California SNAP Benefits (CalFresh): Limits, Amounts, and Deductions

CalFresh eligibility and benefit amounts in California turn on two things: whether your household’s income falls under the program’s limits, and how large your household is. If your gross monthly income is below 200% of the federal poverty level and your net income (after allowable deductions) is below 100%, you qualify. Benefits range from up to $298 a month for one person to $994 for a family of four, with more for larger households.1Food and Nutrition Service. Income Limits

California uses two income screens. First, your household’s gross monthly income (everything coming in before taxes or deductions) must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. This is a broader cutoff than the federal baseline, and it’s the main reason more Californians qualify than would under default SNAP rules.3County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services. CalFresh Eligibility Criteria

Second, your net income after allowable deductions must be at or below 100% of the federal poverty level. The fiscal year 2026 net income limits are:4Santa Clara County Social Services Agency. CalFresh Program Monthly Allotment and Income Eligibility

  • 1 person: $1,305 per month
  • 2 people: $1,763
  • 3 people: $2,221
  • 4 people: $2,680
  • 5 people: $3,138
  • 6 people: $3,596
  • 7 people: $4,055
  • 8 people: $4,513

Each additional member adds $459 to the net income limit. One exception tightens things: households that include a member disqualified for an intentional program violation face a stricter 130% gross income test and are also subject to a resource test.3County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services. Who Counts as Your Household

California defines a household as everyone who lives together and purchases and prepares meals together.5California Department of Social Services. CalFresh Household Composition That definition matters because every income limit and benefit amount is keyed to household size. Roommates who buy and cook their own food separately can apply as separate one-person households even if they share a kitchen. Spouses and children under 22 who live with their parents are generally counted together regardless of how meals are handled.

Assets, Residency, and Immigration Status

For most California applicants, savings, vehicles, and other assets don’t count at all. The resource test only applies to households that include someone disqualified for program fraud, and the limits there are $3,000, or $4,500 if the household includes a member who is elderly or has a disability.6County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services. CalFresh Fact Sheet

You must live in California. U.S. citizens and certain non-citizens with qualifying immigration status can receive CalFresh. In mixed-status households, eligible members can still get benefits even if others don’t qualify; the county partially counts the ineligible members’ income when calculating the benefit.

How Much You’ll Receive

The maximum monthly allotment for fiscal year 2026 depends on household size:1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Maximum Allotments and Deductions

  • 1 person: $298
  • 2 people: $546
  • 3 people: $785
  • 4 people: $994
  • 5 people: $1,183
  • 6 people: $1,421
  • 7 people: $1,571
  • 8 people: $1,789

Each additional person beyond eight adds $218. The maximum assumes zero countable income after deductions. Most households receive less because benefits are reduced as net income rises. The calculation: take your net monthly income, multiply by 0.3, and subtract that from the maximum for your household size. The underlying assumption is that you’ll spend about 30% of your own income on food and CalFresh covers the rest.

Deductions That Raise Your Benefit

Deductions lower your net income, and lower net income means a higher monthly benefit. Missing one you’re entitled to costs you money every month of your certification period.

Standard Deduction

Every household gets this automatically. For fiscal year 2026: $209 for one to three people, $223 for four, $261 for five, and $299 for six or more.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Maximum Allotments and Deductions

Earned Income Deduction

If anyone in your household works, 20% of their gross earnings is automatically excluded from countable income.

Shelter and Utilities

When your housing costs (rent, mortgage, property taxes, or insurance) plus utilities exceed half your income after other deductions, the excess counts as a shelter deduction. California uses standardized utility allowances so you don’t need to document every bill. If you pay separately for heating or cooling, the Standard Utility Allowance is $663 per month. Households paying at least two non-heating utilities get the Limited Utility Allowance of $170. A phone-only household gets the Telephone Utility Allowance of $20.7California Department of Social Services. All County Information Notice I-46-25

Medical Expenses for Elderly or Disabled Members

If your household includes someone age 60 or older or a person with a qualifying disability, out-of-pocket medical costs over $35 per month are deductible. California offers a standard $150 medical expense deduction for eligible households whose unreimbursed costs clear that $35 floor. If verified actual expenses exceed $185 per month, you can deduct the full amount instead. Qualifying costs include insurance premiums, copays, prescriptions, dental care, equipment, and transportation to appointments.

