Can You Carry a Loaded Gun in Your Car in Arizona?

Yes. In Arizona, if you are at least 21 and legally allowed to own a firearm, you can carry a loaded gun in your car with no permit, no case, and no special storage. It can ride concealed on your body, in the glove box, in the center console, or on the passenger seat. The question of whether you can carry a loaded gun in your car in Arizona has a short answer for most adults and a longer one once you factor in age, where you’re driving, and where you’re parking.

If You Are 21 or Older

Arizona adopted permitless carry in 2010. For anyone 21 or older who is not a prohibited possessor, a loaded handgun can be carried anywhere in the vehicle, concealed or in plain view.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13 Section 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions The same rule covers long guns like rifles and shotguns.

Passengers get the same treatment. A passenger who is 21 or older and legally allowed to possess a firearm can have a loaded gun on their person or within reach while riding in your car.

If You Are 18 to 20

Younger adults can still transport a firearm, but how it’s stored matters. Carrying a concealed firearm on your body or within immediate control inside a vehicle is a class 3 misdemeanor for anyone 18 to 20. The statute leaves two legal options:2Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions

  • Any portion of the firearm or its holster is visible.
  • The firearm is in a case, holster, scabbard, pack, or luggage inside the vehicle. A storage compartment, map pocket, trunk, or glove compartment all count.

In practical terms, don’t tuck a loose handgun under a jacket on the seat. Put it in a case, drop it in the glove box, or mount a holster where it’s visible.

Who Cannot Have a Gun in the Car at All

None of this helps if you’re a prohibited possessor. Arizona bars several categories of people from possessing a firearm under any circumstances, including convicted felons whose rights have not been restored, people on felony or domestic violence probation, parole, or home arrest, people found by a court to be a danger to themselves or others or found guilty except insane, people currently serving a sentence, and most undocumented and nonimmigrant noncitizens.3Arizona Legislature. Places Your Gun Cannot Go, Even Inside Your Car

Permitless carry does not override location-based bans. Several of these catch law-abiding gun owners by surprise because the restriction reaches into the parking lot.

School Grounds

Possessing a firearm on school grounds is a class 1 misdemeanor. There is a vehicle exception, but all three conditions must be met: the gun is unloaded, it is not visible from outside the vehicle, and if you leave the car, it is locked.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13 Section 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions Miss any one of them and you have a criminal charge. Parents who carry daily and pull into a school pickup line without thinking are a common example.

Post Offices and Other Federal Buildings

Federal law bans firearms in any building owned or leased by the federal government where federal employees regularly work, including courthouses, Social Security offices, VA facilities, and IRS offices. Simple possession can bring up to a year in prison, and up to five years if the gun was intended for use in a crime.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 930 – Possession of Firearms and Dangerous Weapons in Federal Facilities

Post offices are the trap. Federal regulation prohibits carrying or storing a firearm anywhere on postal property, parking lot included.6United States Postal Service. Possession of Firearms and Other Dangerous Weapons on Postal Service Property Leaving a handgun locked in your trunk while you run inside to mail a package is a federal offense.

Nuclear and Hydroelectric Generating Stations

Bringing a firearm into a nuclear or hydroelectric generating station is a class 4 felony. Arizona hosts the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the largest in the country, so this is not a theoretical rule.2Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions

Bars and Restaurants With Liquor Licenses

You can carry a concealed handgun into a bar or restaurant that serves alcohol unless the establishment has posted a state-prescribed sign (a pictogram of a firearm inside a red circle with a diagonal line) next to the liquor license.7Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 4-229 – Licenses; Handguns; Posting of Notice Sign or no sign, you cannot drink any alcohol while carrying on licensed premises. That rule is absolute.8Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. Firearms FAQ

Polling Places on Election Day

Carrying into a polling place on election day is a class 1 misdemeanor. The restriction only applies on the actual day of an election.2Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions

Tribal Land

Arizona has more tribal land than almost any other state, and major highways run across reservations. Arizona’s permitless carry law does not apply there. Reservations are sovereign territory with their own firearms rules, and those rules vary from tribe to tribe. Some prohibit firearms outright. Check the specific tribe’s ordinances before driving across a reservation with a gun in the car.

When Someone Asks You to Hand It Over

If the operator of a public establishment or the sponsor of a public event makes a reasonable request to take your weapon for temporary, secure storage during your visit, refusing is a class 1 misdemeanor.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13 Section 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions This is a direct request from someone in authority, not a sign on the door.

If You Get Pulled Over

Arizona does not require you to volunteer that there is a firearm in the car. You must answer honestly only if an officer specifically asks. Failing to accurately answer that question is a class 1 misdemeanor.1Arizona Legislature. Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13 Section 13-3102 – Misconduct Involving Weapons; Defenses; Classification; Definitions

Volunteering the information is usually the smarter play even though it isn’t required. Keep your hands on the wheel, tell the officer where the gun is before you reach anywhere near it, and follow instructions. An officer can take temporary custody of the firearm for the duration of the stop and must return it when the encounter ends, assuming you are not arrested.9City of Phoenix. Your Firearm in Your Car at Work

Arizona law prevents employers, property owners, and business entities from banning firearms stored in employees’ locked, privately owned vehicles, as long as the gun is not visible from outside.10Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 12-781 – Transportation or Storage of Firearms; Motor Vehicles A company policy to the contrary is void under state law, and your employer cannot fire you, discipline you, or search your personal vehicle for a firearm.

The protection has limits. It does not apply when you are driving a company-owned or company-leased vehicle, when the employer provides secured parking with restricted access and offers monitored firearm storage available at arrival and departure, at nuclear generating stations with secured parking and gun storage, at certain Department of Defense contractors on or next to military bases, or in the parking area of a single-family home.10Arizona Legislature. Driving Across State Lines

Arizona’s permitless carry law stops at the state line. An Arizona concealed weapons permit gives you reciprocity with dozens of other states that recognize it, so you can carry under their rules. Without the permit, you depend on each state’s own law, and many states do not have permitless carry.11Arizona Department of Public Safety. Concealed Weapons and Permits To qualify for an Arizona permit you must be at least 21, a U.S. citizen or Arizona resident, not a prohibited possessor, and able to demonstrate firearm competence through training or equivalent experience. Active-duty military and honorably discharged veterans can apply at 19.12Arizona Legislature. Arizona Code 13-3112 – Concealed Weapons; Qualification; Application; Permit

For passing through a restrictive state, federal law provides a safe-passage rule. You must be traveling from a place where you can legally possess the firearm to another place where you can legally possess it. During transit the firearm must be unloaded and stored where it is not accessible from the passenger compartment. In a vehicle without a separate trunk, the gun must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or center console.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 US Code 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms

The protection covers the drive-through, not the destination. Check into a California hotel for a week with a handgun locked in your trunk and you are no longer transporting; you are possessing, and that state’s law applies.
