California No Parking Sign Requirements and Standards

A no parking sign in California is only enforceable if it meets the specifications set by the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) and is posted the way the Vehicle Code requires. California no parking sign requirements cover size, color, reflectivity, mounting height, placement intervals, and, on private property, specific content that must appear on the sign itself. Miss any of these, and the restriction may not hold up against a challenge.

Standard No Parking Sign Specifications

The standard California no parking sign is coded R7-26 in the CA MUTCD. It measures 12 inches by 18 inches, with red lettering and a red border on a white background. Both the legend and the background must be made of retroreflective material so the sign reads at night without external lighting.1Caltrans. CA MUTCD Sign R26 Specifications Larger sizes are allowed where traffic speeds or sight distances call for them.

Reflectivity is not a one-time test. The CA MUTCD requires that regulatory signs maintain their retroreflective performance over the life of the sign, and local agencies are responsible for inspecting and replacing signs that have faded or weathered. A sign that no longer meets the reflectivity standard can be grounds to dismiss a citation issued under it.2Caltrans. CA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices 2026

How High and Where Signs Must Be Mounted

Mounting height is fixed by the CA MUTCD. The bottom edge of a parking sign must sit at least 7 feet above the ground in urban areas and at least 5 feet in rural areas. The height keeps the sign above parked vehicles and pedestrians while still being readable from the driver’s seat.2Caltrans. CA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices 2026

Signs also have to be installed where they can actually be seen. Trees, buildings, and tall parked vehicles cannot block the line of sight. A restricted zone needs a sign at the beginning and another at the end, plus additional signs along the way so a driver who pulls in mid-block still sees the restriction. If a restriction only applies during certain hours or on certain days, those limits must appear on the face of the sign.

The Adequate Notice Rule

Signage is not just an aesthetic requirement. Under California Vehicle Code 22507, a local parking restriction does not take effect until signs or markings giving adequate notice have been posted.3California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22507 The ordinance alone does not create an enforceable violation. Without proper signage, the restriction is unenforceable, and citations issued under it can be thrown out.

For tow-away enforcement tied to street cleaning or special events, tow-away signs have to be posted at least 24 hours before any vehicle can be removed.4California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22651

Curb Paint Colors

Curb paint is the other half of California’s parking signage system. The five colors are set statewide by CVC 21458, and local governments must use this uniform color code when painting curbs:5California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 21458

  • Red: no stopping, standing, or parking at any time, with a narrow exception for buses in a marked bus loading zone.
  • Yellow: loading and unloading of passengers or freight only, for the time set by local ordinance.
  • White: passenger loading and unloading, or depositing mail in an adjacent mailbox.
  • Green: time-limited parking as specified by local ordinance, often 15 or 30 minutes.
  • Blue: reserved for vehicles displaying a disabled person or disabled veteran placard or plate.

Painted curbs can create a parking restriction on their own without a posted sign. Many cities use both. When a sign and curb paint are posted together, the sign governs the hours and durations.

Accessible Parking Sign Requirements

Accessible parking spaces carry stricter sign rules under California law, layered on top of federal ADA requirements. CVC 22511.8 requires that each accessible space have a sign posted immediately adjacent to and visible from the space, showing a profile view of a wheelchair with occupant in white on a blue background. For spaces built or signs replaced on or after July 1, 2008, the sign must also clearly state “Minimum Fine $250.”6California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22511.8

The space itself has to be outlined in blue with a white wheelchair symbol painted on the pavement. The loading and unloading zone next to it needs a blue border with contrasting hatched lines and the words “No Parking” in white letters at least 12 inches high.6California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22511.8

Federal ADA standards add that the bottom edge of every accessible parking sign must sit at least 60 inches above the ground, so the sign stays visible when a vehicle is parked in the space. Pavement markings alone do not satisfy the federal requirement for above-ground signage. Van-accessible spaces must include the words “van accessible” on the main sign or on a separate sign.7Access-Board.gov. Chapter 7: Signs

No Parking Signs on Private Property

Private property signs follow a different rulebook. If you want unauthorized vehicles towed from private property in California, your signage has to meet CVC 22658. A sign must be displayed in plain view at every entrance to the property, and it must meet all of the following:

  • Measure at least 17 inches by 22 inches.
  • Use lettering at least one inch tall.
  • State that public parking is prohibited and that vehicles will be removed at the owner’s expense.
  • Include the phone number of the local traffic law enforcement agency.
  • Include the name and phone number of each towing company authorized to tow from the property.

Missing any element can invalidate the tow. The most common failures are leaving off the towing company’s contact information and failing to post signs at every entrance. If even one entrance has no sign, a driver who entered through that entrance has grounds to challenge the tow.8California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22658

Before any tow from private property, the property owner or an authorized agent generally has to be present to verify the violation. A towing company cannot drive through a lot and remove cars on its own initiative. Limited exceptions exist for small residential rental properties where the tenant requests the tow.8California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 22658

When a Sign Fails the Standard

Signage defects are among the strongest grounds for getting a parking citation dismissed. If a no parking sign was missing, blocked by vegetation, faded past the point of readability, mounted too low, or otherwise out of compliance with the CA MUTCD, document it with photos right away. The same applies to curb paint that has worn down to where the color is ambiguous.

California gives you 21 days from receiving the citation (or 14 days from a delinquent notice) to request an initial review from the issuing agency at no charge, by phone, in writing, or in person. If the agency agrees the restriction wasn’t adequately posted, the citation is canceled.9California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40215 Agencies dismiss these cases regularly, because the Vehicle Code’s adequate-notice rule gives them no choice when the signage evidence is clear.

One boundary worth noting: several California parking prohibitions apply by operation of law and do not depend on any posted sign. Blocking a driveway, parking in a crosswalk, parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and parking within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of a crosswalk under the daylighting law can all draw a citation whether or not a sign is present.10California Legislative Information.
