The Calcasieu Parish sales tax comes to 10.75% in most of the parish as of January 1, 2025, combining Louisiana’s 5% state rate with a 5.75% local rate. A few areas pay less and a few pay more: Ward 1, which covers Moss Bluff, Gillis, and Topsy, runs 9.25%, while certain Economic Development Districts push the total as high as 12.75%. The rate that actually applies to a sale depends on the precise delivery address.1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Calcasieu Parish
Rates by Location
Louisiana’s state portion jumped from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025 under Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Legislative Session.2Louisiana Department of Revenue. General Sales and Use Tax That 5% is the same everywhere in the parish. The local layer is what varies:1Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Calcasieu Parish
- Lake Charles, Sulphur, Iowa, DeQuincy, Vinton, Westlake, and most unincorporated areas: 10.75% total (5.75% local + 5% state)
- Ward 1 (Moss Bluff, Gillis, Topsy): 9.25% total (4.25% local + 5% state)
- MorganField, Lakefront, and Nelson Market Economic Development Districts: 11.75% total
- Hope, Opelram, Executive, and Westlake Opportunity Economic Development Districts: 12.75% total
Ward 1 pays less because its police jury levy is 1% instead of the 2.5% assessed elsewhere, and the area has no municipal tax on top. The Economic Development Districts sit at the other end, with an extra 1% or 2% funding district projects. Two addresses a mile apart can carry different rates, so vendors need to identify the correct jurisdiction for each sale rather than relying on a single parish-wide number.
What’s Taxed and What’s Exempt
Louisiana sales tax applies to retail sales, leases, and rentals of tangible personal property, defined by statute as anything that can be seen, weighed, measured, felt, or touched.3FindLaw. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 47 Section 301 Vehicles, furniture, electronics, and appliances are the obvious ones. Prepaid wireless calling services are also treated as tangible property for tax purposes. Taxable services include repairs to personal property and short-term lodging such as hotel and motel rooms.
Several categories stay exempt from both state and local tax:
- Prescription drugs
- Grocery food purchased for home preparation and consumption
- Residential utilities
- Purchases for resale, when the buyer provides a valid resale certificate
The 2024 constitutional amendment explicitly preserved the exemptions for groceries, residential utilities, and prescription drugs.4Louisiana Department of Revenue. How Does the Amendment Affect Sales Taxes Charged on Groceries, Utilities, and Prescription Drugs
Businesses buying inventory for resale can skip the tax at purchase by presenting a Louisiana resale certificate, obtained through the Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) and renewed annually. The application asks for the Louisiana Department of Revenue account number, physical and mailing addresses for each location, a current NAICS code, and resale inventory purchase amounts for the previous two years.5Louisiana Department of Revenue. Resale Certificate Sellers can validate a buyer’s certificate online, though newly registered businesses may not appear in the system for about a week.
Use Tax on Out-of-State Purchases
If you buy something from an out-of-state retailer that doesn’t collect Louisiana sales tax, you owe consumer use tax on it. This covers online orders, catalog purchases, and anything bought outside Louisiana and brought back into the parish.6Louisiana Department of Revenue. Consumer Use Tax The same categories of tangible personal property that would be taxable locally are taxable here: electronics, clothing, furniture, sporting goods.
Rather than requiring you to calculate your exact local rate, Louisiana collects consumer use tax at a simplified combined rate. You can report and pay it once a year on your Louisiana individual income tax return, or file Form R-1035 monthly by the 20th of the month after the purchase.6Louisiana Department of Revenue. Consumer Use Tax Most people settle up at tax time.
Registering a Business to Collect
Before collecting sales tax from a customer in Calcasieu Parish, you have to register for a local sales tax account. The parish uses the online Local Sales Tax Registration Application at www.laota.com.7Calcasieu Parish School Board. Sales and Use Tax Registration is required for anyone making retail sales, leasing tangible personal property, providing taxable services, holding property for resale, or maintaining a business location in the parish.8Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Registration
Each business location needs its own registration and account, and separate records are required for each. Have your federal employer identification number, legal entity name, physical operating address, and business start date ready before you begin. Once the parish verifies everything, you’ll receive a local account number tied to your specific taxing jurisdiction.
