To complete a California DMV sales license renewal, submit the renewal application through the DMV’s online occupational licensing portal with a $51 fee before your current license expires. The DMV recommends filing at least six months ahead of the expiration date.1California DMV. OL 16 M, Salespersons License Renewal Application One detail trips people up: once the license actually expires, you cannot renew it at all. You have to go through a separate, more expensive reinstatement process instead.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code – Article 2, Vehicle Salespersons – Section 11806
When to Renew
Every vehicle salesperson license is valid for three years from the date of issuance.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code – Article 2, Vehicle Salespersons – Section 11814 The DMV may send a renewal notice before expiration, but tracking the date is on you. The renewal form instructions recommend submitting six months before expiration to allow processing and mailing time.1California DMV. OL 16 M, Salespersons License Renewal Application That lead time is generous. Wait until the final month and you risk the license expiring while paperwork is still in processing.
The Vehicle Code explicitly prohibits renewing after the license has expired.2California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code – Article 2, Vehicle Salespersons – Section 11806 Miss the deadline and renewal is no longer an option.
What It Costs
The total renewal fee is $51, broken into two charges:
- $50 renewal application fee, set by the Vehicle Code and nonrefundable.4California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 11820
- $1 Family Support Program fee, collected with every renewal.5California DMV. Vehicle Salesperson License
California does not require continuing education to renew. The DMV’s renewal page lists only the application and fee. References to mandatory CE for auto sales elsewhere do not apply to this license.
How to Submit the Renewal
Online
The DMV directs applicants to its occupational licensing portal. You log in to your MyDMV account, open your license record, complete the application, and pay electronically.6California DMV. Occupational Licenses Online submission confirms receipt immediately, which matters when you are close to the expiration date.
By Mail
If you prefer paper, download Form OL 16 M (Salespersons License Renewal Application), complete it, attach a check or money order for $51, and mail it to:1California DMV. OL 16 M, Salespersons License Renewal Application

Do not send cash. Mail-in renewals move slower than online filings. If your expiration date is less than six months out, use the portal.
If Your License Expires
Missing the renewal deadline triggers automatic cancellation. Under the Vehicle Code, a salesperson’s license is automatically canceled when the licensee fails to pay the required fees or file a renewal application before the expiration date.7California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code – Article 2, Vehicle Salespersons – Section 11822 Once canceled, you must stop all sales activity. Selling vehicles on a canceled license violates the same statute that requires the license in the first place.8California Legislative Information. Reinstatement is possible but costs more. You will owe the $50 renewal fee, the $1 Family Support Program fee, and an additional $50 reinstatement fee, for $101 total.5California DMV. Vehicle Salesperson License Reinstatements go through the same online portal.
One more wrinkle: even after a license expires or is canceled, the DMV retains authority to file an accusation to revoke or suspend it. Discipline against a canceled license can follow you and affect any future application under the Vehicle Code.9California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 11824 Letting a license lapse does not erase your regulatory history.
Keeping Your License Valid Between Renewals
A few ongoing obligations trip people up more often than the renewal paperwork itself.
Report address changes within five days. Any time you move, notify the DMV in writing of your new residence address within five days. Failing to update can complicate future renewals and allows legal notices to go to your old address without your knowledge.10California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 11812
Your license must be posted at the dealership. When you start work for a dealer, you hand over your physical license so the dealer can display it, or a copy, in a location visible to the public at every site where you sell vehicles. When employment ends, the dealer must return the license and destroy any copies.10California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 11812
Changing dealers mid-cycle does not require a new license. The license stays with you. Update your employing dealer information through the DMV portal so the new dealer has what it needs for its records and posting requirements.
A Note for Active-Duty Servicemembers
California’s Department of Consumer Affairs waives renewal fees and other renewal requirements for active-duty members holding licenses issued by DCA boards and bureaus.11California Department of Consumer Affairs. California Renewal Waivers for Licensees on Active Duty in the United States Armed Forces The vehicle salesperson license is issued by the DMV, not a DCA board, so the DCA waiver may not automatically apply. If you are on active duty or approaching deployment, contact the DMV’s Occupational Licensing unit directly to confirm what accommodations are available.
