Can You Collect California SDI If You Move Out of State?

Yes, you can keep collecting California SDI after moving out of state, and you can file a new claim from another state too. State Disability Insurance is tied to the wages you earned from a California employer, not to where you live when you file or receive payments. The Employment Development Department (EDD) imposes no residency requirement. What changes when you leave California is the logistics: medical certification, mail, and proving you were still attached to the workforce when your disability began.

Why Your Address Doesn’t Decide Eligibility

SDI eligibility turns on one question: did you pay enough into the fund through payroll deductions during your base period? Those deductions appear as “CASDI” on your pay stubs. The base period is a 12-month span covering wages paid roughly 5 to 18 months before your claim start date, and you need at least $300 in wages subject to SDI withholding during that period.1Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefit Payment Amounts No California statute requires you to be physically present in the state to collect.

Benefits range from $50 to $1,765 per week and can last up to 52 weeks on a single claim, with the exact amount tied to your highest-earning quarter in the base period.2Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Benefits California wages you already earned travel with you.

Two Situations, Two Different Risk Levels

You’re Already on an SDI Claim When You Move

If benefits have already started and then you relocate, payments continue as long as you keep meeting the program’s requirements. You’ll need to keep submitting medical certifications and update your address with the EDD so correspondence and your payment card follow you. Leaving California does not interrupt an active claim.

You Move First, Then Become Disabled

This is where most denials occur. You can still file a new claim based on your California earnings, but the EDD will look at whether you were employed or actively looking for work when the disability began. If you moved out of state and stopped job searching before your disability started, the EDD may decide you voluntarily left the labor market, which can disqualify you. The question an analyst is really asking is whether you were still attached to the workforce when the disability hit.

One boundary worth knowing: a handful of other states run their own mandatory disability programs (New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico). If you take a job in one of those places, future disabilities will fall under that state’s program rather than California’s. Most states have no state-level disability program at all, which is why preserving your California SDI eligibility matters.

Deadlines You Can’t Miss From Another State

File your claim no earlier than nine days after your disability begins and no later than 49 days after it begins.3Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance Claim Process Your doctor’s medical certification has to arrive within that same 49-day window. When you’re working with an unfamiliar out-of-state provider, start the paperwork the week your disability begins; mail delays and billing-office confusion eat through those seven weeks faster than you’d expect.

Every new claim also carries an unpaid seven-day waiting period. The first day you can receive benefits is the eighth day of your claim.4Employment Development Department. Disability Insurance – Benefits and Payments FAQs If you file a second claim for the same or related condition within 60 days of your original benefit period ending, you don’t serve the waiting period again.5California Legislative Information. Filing late? Include a written explanation with your claim so an analyst can review the circumstances. Late filings without a good reason are routinely denied.

Getting a Doctor Outside California to Certify

Every SDI claim needs a licensed health professional to certify your disability. The EDD doesn’t require the provider to be in California. Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in your current state can all complete the certification.6Employment Development Department. Certify or Extend Claims – Basics for Physicians/Practitioners

There’s a wrinkle with electronic submission. To certify through SDI Online, a practitioner needs a California Department of Consumer Affairs license, which out-of-state providers don’t carry. The EDD directs out-of-state providers to call 1-855-342-3645 before trying to register.6Employment Development Department. Certify or Extend Claims – Basics for Physicians/Practitioners In practice, most out-of-state doctors complete Part B of the paper DE 2501 form and mail it in. That works, but it adds a few days to processing.

Hand your doctor the DE 2501 ahead of the appointment. Part B asks for a diagnosis and the provider’s professional opinion that your condition prevents you from working.7Employment Development Department. Filing and Keeping Your Address Current

You file by completing Part A of the DE 2501, either through SDI Online or by mail.8Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim by Mail SDI Online is faster, lets you upload documents directly, and is the better choice when you’re managing everything remotely. Log in to your myEDD account, open SDI Online, and follow the prompts for a new Disability Insurance claim.9Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim in SDI Online

For paper filing, order a DE 2501 online, call 1-800-480-3287 (option 3), or ask your doctor or former employer for one.8Employment Development Department. How to File a Disability Insurance Claim by Mail Mail it to the EDD office listed on the form.

Update your address with the EDD the moment you move. You can do this through the SDI Online portal under your profile settings. The EDD mails determination letters, notices, and your payment card to the address on file, and a missed notice can mean a missed deadline.

Getting Paid Without a California Address

The card works anywhere Visa is accepted and lets you move funds to a personal bank account at no cost, with transfers taking two to three business days.11Employment Development Department. If you’d rather skip the card, enroll in direct deposit: log in to myEDD, open SDI Online, go to your profile, and change your Benefit Payment Option to Direct Deposit.12Employment Development Department. Direct Deposit For out-of-state claimants, this is usually the cleanest option. It takes any mid-move address confusion out of the equation.

Taxes in Your New State

California SDI payments are generally not taxable at the federal or state level. The exception is when SDI substitutes for unemployment insurance benefits you were already receiving when you became disabled; those payments are taxable federally but still exempt from California state income tax. You’ll receive a Form 1099-G only if some or all of your benefits are taxable.13State of California – Taxes. Special Circumstances

Your new state may have its own rules on out-of-state disability benefits. Most follow the federal treatment, but check with your state’s tax agency or a tax professional if you’re not sure.

If Your Claim Is Denied

Out-of-state claims see a higher denial rate, usually because the claimant wasn’t actively looking for work when the disability started or because the medical certification was incomplete. If the EDD finds you ineligible, you have 30 days from the date on your Notice of Determination to appeal.14Employment Development Department. State Disability Insurance Appeals

You can submit the appeal electronically or by mail to the return address on your notice. It has to be in writing and must include your name, address, Social Security number, the date of the determination, and your reasons for disagreeing.15California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Filing an Appeal If you’re appealing late, explain why. Appeals that can’t be resolved internally go to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, where an administrative law judge holds a hearing. Those hearings can be done by phone, which keeps the process workable from anywhere in the country.