Filing Returns
Registered businesses file sales tax returns with the Calcasieu Parish Sales and Use Tax Office monthly or quarterly, depending on volume. Returns are due the first day of the month after the reporting period and become delinquent if not filed by the 20th.9Calcasieu Parish Sales and Use Tax Dept. Calcasieu Parish Sales and Use Tax Return January’s return is due February 1 and delinquent after February 20.
You can file electronically through Parish E-File at parishe-file.revenue.louisiana.gov or through SalesTaxOnline at www.salestaxonline.com. Both calculate what’s owed from reported gross sales and issue a confirmation number. Paper returns are available by calling (337) 217-4280 or in person at 2439 Sixth Street, Lake Charles, and should be mailed with payment to P.O. Dealers who file and pay the state portion on time can keep a small vendor’s compensation deduction. The statutory rate is 1.05%, but because it applies to only part of the 5% state tax, the effective rate is 0.84% beginning January 1, 2025.10Louisiana Department of Revenue. What Is the State Vendor’s Compensation Deduction Rate It applies to the state portion only, not the Calcasieu Parish local portion.
Late Penalties and Interest
Miss the 20th and both penalties and interest start. The penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax when the return becomes delinquent, with another 5% for each additional 30-day period the tax goes unpaid, capped at 25%.11Louisiana Department of Revenue. How Are Interest and Penalties Computed Four months late hits 20%; anything beyond five months tops out at 25%.
Interest runs separately on top. The state resets its interest rate annually. For local Calcasieu Parish taxes, interest accrues at 1.25% per month (or the daily equivalent) from the first day of the month after the reporting period until paid.9Calcasieu Parish Sales and Use Tax Dept. Calcasieu Parish Sales and Use Tax Return Recordkeeping failures under Louisiana R.S. 47:309 can bring fines up to $500 per reporting period or up to 60 days of imprisonment.7Calcasieu Parish School Board. Sales and Use Tax
The parish can audit returns going back three years, measured from December 31 of the year the taxes became due.12Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 47 Section 337.67 If you file a return late, the three-year clock starts from the year you actually filed, which extends the parish’s window. Keep invoices, receipts, exemption certificates, and bank deposit records for each location for at least three years, and longer if any returns went in late.
Remote Sellers Shipping Into the Parish
Out-of-state businesses selling into Calcasieu Parish have to collect once they cross either threshold in the current or preceding calendar year: more than $100,000 in gross revenue from Louisiana sales, or 200 or more separate transactions delivered into the state.13Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers. Frequently Asked Questions
Remote sellers register and remit through the Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers rather than Calcasieu Parish directly. The commission is the single collection point, so there’s no need to register with each parish separately. Once you cross a threshold, you have 30 days to apply to the commission and must begin collecting at actual local rates within 60 days.13Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers. Frequently Asked Questions Sales made through a marketplace facilitator like Amazon don’t count toward your threshold; they count toward the marketplace’s own nexus and are the marketplace’s responsibility to collect.
Buying an Existing Business
If you’re purchasing a business in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana’s successor liability rules put you on the hook for the seller’s unpaid sales taxes. You have to withhold enough of the purchase price to cover any sales tax, interest, and penalties the previous owner left unpaid, and you can’t release full payment until the seller produces either a receipt from the Secretary of Revenue showing taxes are current or a certificate confirming nothing is owed.14Louisiana Department of Revenue. Successor Liability
Skip that step and you become personally liable for the seller’s tax debt, up to the amount you paid for the business. “Purchase price” is read broadly, covering cash, transferred assets, assumed debts, and anything given in trade. A contract clause that tries to push the obligation back on the seller doesn’t override the statute. Ask for a Letter of Good Standing before closing.14Louisiana Department of Revenue.