Dependent Care

If you pay for child care or care of an incapacitated adult so a household member can work or attend training, those costs are deductible.

Work Requirements

Most recipients ages 16 to 59 who are able to work must register for work and accept a suitable job if one is offered. You’re exempt if you already work at least 30 hours per week, care for a young child or an incapacitated person, attend school or training at least half-time, participate in substance abuse treatment, or have a physical or mental limitation that prevents work.8Food and Nutrition Service. Time Limits Starting June 2026

Starting June 1, 2026, California is implementing stricter federal rules for adults ages 18 to 64 who have no disability and no dependent child under 14. If you fall into that group, you must work, volunteer, or participate in school or job training for an average of 20 hours per week, or earn at least $217.50 per week before taxes from a job. Fall short, and you’re limited to three months of CalFresh over any three-year period.9California Department of Social Services. CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements

The new rules also pull in groups that were previously exempt: adults ages 55 to 64, parents whose youngest child is 14 or older, people experiencing homelessness, veterans, and former foster youth. Seven counties (Alpine, Colusa, Imperial, Merced, Monterey, Plumas, and Tulare) have waivers suspending these time limits through October 31, 2026.9California Department of Social Services. CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements

College Students

If you’re enrolled in college at least half-time, meeting the income limits isn’t enough. You must also qualify under at least one student exemption. The most common are working an average of 20 hours per week, being eligible for federal or state work-study (even if you haven’t been awarded hours yet), caring for a child under 12, receiving CalWORKs, or participating in an approved employment and training program. Students who don’t fit any exemption are generally ineligible regardless of income.

How to Apply

You can apply online at BenefitsCal (benefitscal.org), mail a completed CF 285 application to your county social services office, or drop it off in person.10California Department of Social Services. Application for CalFresh Benefits BenefitsCal is the fastest route because you can upload documents and track your case online.

Gather these before you start:

  • Social Security numbers for each household member applying. Certain non-citizens who are victims of domestic violence or trafficking, or who are cooperating with criminal prosecution, may be exempt.10California Department of Social Services. Application for CalFresh Benefits
  • Proof of income. Pay stubs from the last 30 days or an employer statement for earned income. Self-employed applicants need income and expense records or tax returns. For unearned income, bring award letters from Social Security, unemployment, or disability programs.
  • Housing and utility costs. Rent receipts, mortgage statements, property tax bills, and utility information. These aren’t required to get approved, but without them the county can’t calculate your shelter deduction, and your benefit will be lower than it should be.

An eligibility worker will schedule an interview, usually by phone, though you can request an in-person meeting.11California Legislative Information. California Welfare and Institutions Code 18901.10 Standard processing is 30 days from the date the county receives your signed application.

Expedited Benefits

If your household is in immediate need, benefits must be available on your EBT card within seven calendar days when any of these apply:12eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2

  • Monthly gross income under $150 and liquid resources (cash, checking, savings) under $100.
  • Destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household with liquid resources under $100.
  • Combined monthly gross income and liquid resources less than your total monthly rent or mortgage plus utility costs.

Mention expedited service when you apply. The county should screen for it automatically, but flagging it helps avoid delays.

When Benefits Load

In every California county except Los Angeles, benefits deposit between the 1st and 10th of each month based on the last digit of your case number: case numbers ending in 1 load on the 1st, 2 on the 2nd, and so on, with 0 loading on the 10th.13EBT Project – CA.gov. Benefits Available Los Angeles County uses its own schedule. Your approval notice lists your specific date.

After approval, you’ll have ongoing reporting responsibilities, including a semi-annual SAR 7 report and a requirement to notify the county within 10 days if your gross income rises above 130% of the federal poverty level for your household size.14County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services. Semi-Annual Reporting Missing those deadlines is one of the most common ways people lose benefits they still qualify for.
