To get a California SLPA license, you register with the state Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board (SLPAHADB) by completing an approved education pathway, logging 100 hours of supervised fieldwork, clearing a fingerprint-based background check, and submitting the application with a $50 fee. Complete packages are currently moving through initial review in about one to two weeks.1Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Applicants/Registrant
One point of vocabulary before anything else: California issues SLPAs a registration, not a license. People search for it as a license, and the two words get used interchangeably, but the credential itself is a registration under the SLPAHADB.
Education You Need
You must complete one of three educational routes:
- An associate degree from a Board-approved SLPA program.
- A bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an institution listed in the American Council on Education’s Accredited Institutions of Postsecondary Education handbook.
- An associate of arts or sciences degree in speech-language pathology assisting earned outside California.
Official transcripts must be sent directly from the school to the Board.2Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Qualifications for Registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant California does not require the national ASHA assistants certification exam for state registration.
Fieldwork Hours
Beyond the degree, you need supervised fieldwork. The standard route is a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork or clinical experience completed through one of the educational programs above. The alternative, built for people already working as SLPAs in another state, is 36 weeks of full-time work experience performing SLPA duties as defined in Business and Professions Code section 2538.1(b)(4).2Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Qualifications for Registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
All fieldwork must be overseen by a qualified Speech-Language Pathologist. Programs structure their 100 hours differently in terms of direct client contact versus administrative time, but the Board itself just requires the full 100 hours completed.
Your Application Package
The core submission to the Board includes:
- The SLPA application form.
- The Fieldwork Experience Verification Form, signed by your training program director or coordinator and your supervising SLP.
- Official transcripts, sent directly from your school.
- A passport-quality 2×2 photograph.
The Board has moved toward paperless applications, so check its website for the current submission method. Make sure every field is accurate and every document is attached; if the Board has to come back to you for missing items, the review timeline essentially restarts.1Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Fingerprints and Background Check
Every applicant must complete a fingerprint-based criminal history check through both the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI. How you do that depends on where you live.
If you live in California, use the Live Scan electronic fingerprinting service and find a location through the California Attorney General’s website. The processing fees are $32 for the state DOJ check and $17 for the federal FBI check, paid directly to the Live Scan operator.3Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Applicant Fingerprinting Requirements The operator may add a rolling fee on top of those amounts, so budget somewhat more than $49.
If you live outside California, submit fingerprints on FD-258 ink cards along with an additional $49 processing fee payable to the SLPAHADB. Out-of-state applicants therefore pay $99 total ($50 application plus $49 fingerprint processing), and both can go on a single check.4Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Fee and Processing Time
The application fee is $50, payable to the SLPAHADB.4Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Expedited Processing and Military Fee Waivers
The Board can expedite applications from active duty military personnel, honorably discharged veterans, military spouses or domestic partners with active duty orders in California (who also hold an equivalent registration in another state), refugees and asylees, special immigrant visa holders, and participants in the Department of Defense SkillBridge program.1Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. What You Can Do Once Registered
An SLPA registration does not authorize independent practice. You must work under the continuous supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist at all times, and California’s rules on this are detailed.
Your supervisor must hold a current, active, unrestricted California SLP license, or an unrestricted clinical or rehabilitative services credential in speech-language pathology from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, with at least two years of qualifying full-time experience.6Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations Title 16 1399.170.15 – Requirements for the Supervision of the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant For your first 90 days after initial registration, the supervisor must provide direct, on-site observation and guidance for at least 20% of your work schedule each week, and document it in your personnel file. The supervisor also has to file a signed Responsibility Statement with the Board within 30 business days of starting supervision.7Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Responsibility Statement for Supervisors of a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
Scope matters as much as supervision. As an SLPA you cannot conduct evaluations, interpret clinical data, or change treatment plans. You cannot sign treatment plans, reimbursement forms, or formal reports. You cannot discharge clients or make referrals. You cannot attend parent, case, or interdisciplinary conferences unless a licensed SLP is present. Certain high-acuity procedures (vocal tract prosthesis fitting, vocal tract imaging, and oropharyngeal swallow therapy with bolus material) are reserved for licensed SLPs. And you must always identify yourself as an assistant, not an SLP. Crossing those lines puts both your registration and your supervisor’s license at risk.8Legal Information Institute. Renewal Every Two Years
SLPA registrations renew every two years, with the deadline falling on the last day of your birth month.9LaborMarketInfo. Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Registration You must complete 12 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) during each two-year cycle. Your supervisor is responsible for helping you select appropriate coursework. Qualifying activities include state or regional conferences, workshops, formal in-service presentations, and independent study related to communication disorders. Board-approved providers are accepted but not required, and there is no cap on self-study hours.10Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Continuing Professional Development
Letting the registration lapse means you cannot legally practice, even under supervision. Finish your CPD hours and file the renewal before your birth month ends.
