In Florida, you can collect unemployment and Social Security at the same time, and neither benefit will reduce the other. Florida’s Reemployment Assistance program ignores your Social Security income when calculating your weekly check, and the Social Security Administration does not count unemployment payments as earnings against your retirement benefit. You keep both in full.
Neither Benefit Reduces the Other
Florida law is explicit. For any week you receive Social Security benefits that you paid into through payroll contributions, your Reemployment Assistance payment cannot be reduced because of those contributions.1Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 443.101 – Disqualification for Benefits This covers both Social Security retirement and Social Security Disability Insurance. Several other states still deduct part or all of a retiree’s Social Security from the unemployment check, so this is not something to assume applies everywhere.
The rule runs in the other direction too. If you are collecting Social Security retirement before full retirement age, the SSA applies an annual earnings test — in 2026, you can earn up to $24,480 before Social Security starts withholding $1 for every $2 above that limit.2Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Unemployment compensation does not count toward that limit. The SSA only counts wages from a job or net self-employment income, not government benefit payments.3Social Security Administration. Will Unemployment Benefits Affect My Social Security Benefits? So collecting Reemployment Assistance will not push you past the earnings threshold or shrink your Social Security check.
Put concretely: if your work history qualifies you for $250 a week in Reemployment Assistance and you also receive $1,800 a month from Social Security retirement, you keep both amounts in full.
How Florida Calculates Your Weekly Unemployment Amount
Your Social Security income plays no role in the math. Florida looks only at wages earned during the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. For claims filed in 2026, that base period runs from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025.4FloridaJobs.org. Claimant FAQ You need wages in at least two of those quarters and at least $3,400 in total base period wages to qualify.
The weekly payment equals your highest-earning quarter divided by 26, rounded down to the nearest dollar. Payments range from a minimum of $32 to a maximum of $275 per week.5Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 443.111 – Payment of Benefits The $275 cap is one of the lowest in the country and has not moved in years.
How long payments last depends on the statewide unemployment rate. At or below 5 percent, you get 12 weeks. One extra week is added for each half-point above 5 percent, up to a ceiling of 23 weeks when unemployment hits 10.5 percent.5Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 443.111 – Payment of Benefits Florida’s rate has sat well below 5 percent recently, so plan on 12 weeks. At the maximum, that works out to $3,300 total — a bridge, not a replacement income, which is why pairing it with Social Security matters for older workers.
The Catch for SSDI Recipients
Collecting both is more complicated if your Social Security benefit is SSDI rather than retirement. Every Reemployment Assistance claimant must certify that they are able to work, available for work, and actively searching, and Florida requires at least five employer contacts per week.6Florida Senate. Florida Statutes Title XXXI Chapter 443 Section 443.091 – Benefit Eligibility Conditions To receive SSDI, meanwhile, the Social Security Administration must have found you unable to perform substantial gainful activity because of a medical condition.7Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity In 2026, substantial gainful activity means earning $1,690 or more per month.8Social Security Administration. What’s New in 2026?
These positions can coexist, but only on a narrow path: you have to show that you can work within specific medical restrictions while staying below the SGA earnings threshold. Claiming both without careful documentation invites scrutiny from both agencies.
Reporting Social Security on Reconnect
Even though Social Security does not reduce your payment, you still have to disclose it. Florida’s online system, Reconnect, is where you apply, request biweekly payments, and report income.9FloridaJobs.org. Reconnect Logins Every two weeks you confirm your work search, report any earnings, and certify continued eligibility.10Department of Commerce. Request Benefit Payment
Report your Social Security when prompted. Leaving it out will not boost your payment, since the state already ignores it for benefit math, but failing to disclose it can be flagged as misrepresentation. Overpayments caused by false statements or failure to disclose material facts carry a penalty of 15 percent on top of what you have to pay back.11Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 443.151 – Procedure Concerning Claims
Taxes When You Stack Both Benefits
Florida has no state income tax, so neither benefit creates a state tax bill. Federal taxes are a different matter. Unemployment compensation is fully taxable as ordinary income.12Internal Revenue Service. Unemployment Compensation Social Security becomes partially taxable once your combined income — your adjusted gross income plus nontaxable interest plus half of your Social Security benefits — crosses $25,000 for a single filer or $32,000 for a married couple filing jointly. At higher income levels, up to 85 percent of your Social Security can be subject to federal tax.13Internal Revenue Service. Social Security Income Adding unemployment on top of Social Security can push you past those thresholds even when the unemployment amount is modest.
Neither program withholds federal tax automatically. For unemployment, you can file IRS Form W-4V to have 10 percent withheld from each payment; no other percentage is available.14Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4V (Rev. January 2026) Voluntary Withholding Request For Social Security, you request withholding through the SSA. Skip both and you should set money aside for estimated taxes. At year-end you will receive a Form 1099-G showing your total unemployment compensation in Box 1 and any federal tax withheld in Box 4.15Internal Revenue Service. The Medicare Premium Ripple
Combined benefits can also push up your Medicare costs two years down the line. Medicare Part B premiums include an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount that kicks in when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $109,000 for a single filer or $218,000 for a married couple filing jointly. The standard Part B premium in 2026 is $202.90 per month, and the surcharges can more than triple that.16Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. 2026 Medicare Parts A & B Premiums and Deductibles IRMAA uses your tax return from two years prior, so unemployment income received in 2026 could affect your 2028 premium. Most people collecting both will not have combined income high enough to trigger a surcharge, but a pension, investment income, or a working spouse can change that. If job loss drops your income, you can ask the SSA to reconsider the IRMAA calculation based on that life-changing event.17Social Security Administration. If Your Unemployment Claim Is Denied
A denial does not have to be the end of it. You have 20 calendar days from the determination date to appeal, with the deadline rolling to the next business day if it falls on a weekend or legal holiday. There is no fee.18FloridaJobs.org. File an Appeal You can file through Reconnect, by fax, or by mail, and you will receive a Notice of Hearing with a date for a telephone hearing before an appeals referee. The 20-day window is strict, so mark it the moment a denial notice arrives.
