A California CalFresh calculator works off a single formula: your monthly benefit equals the maximum allotment for your household size minus 30% of your net income, provided your household first passes the gross and net income tests. For FFY 2026, that means a family of three needs gross monthly income under $4,442 and net income under $2,221 after deductions, with a maximum possible benefit of $785.1Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. CalFresh Eligibility Criteria2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP FY 2026 Maximum Allotments and Deductions Everything else in the calculation is figuring out which income counts, which deductions apply, and who’s in your household.
Who Counts in Your Household
Household size drives both your income limits and your maximum benefit, so start here. A CalFresh household is any group of people who live together and regularly buy and prepare meals together. Keeping finances separate from a roommate doesn’t matter if you share groceries and cook together.
Some people are grouped together automatically, whether they share meals or not:
- Spouses living together are one household.
- A parent living with their biological, adopted, or stepchild under 22 must be in the same household as that child.
- A child under 18 living under the care of a non-parent adult who exercises parental control is grouped with that adult.
Adding a person raises your income limit and maximum allotment but also adds that person’s income to the calculation. Leaving someone out who should be included can trigger an overpayment finding later.
FFY 2026 Income Limits by Household Size
Eligibility runs through two tests. The gross income test looks at total household income before deductions. The net income test looks at what’s left after deductions. Most households must pass both.
California uses Modified Categorical Eligibility, which raises the gross income limit from the federal 130% of the Federal Poverty Level to 200% for most households.3Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. CalFresh 63-503.3 Net Income – Benefit Calculation The net income limit stays at 100% of the poverty level.

Households that include someone 60 or older or a person with a disability only have to pass the net income test. The gross income test is waived entirely.3Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. CalFresh 63-503.3 Net Income – Benefit Calculation A household with high gross income but substantial medical or shelter expenses can still qualify on net income alone.
On assets: under Modified Categorical Eligibility, most CalFresh households have no asset limit. Savings accounts and vehicles generally won’t disqualify you. The small number of households not covered by MCE (for example, those with a member disqualified for an intentional program violation) face federal resource limits of $3,000, or $4,500 if the household includes an elderly or disabled member.3Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. What Counts as Income
Income splits into earned and unearned. The distinction matters because earned income gets a 20% deduction and unearned income doesn’t.
Earned income includes wages, salaries, tips, and net self-employment income. Unearned income covers Social Security payments, unemployment benefits, disability insurance, workers’ compensation, cash gifts, and interest from bank accounts.4County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency. CalFresh Program Handbook – Unearned Income Since June 2019, SSI and SSP payments are counted as unearned income for CalFresh, and SSI recipients can apply.5County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency. Several common income sources are excluded entirely. Educational assistance funded through Title IV of the Higher Education Act, including Pell Grants and needs-based scholarships, is not counted as long as the funds go toward allowable educational expenses like tuition and fees.6County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency. CalFresh Income Guidelines for Students Foster care payments for a foster child who is not a household member are excluded. So are in-kind benefits like free housing from an employer, most federal energy assistance, and reimbursements for expenses already paid.
Deductions That Lower Your Net Income
The deductions are where the real math happens. Each dollar you deduct lowers your net income, which helps you pass the net income test and raises your benefit. CalFresh allows five categories, and missing any of them leaves money on the table.
20% Earned Income Deduction
Twenty percent of all gross earned income comes off automatically. On $2,000 of monthly wages, that’s $400 before anything else is calculated. Unearned income doesn’t qualify.
Standard Deduction
Every household gets a flat standard deduction based on size. For FFY 2026:7UC Merced Basic Needs. All County Information Notice I-46-25 – CalFresh COLA FFY 2026
- 1 to 3 people: $209
- 4 people: $223
- 5 people: $261
- 6 or more: $299
Dependent Care Deduction
If you pay for care for a child or disabled adult so a household member can work or attend training, the full out-of-pocket cost is deductible. There’s no cap. Costs for babysitters, after-school programs, and care for a disabled household member all qualify, not just formal daycare.
Medical Expense Deduction (Elderly and Disabled Households Only)
Households with an elderly (60+) or disabled member can deduct unreimbursed medical costs that exceed $35 per month. If your verified expenses fall between $35.01 and $185 per month, you receive an automatic standard medical deduction of $150. If your actual expenses exceed $185, you can claim the full amount with documentation.8County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency. CalFresh Update 2024-11 Standard Medical Deduction Qualifying costs include insurance premiums, copays, prescription drugs, medical equipment, and transportation to medical appointments.
Excess Shelter Cost Deduction
This is often the largest deduction and the most involved to calculate. Shelter costs include rent or mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and utilities. Most households use the Standard Utility Allowance of $663 per month instead of tracking actual bills, as long as the household pays at least one utility other than telephone.9DPSS ePolicy. CalFresh Cost-Of-Living Adjustments for Federal Fiscal Year 2026 Households that only pay a telephone bill use the Telephone Utility Allowance of $20.
Calculate it in two steps. Add up all shelter costs, including the utility allowance. Then subtract 50% of the household’s income after all other deductions have been applied. Whatever exceeds that 50% threshold is your excess shelter deduction. For most households it’s capped at $744 per month.2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP FY 2026 Maximum Allotments and Deductions Households with an elderly or disabled member have no cap.
Calculating Your Monthly Benefit
Once you pass the income tests, the formula is simple. Take the maximum monthly allotment for your household size and subtract 30% of your net income. The 30% figure reflects the federal expectation that a household can put roughly 30 cents of each net-income dollar toward food.

Worked Example
Two-person household, one person earns $1,800 per month part-time, rent is $1,200:
- Gross income: $1,800 (under the $3,526 limit for two, passes the gross test)
- Earned income deduction: $1,800 × 20% = $360
- Standard deduction: $209
- Income after initial deductions: $1,800 − $360 − $209 = $1,231
- Shelter costs: $1,200 rent + $663 SUA = $1,863
- 50% of adjusted income: $615.50
- Excess shelter: $1,863 − $615.50 = $1,247.50, capped at $744
- Net income: $1,231 − $744 = $487 (under the $1,763 net limit)
- Benefit reduction: $487 × 30% = $146.10, rounded down to $146
- Monthly benefit: $546 − $146 = $400
If deductions wipe out your net income entirely, you get the full maximum allotment. One- and two-person households are guaranteed a minimum of at least $10 per month even when the formula would produce less.
If You Need Benefits Within Three Days
Households in immediate financial crisis can qualify for expedited processing, which delivers CalFresh benefits within three calendar days of filing instead of the standard 30. Three situations trigger it:10County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency. Expedited Service
- Gross monthly income under $150 and liquid resources (cash, checking, savings) of $100 or less.
- Monthly rent or mortgage plus utilities that exceed combined gross income and liquid resources.
- Migrant or seasonal farmworker households with $100 or less in liquid resources.
Verification other than identification can be postponed to meet the three-day deadline. The county should not delay issuing benefits because you haven’t yet produced pay stubs or other documents.
