Sales to the United States Government – Publication 102 This does not extend to sales to the State of California, Calaveras County itself, cities, or school districts. Those purchases are generally taxable even when paid for with federal grant money.

Resale Purchases

A business buying inventory it intends to resell can avoid tax at the register by giving the supplier a resale certificate (CDTFA form 230) with its seller’s permit number, a description of the merchandise, and the phrase “for resale.” Using the certificate for items the business actually consumes rather than resells is a violation and can trigger penalties.

Use Tax on Online and Out-of-State Purchases

When you buy something from an out-of-state retailer that does not collect California sales tax, you owe use tax at the same local rate. For a Calaveras County resident outside Angels Camp, that is 8.25%.6California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California Use Tax It applies to purchases made online, by phone, or by mail order whenever the seller skips California tax at checkout.

Most individuals report and pay use tax on their California state income tax return, which includes a use tax line and a lookup table that estimates what you owe based on income if you didn’t track individual purchases. Businesses with seller’s permits report it on their regular CDTFA returns. This obligation catches many residents off guard, especially on larger items bought from out-of-state websites that don’t charge tax at the register.

If You Sell in Calaveras County

Anyone who sells or leases tangible personal property in California needs a seller’s permit from the CDTFA. That includes retail stores, online sellers, and vendors running a booth at the Calaveras County Fair, though temporary operations of 30 days or fewer at a single location apply for a temporary permit instead.7California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Your California Seller’s Permit – Publication 73 Registration is free online. You’ll need your Social Security number, a driver’s license or state ID, and your Federal Employer Identification Number if you have one.

If you sell exclusively through a large marketplace like Amazon, eBay, or Etsy, the platform collects and remits California sales tax on your behalf under the Marketplace Facilitator Act, and you generally don’t need your own seller’s permit.8California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Tax Guide for Marketplace Facilitator Act Sell anywhere else too, including your own website or a local farmers’ market, and you need the permit for those sales.

Filing Deadlines

The CDTFA assigns a filing frequency based on your sales volume. Most small businesses file quarterly, with returns due on the last day of the month after each quarter closes:9California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Filing Dates for Sales and Use Tax Returns

  • January through March: due April 30
  • April through June: due July 31
  • July through September: due October 31
  • October through December: due January 31

Higher-volume businesses may be assigned monthly or quarterly prepayment schedules. Returns must be submitted by midnight Pacific time on the due date, or by 3:00 p.m. Pacific time for businesses that pay by electronic funds transfer.

Late Penalties

Miss a filing deadline or underpay and you’ll owe a 10% penalty on the tax due for that period. The CDTFA caps the penalty at 10% for a single period whether you filed late, paid late, or both.10California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Having Trouble Paying? Interest runs on top of that from the day the payment is late, currently at 10% a year for 2026, applied monthly.11California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Interest Rates The CDTFA recalculates the interest rate every six months, so the figure can shift in the second half of the year.

The 10% penalty stings on its own. The compounding interest is where a lapsed return gets expensive. If you can’t pay the full amount, file the return on time and pay what you can; that still avoids the late-filing penalty and slows the interest.
