California crab trap regulations require a sport fishing license and a Recreational Crab Trap Validation, limit trap use to ocean waters north of Point Arguello in Santa Barbara County, and set strict rules on trap count, escape rings, destruct devices, buoy marking, and how often you must service your gear. Seasons, size limits, and bag limits vary by species, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) can delay openings or restrict traps mid-season when domoic acid or whale entanglement risk flares up.
Licenses You Need Before Setting a Trap
Anyone 16 or older needs a California Sport Fishing License. For 2026, the resident license runs $64.54 and the non-resident license runs $174.14. If you’re using rigid crab traps, add a Recreational Crab Trap Validation at $2.98.1State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Sport Fishing Licenses and Report Cards Hoop nets and crab loop traps don’t require the trap validation, just the base fishing license.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Crab and CPFV Validation
When you register your trap gear, CDFW assigns you a GO ID number. You’ll need it for buoy marking, so keep it with your license.
Where Crab Traps Are Legal
Recreational crab traps may only be used in ocean waters north of Point Arguello in Santa Barbara County.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26 South of that line you have to use other legal gear, such as hoop nets or crab snares.
Even in the allowed zone, trap access is conditional. CDFW can temporarily prohibit traps when marine life entanglement risk rises, with at least five days’ notice before a restriction takes effect. During a trap restriction you can still crab by hand, hoop net, or crab snare.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26 Parts of the coast saw this kind of restriction during the 2025–2026 season.
Crabbing is also prohibited inside state marine reserves, where taking or possessing any living marine resource is illegal without a scientific collecting permit. Some state marine conservation areas allow limited take of specific species, with permissions listed individually in the regulations.4Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 632 – Marine Protected Areas, Marine Managed Areas, and Special Closures Check CDFW’s MPA maps before fishing an unfamiliar stretch of coast. Dropping a trap inside a reserve carries penalties regardless of whether you knew about the boundary.
How Many Traps and How They Must Be Built
You can fish up to 10 crab traps at a time. You may also service another 10 traps belonging to a different operator if they’ve given you written permission.3California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Trap Regulations 2025-26
Escape Rings
Every trap must have at least two rigid circular escape openings with an inside diameter of at least 4¼ inches. The bottom edge of each opening must sit within five inches of the top of the trap.5Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.80 – Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans The rings let undersized crabs out while the trap soaks. Damaged, clogged, or undersized rings make the trap illegal even if everything else checks out.
Destruct Device
Each trap needs a destruct device so that a lost or abandoned trap stops catching crabs instead of continuing to kill them indefinitely. The device must be made from a single strand of untreated cotton twine, size No. 120 or smaller. When the twine degrades in saltwater, it must create an unobstructed escape opening of at least five inches in the top or upper half of the trap. Any material that blocks or interferes with the destruct device is illegal.6Cornell Law School. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 180.2 – Trap Destruction Devices
Servicing Interval
Every crab trap must be raised, cleaned, and emptied at intervals no longer than nine days, weather permitting.7New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans If weather keeps you off the water, document the conditions.
Buoy Marking
Each crab trap must carry exactly two buoys:5Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.80 – Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans
- A main surface buoy at least 5 inches in diameter and 11 inches long, legibly marked with your CDFW-assigned GO ID number.
- A red marker buoy at least 3 inches in diameter and 5 inches long, attached no more than 3 feet from the main buoy.
If the markings aren’t legible or the GO ID is missing, enforcement officers can pull your trap.
Season Dates
Dungeness Crab
The recreational Dungeness season opens November 1. The closing date depends on where you fish:8State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Current California Ocean Recreational Fishing Regulations – San Francisco
- North of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line: through July 30.
- South of that line: through June 30.
Those are the default calendar dates. Openings are frequently delayed, most often because of domoic acid contamination or whale entanglement risk. For the 2025–2026 season, northern California’s opening was pushed back after testing revealed unsafe domoic acid levels, and some areas didn’t open until late December 2025.9State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Fishery to Open in Last Closed Area of Humboldt County After Delay Due to Public Health Risks Treat November 1 as the earliest possible date rather than a reliable one, and check CDFW’s website before each trip.
Rock Crab
Rock crab season is open year-round with no regional closures, which makes it a reliable fallback when Dungeness is delayed.10Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs
Size and Bag Limits
Dungeness crab must measure at least 5¾ inches across the carapace, taken as the shortest straight-line distance from shell edge to shell edge directly in front of the lateral spines. The daily bag and possession limit is 10.10Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs
Rock crab must measure at least 4 inches across the widest part of the shell. The daily bag and possession limit is 35.10Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 14 CCR 29.85 – Crabs
Carry a crab gauge. Wardens check sizes routinely, and a single undersized crab in your cooler can result in a citation.
Domoic Acid Advisories
Domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin that builds up in crab tissue and can cause serious neurological harm. When testing shows elevated levels, CDFW delays season openings and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) may issue consumption advisories. During the 2025–2026 season, after several northern California zones eventually opened, CDPH advised against eating crab viscera and recommended cleaning crab before cooking.9State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Dungeness Crab Fishery to Open in Last Closed Area of Humboldt County After Delay Due to Public Health Risks
The FDA threshold is 20 parts per million in crab meat, and above 30 ppm in Dungeness viscera specifically.11Food and Drug Administration. Fish and Fishery Products Hazards and Controls Guidance – Appendix 5: FDA and EPA Safety Levels in Regulations and Guidance The toxin has no taste or smell, and cooking doesn’t eliminate it. Watch for active CDPH advisories even after your zone opens.
Hoop Nets When Traps Are Restricted
When CDFW restricts rigid traps, hoop nets stay legal. They don’t require the Recreational Crab Trap Validation, only the base sport fishing license.2California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Recreational Crab and CPFV Validation The tradeoff is attention: hoop nets must be raised and inspected every two hours, compared to nine days for rigid traps.7New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Gear Restrictions for Recreational Take of Saltwater Crustaceans California allows two hoop net designs with specific ring and height specifications, and metallic mesh is prohibited.
Penalties for Violations
Most recreational crabbing violations, including fishing without a license, keeping undersized crabs, exceeding bag limits, and using improperly constructed traps, are misdemeanors under the Fish and Game Code. The standard penalty is a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in county jail. Certain violations carry enhanced penalties of up to $2,000 and one year in jail.12California Legislative Information. California Fish and Game Code 12002
Wardens can also confiscate illegal gear and any illegally caught crab. If you transport illegally caught crab across state lines, federal exposure under the Lacey Act kicks in: a knowing violation involving fish or wildlife can carry up to five years in federal prison and fines up to $250,000.13USDA APHIS.
