California Board of Pharmacy CE Requirements: Hours, Topics, and Audits

California pharmacist CE requirements call for 30 hours of approved continuing education every two years to renew an active license, with specific mandatory topics baked into that total.1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education Fall short and the Board of Pharmacy won’t just delay your renewal. It will convert your active license to inactive status, and you cannot practice on an inactive license.

The 30-Hour Rule and the Two-Year Window

Every active pharmacist license renewal requires 30 hours of CE completed during the two years immediately preceding the renewal application.1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education Hours from earlier cycles don’t carry over. You can’t bank a surplus from one cycle and apply it to the next, because the statute ties eligibility to that two-year window.

There is no minimum for live or in-person hours. All 30 can come from online or home-study courses if the provider is Board-approved. That flexibility makes it realistic to spread coursework across the full cycle instead of scrambling at the deadline.

New pharmacists get a break on their first renewal only. The Board waives CE entirely for that first cycle; starting with the second renewal, the full 30 hours apply.1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education

Mandatory Topics Inside the 30 Hours

Some of the 30 hours are reserved. You choose the rest, but these specific subjects must appear every cycle.

Law and Ethics Webinars

At least two hours must come from the Board’s own law and ethics webinars: one hour on pharmacy law and one hour on ethics.2California State Board of Pharmacy. Law and Ethics Webinar A third-party provider’s law course won’t substitute; the regulation requires the specific webinars the Board publishes.3Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 16 Section 1732.5 – Renewal Requirements for Pharmacists They are posted on the Board’s website and free to complete.

Cultural Competency

At least one of the 30 hours must be a cultural competency course meeting four criteria set in BPC 4231:1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education

  • It addresses patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender nonconforming, or queer, or who are questioning their orientation or gender identity.
  • It comes from an accreditation agency the Board recognizes.
  • It covers recognized health disparities faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
  • It demonstrates how sexual identity is affected through intersectionality.

A generic diversity CE course that doesn’t hit all four points will not satisfy this requirement. Confirm the course is written specifically to the BPC 4231 definition before you enroll.

Immunization CE (If You Vaccinate)

Pharmacists who administer vaccines must complete one additional hour of immunization-focused CE from an approved provider every two years.4Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 16 Section 1746.4 – Pharmacists Initiating and Administering Vaccines That hour counts toward the 30-hour total. It is mandatory only if you vaccinate patients.

Advanced Practice Pharmacists Owe 40 Hours

An Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) designation raises the total from 30 to 40 hours per cycle: the standard 30, plus 10 additional hours tied to your clinical practice area.5California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4233 – Advanced Practice Pharmacist Continuing Education The extra 10 must relate to what you actually do. An APh working in oncology should be taking oncology therapeutics or clinical pharmacology courses, not unrelated electives.

Where the Hours Can Come From

The Board recognizes two accreditation agencies: the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA).6California State Board of Pharmacy. Continuing Education Information Any course carrying ACPE or CPhA accreditation counts.

You can also earn credit from courses approved by certain other California healing arts boards when the content is relevant to pharmacy practice. The qualifying boards are the Medical Board of California, the California Board of Podiatric Medicine, the Dental Board of California, and the California Board of Registered Nursing.7Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 16 Section 1732.2 – Board Accredited Continuing Education That cross-approval matters if you attend interdisciplinary conferences or hold dual licensure.

Credit for Attending Board Meetings

Attending Board of Pharmacy meetings in person also earns CE. The Board allows up to six hours per renewal cycle for full Board meetings and up to two hours for committee meetings.8California State Board of Pharmacy. Earning Continuing Education Credit for Attendance of Board Meetings and Committee Meetings You have to stay for the entire session, and only meetings specifically marked as eligible qualify. Check the agenda before you show up.

Documentation and Audits

Keep your certificates of completion for at least four years after finishing each course.3Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 16 Section 1732.5 – Renewal Requirements for Pharmacists That covers two full renewal cycles, which is how far back the Board may reach when auditing.

You do not submit certificates when you renew. You attest under penalty of perjury that you completed the required hours and topics, and the Board audits a subset of renewals at random. If you’re picked, you’ll be notified by mail and must send copies of your certificates promptly.2California State Board of Pharmacy. Law and Ethics Webinar The attestation makes renewal fast. It also means a failed audit lands hard.

What Happens If You Come Up Short

Submitting a renewal application and the fee without the hours to back it up does not buy you extra time. The Board declines to renew your active license and issues an inactive one instead.1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education You cannot practice pharmacy on an inactive license.

The same outcome applies if an audit catches you without documentation. Under BPC 4231(e), the Board cancels the active license and replaces it with an inactive one.1California Legislative Information. California Code BPC 4231 – Pharmacist Continuing Education Getting back to active status means paying the renewal fees again and submitting satisfactory proof of 30 completed hours.

Inactive Status and Reactivation

Renewing as inactive by choice, whether for a career break or retirement, waives the CE requirement for that cycle.6California State Board of Pharmacy. Continuing Education Information You still pay the renewal fee to keep the license from lapsing, but you log no hours.

Returning to active practice later requires 30 hours of CE, including all mandatory topics, completed within the two years before reactivation.6California State Board of Pharmacy. Continuing Education Information If you know reactivation is coming within a year, start accumulating hours well before you file.

A Note on Pharmacy Technicians

Technicians face a much lighter state CE rule. California does not require a general total of hours for technician license renewal. The only state-mandated CE is one hour of cultural competency per renewal cycle, meeting the same four criteria as the pharmacist requirement.6California State Board of Pharmacy. Continuing Education Information

National certification is a different matter. Most technicians hold PTCB or NHA certification, and both bodies require 20 hours of CE every two years, including at least one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety, to keep that credential active. And a technician license not renewed within 90 days of expiration is canceled outright, requiring a new application under current licensing rules.9California State Board of Pharmacy.
