Can I Submit My DOT Physical Online in Florida?

You cannot submit your DOT physical online in Florida in the sense of taking the exam remotely: the physical itself must be performed in person by a certified medical examiner. What has changed, as of June 23, 2025, is how the results reach the state. Your examiner now transmits your exam electronically to FMCSA, which forwards it to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) automatically. You no longer upload or hand-deliver a paper certificate. The one piece you still handle yourself, self-certification of your driving category, can be done online through the FLHSMV.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Why the Exam Itself Can’t Be Done Online

A DOT physical requires hands-on evaluation that no video visit can replicate. The examiner personally checks vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart and lung function, reflexes, and range of motion, and records the findings on the Medical Examination Report Form (MCSA-5875). Federal regulations require the examiner to perform these assessments in person.2eCFR. 49 CFR 391.43 – Medical Examination; Certificate of Physical Examination Only a provider listed on FMCSA’s National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners may conduct the exam.3eCFR. 49 CFR Part 390 Subpart D – National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners

To find one near you, use the search tool at nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov. You can filter by city, ZIP code, or state. Picking an examiner who handles DOT physicals regularly tends to make the appointment, and any follow-up, go more smoothly.

How Your Results Now Reach the FLHSMV

Before June 2025, Florida CDL holders had to submit a copy of their paper Medical Examiner’s Certificate to the FLHSMV themselves, either through an online upload or at a driver license office. That requirement is gone. Under the current process, your examiner transmits the exam electronically to FMCSA’s National Registry, and FMCSA forwards the record to the FLHSMV.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Because the transfer is automated, the information you provide on the Medical Examination Report Form has to match your Florida license exactly. Name, date of birth, licensing state, and license number all have to line up. If any of those fields are wrong, the electronic transmission can fail and your certification will never post to your state record.4Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. National Registry II Fact Sheet A middle name entered where your license shows only a middle initial is enough to block the match.

The FLHSMV recommends carrying your paper Medical Examiner’s Certificate for at least 15 days after your exam, in case the update hasn’t yet posted to your driving record. After that window, you are not required to keep carrying one.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The Online Step: Self-Certification

Even with the electronic transmission handling the medical side, Florida still requires every CDL holder to self-certify the type of commercial driving they do. This is a separate step from the exam, and it is the part you can complete online through the FLHSMV. You must certify into one of four categories before the FLHSMV will issue or renew your CDL:1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information

  • Non-excepted interstate: You drive, or expect to drive, across state lines and must maintain a current federal medical certificate. This covers most long-haul drivers.
  • Excepted interstate: You drive across state lines but only in activities exempt from the federal medical certificate requirement, such as transporting school children or operating certain government vehicles.
  • Non-excepted intrastate: You drive only within Florida and must meet the state’s medical certification requirements.
  • Excepted intrastate: You drive only within Florida and perform activities exempt from the state’s medical certification requirements.

If your driving spans both excepted and non-excepted operations, you have to certify in the non-excepted category.5Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Drivers in an excepted category do not need a medical certificate but still have to self-certify.

Confirming the State Received Your Exam

Because you no longer touch the submission yourself, the single most important follow-up is checking that the record posted. You can verify your medical certification status through the FLHSMV’s online portal or by calling the CDL Helpdesk at 850-617-2606. If nothing shows up after that, assume a data mismatch first. Compare the name, date of birth, and license number on your Medical Examination Report Form against your Florida driver’s license. Even small discrepancies will stop the transfer. If you find one, contact your medical examiner so the record can be corrected and retransmitted. Don’t wait: once your previous certificate expires, you lose CDL privileges whether the delay was your fault or a data problem.

What Happens If the Certificate Lapses

Letting your medical certificate expire in Florida is more than a paperwork problem. The FLHSMV will disqualify you from operating a commercial vehicle, and your CDL must be surrendered for a non-commercial Class E license until you update your medical certification or change your self-certification to an excepted category.6FMCSA. Restoring your CDL requires a new medical certificate reaching the FLHSMV, and Florida may charge additional fees or require retesting before reinstating the credential.7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Schedule your next exam well before your current certificate’s expiration date so that any form corrections, follow-up testing, or transmission problems can be resolved while you are still certified.
