Can I Get a Copy of My Car Title Online in NJ?

You cannot complete a duplicate car title in NJ fully online. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) lets you download the application and book an appointment through its website, but the paperwork itself has to be submitted either in person at a Vehicle Center or by mail. The fee is $60 either way. In person is faster and is what the MVC recommends; a mailed application typically takes 8 to 12 weeks.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title

What You Can Do Online, and What You Can’t

Two parts of the process live on the MVC website. You can download the Universal Title Application (OS/SS-UTA), and you can schedule a Vehicle Center appointment through the online appointment wizard under the “Replacement Title/Registration” category, which lists “Apply for a duplicate title” as a service.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Only the owner listed on the title, a lienholder, or an authorized representative can apply.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title Requirements for No Proof of Ownership and Universal Title Application The MVC’s General Letter of Authorization (LOA-1) lets someone else handle the transaction for you, but that form does not give them authority to sign on your behalf; signing requires a separate power of attorney.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. You can request a duplicate if the original was lost, stolen, damaged, or never arrived. A separate procedure applies if you have no proof of ownership at all, with its own documentation requirements.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. What You Need Before You Apply

On the Universal Title Application, check “Duplicate Title” in Step 1 and complete the vehicle and owner sections.5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Universal Title Application Have these details ready:

  • Vehicle information: VIN, current NJ license plate number, year, make, model, body type, color, and weight.
  • Owner information: full name, address, phone number, and driver’s license number or MVC Business Entity ID.
  • Co-owner information, if any: name and driver’s license number.
  • Lienholder information, if any: name, address, phone number, and ID number.

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. The MVC uses a 6-point ID verification system for many transactions, so a NJ driver’s license or an equivalent primary document is the safest to have on hand.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Points of ID

Applying In Person at a Vehicle Center

Book your appointment through the MVC’s online wizard before going. Bring the completed Universal Title Application, your photo ID, the $60 fee, and any supporting documents such as a lien release. Applying by Mail

If you can’t visit a Vehicle Center, you can mail your application, but plan for 8 to 12 weeks.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Duplicate Title Your package should include:

Step 7 of the form asks how you want the duplicate returned. The options are U.S. Mail, FedEx, and UPS. If you pick a private carrier, you may need to supply a prepaid label or your own account number, and the shipping cost is yours.5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Universal Title Application

If There’s a Lien on the Vehicle

An active loan or lease adds a step. The MVC requires a statement from the current or past lienholder listing the owner’s name, the vehicle’s make, year, and VIN, along with a signed declaration that the original title is not in the lienholder’s possession.1New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. If the loan is paid off but the lien still shows on MVC records, you’ll need an original lien release letter from the lender with its company name, address, phone number, and the vehicle’s year, make, model, and VIN.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. If Your Title Was Stolen

A stolen title carries your full name, home address, and VIN, which is enough for someone to attempt insurance fraud or try to sell the vehicle. If you believe the title was stolen rather than misplaced, file a police report before you apply for the duplicate. The federal National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) shares title, brand, and theft data across states to help agencies catch cloned vehicles before a new title is issued.8Bureau of Justice Assistance.
