The main California DMV phone number is 1-800-777-0133, a toll-free line that reaches both the 24/7 automated system and, during business hours, live representatives. Callers who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired can use the TTY line at 1-800-368-4327, which only accepts messages from another TTY device.1California DMV. Specialized DMV Numbers
The main line handles most questions, but two situations have their own direct numbers. Calling the wrong one wastes your time, because general customer service can’t resolve either and will redirect you.

Hours and the Best Times to Call
All DMV phone lines run Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific time. The lines are closed on weekends and state holidays.1California DMV. Contacting the DMV The automated voice system, however, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a couple of self-service tasks.3California DMV. DMV Services – California Driver Handbook
If you need a live person, avoid Monday morning. Anyone who put off calling over the weekend hits the phones at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Mid-week mornings, especially Tuesday and Thursday between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., tend to have shorter waits. Right after 1:00 p.m. also thins out, since many people call during their own lunch break and drop off.
What the Automated Line Handles vs. a Live Agent
The 24/7 automated system can do two things without a human: renew your vehicle registration and schedule a DMV field office appointment.3California DMV. DMV Services – California Driver Handbook If either is all you need, call at midnight on a Sunday and be done with it.
Everything else needs a live agent during business hours: license suspensions, title transfers, registration holds, proof-of-insurance issues, fee disputes, and the like. When your call involves a payment or an account change, ask for a confirmation number before hanging up. That number is your proof the transaction happened if something goes wrong later.
Information to Have Ready Before You Call
A few documents in front of you keep the call short.
- Driver’s license number. California license numbers are one letter followed by seven digits (for example, A1234567), printed on the front of the license or ID card.
- Social Security number. The DMV uses it for identity verification, particularly for REAL ID transactions.4California DMV. What Is REAL ID
- Vehicle information. For registration or title questions, have your license plate number and at least the last five digits of your VIN. Both appear on your registration card.5California DMV. Vehicle Registration Status
- Pen and paper. Write down the call date, the agent’s name or ID number if offered, and any confirmation number. This matters most when you’re disputing a fee or clearing a hold.
Getting Through the Phone Menu
When you dial 1-800-777-0133, an automated menu asks you to speak your request or use the keypad. The system handles natural language reasonably well. Saying “registration renewal” or “talk to a person” tends to route you faster than working through numbered options. If nothing lands, pressing “0” or saying “representative” repeatedly usually drops you into the live-agent queue.
Be specific when someone picks up. “I need to clear a registration hold caused by a lapsed insurance notice” gets you further than “I have a problem with my registration.” Agents who understand the issue immediately tend to resolve it on the first call instead of transferring you.
When Not to Call at All
For a lot of tasks, calling is the slowest option the DMV offers.
Online Services
The DMV’s portal at dmv.ca.gov handles vehicle registration renewal, driver’s license renewal, REAL ID upgrades, address changes, title replacements, driving record orders, appointment scheduling, accident reports, and reinstatement fee payments.6California DMV. Online Services Portal If your task is on that list, there’s no reason to call.
DMV NOW Kiosks
Self-service kiosks sit in grocery stores and shopping centers across the state. They handle registration renewal and reinstatement, proof-of-insurance submissions, planned nonoperation filings, and replacement of registration cards and stickers, and they print your new card and sticker on the spot.7California DMV. Kiosks Kiosks are available during the host store’s hours, which often runs later than the DMV’s phone schedule.
Virtual Assistant
The chatbot on dmv.ca.gov can answer common questions and point you to the right online form. It won’t replace a live agent for complicated situations, but it will often save you the call.
One Note on REAL ID
REAL ID questions are a common reason to call, and the main line can help you sort out which documents qualify or troubleshoot a stuck application. But you can start the application online, and the actual field-office appointment should be booked through the online scheduler or the 24/7 automated phone system rather than through a live agent.4California DMV.
